In the book "
In The Beginning" Tracing The Gospel Story In Genesis, Chapter 1, Bishop Emeritus Dr. Robert M. Solomon explains that Genesis 1:1 — "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" — is the foundation for everything else in the Bible.
Based on his teachings, here is how we can live a God-centred life and what habits we might need to check:

How to live a God-Centred life
  • Recognise God as the Boss (Sovereign Creator): Since God created everything, He is the "Divine Architect". Living for Him means acknowledging that our life belongs to Him, and we are here for His purposes, not just our own.
  • Put God First in Everything: The Bible starts with "In the beginning God," not with humans or our problems. To be God-centred, we must give Him the first and central place in our thoughts, decisions, and daily schedule.
  • Carry Out Our Role as His Representative: Humans are made in God's image to reflect His character and manage His world. This means we should aim to show His love, holiness, and goodness in whatever we do.
  • Trust His Plan for Salvation: Solomon highlights that Genesis 1 is the start of the "Gospel story". A God-centred life involves trusting that He has a plan to save and redeem us through Jesus Christ, even when life is messy.

Directions and Habits to Examine and Correct
  • Stop Trying to Be Our Own Boss: We often choose "autonomy" (doing things our own way), which leads to hiding from God and breaking relationships. Check if we are making big life decisions without praying or asking for God's guidance.
  • Watch Out for "Self-Centred" Living: If our main focus is only on our own success, comfort, or feelings, we are not giving God the "central place". Examine if our daily habits — like how we spend our money or free time — revolve mostly around ourself.
  • Examine Our Motivation for Work: Don't just see work as "hired drudgery" (performed employment that is repetitive, boring, unpleasant, or menial, for wages under the direction of others) or a way to get rich. Ask ourself: Are we working to glorify God and serve others, or just for ourself?
  • Correct Any "Small" View of God: Sometimes we forget how powerful God is. Solomon emphasizes God’s "glorious power and majesty" in creation. If we are always worrying or have no peace, we might need to correct our habit of looking at our problems more than looking at God’s power.

God as the Divine Architect and Creator
According to Bishop Robert M. Solomon in "In The Beginning", living a God-centred life requires acknowledging God as the Creator, focusing on Him over self, and trusting His sovereign rule. A God-centered life requires acknowledging God as the Sovereign Creator, reflecting His image, stewarding creation, and anchoring life in His Word.

Reflecting His character through intentional living
To correct one’s direction, individuals must shift from selfish, self-reliant habits to being stewards of God's creation, focusing on daily Bible engagement rather than mere task completion.

Key areas to examine include moving from self-centeredness to God-centeredness, implementing
biblical rest (Sabbath), and organizing life to reflect divine order.

To live this way, we must prioritize God's sovereignty over our personal, self-focused desires. Key habits to examine include ensuring spiritual disciplines are not merely routine, and properly stewarding God’s creation rather than focusing on self-centered goals.

Key adjustments involve shifting from a "
me-first" attitude to responsible stewardship, eliminating "sinful sabotage" of God’s order, and disciplining one’s schedule to prioritize spiritual rest.
