US actress Tessa Thompson was a fan of English director-actor Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor before she signed on to play elite Asgardian warrior Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok.

"I knew plenty in the sense that I watched a number of the movies," said the 34-year-old.

"It feels like a dangerous thing to admit now that I am part of the universe, but I was not an avid reader of comic books growing up.

"My first introduction to Thor was the films. I am a big Kenneth Branagh fan, and it really interested me to see a director like him take on a comic book movie.

"So the Thor movie was really the first in the universe that made a huge impression on me."

In the movie, Valkyrie leaves her home behind because of her past but reluctantly becomes part of Thor and Hulk's team to try to save Asgard.

Working with returning stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston and Mark Ruffalo was easy for the Marvel Cinematic Universe first-timer.

"They are really easy people to be a newbie around because they are so welcoming," Thompson said.

"They are all so excited to have such a dynamic female character enter the universe.

"With Thor: Ragnarok, the characters have all undergone changes. We are introduced to a Bruce Banner that we have never really seen before. And we are seeing a Thor that we have not really seen before.

In Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok, Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok – the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization – at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela.

"It was really interesting to work with such gifted actors who have been mining these characters for so long but also are always reaching to break new ground.

"There was a shift in tone and that kept us all on our toes. In that way, it felt like we had moments where we were all newbies again; where we were all discovering who these people are together and what the world of the film is."

For Thompson, working on Thor: Ragnarok presented physical challenges she readily embraced to bring the character to life.

"This may have been the most physical I have ever been in my adult life," she said.

POWERFUL
Expanding on Valkyrie's style of fighting, Thompson said: "We wanted to find a style that we have not seen before.

"It was important that you believe she can wield a sword as powerful and iconic as Dragonfang, and that she also looks like she could win any bar fight.

"We wanted Valkyrie to feel really close to the ground and scrappy. I would say she fights like a boy, except that diminishes the fact that she just fights like a really strong woman."

Thompson summed up her experience by saying: "At the risk of sounding silly, to be in this world of superheroes and to be working really hard in stunts and fights gives me a sense that we are always capable of more than we think we are as people. That is always nice to be reminded of.

"The less earnest answer is that it has been highly amusing. I cannot believe this is my job. I cannot believe that I get to run around in a cape and have a spaceship, and punch bad guys."

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) is introducing a new design for the Singapore biometric passport which comes with additional security features.

This will make the passport harder to forge or tamper with, ICA said yesterday.

There are two new security features - the image of the passport holder inside a window that can be viewed as a positive or negative portrait when tilted and viewed in transmitted light; and a surface transformation design in the shape of the national flower, which displays reflective and animation effects at different angles.

Additional security features include the multiple laser image in the shape of the Singapore map and an embossed tactile design.

The passport's pages will sport new designs featuring six landmarks - the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Esplanade, Marina Barrage, Gardens by the Bay, Singapore Sports Hub and Punggol New Town.

ICA said those whose passport applications were received from Oct 21 will be issued with the new passports, which will be available for collection from Monday.

Those collecting their passports between Monday and Nov 15 will need to visit the ICA Building in Kallang.

Passports can also be collected at selected post offices from Nov 16.

Singaporeans with existing valid passports do not need to replace their current ones.

Details on the new design can be found on the ICA website.

There is no change to the passport application fee, which remains at $80.

Those who apply for the passport online, by post or through a deposit box will enjoy a rebate of $10.

This week, a passport index ranked the Singapore passport as the "most powerful" in the world, ahead of countries such as Germany, Sweden and South Korea.

To keep our public infrastructure projects going, Singapore will need 1,000 more engineers every year for the next few years.

But interest in the profession has been sliding - something that, if not addressed, will be detrimental to Singapore, said Mr Liew Mun Leong, the chairman of Changi Airport Group and Surbana Jurong.

"We have first-class apartments, bridges, roads, airport, harbour and MRT.

"If we don't have enough engineers, or only have second-grade engineers, who is going to do all those things?" the 71-year-old lamented.

He was speaking to TNP before receiving the IES (Institution of Engineers, Singapore) Lifetime Engineering Achievement Award 2017 on Tuesday night.

"Maybe, in a way, awards like this are interesting because they (bring to) surface people like me who do what I do," he said.

Forty-seven years ago, humans first set foot on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission. That success would not have been possible if not for the team of 400,000 people who worked to ensure the success of the mission and the safety of astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. One of those 400,000 people was Margaret Hamilton. On November 22, 2016, President Barack Obama awarded Hamilton the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contribution that led to Apollo 11's successful landing.

"The students read only about bankers who make millions of dollars, or the people who have glamorous jobs.

"But engineers are invisible. I call them the unsung heroes in society. How do you make them sing louder about the profession?" he wondered.

One way could be to arrange for students to visit construction projects to "put life into subjects".

Mr Liew said: "If you want to convince people to go into shipbuilding, then take them to a shipyard to see what is happening there... To build it is really another story you could interest the students in before they choose a course."

The veteran engineer's own path was inspired by his late father, a lathe turner in a shipyard who had looked up to his British engineering boss.

Mr Liew became one of the pioneer engineers behind Changi Airport's first runway in 1975.

He was involved in the construction of Terminal 1 and later headed the construction of Terminal 2.

Little wonder, then, that those years made up some of the more memorable moments in the earlier part of his career.

Said Mr Liew: "With some modesty, we are the most awarded airport in the world.

"I am proud that my initial time as an engineer was spent on this project. So obviously when you have done something like this, which is world class, it will be memorable."

Even as he moved on to the corporate world, Mr Liew never veered too much from his field.

CAPITALAND
For a few years, he managed a specialist engineering company, before moving on to found and lead real estate giant CapitaLand. His technical expertise as an engineer meant he knew how long it would take to build a mall, for instance, and how much it would cost.

"And you probably understand quality better than a non-technical person," he added.

Being analytical, logical, numeric and pragmatic - an engineer's attributes - became second nature in his management style too.

"More importantly, engineers do things with paranoia in mind. That enriches my analytical skills and thinking philosophy.

"People ask me, 'Why are you so paranoid?' I tell them it is because things can fail," he told TNP.

This "paranoia" extends to his personal life.

For the past 30 years, Mr Liew has made it a point to arrive at the airport two hours before his flight. He also accounts for a traffic jam in his travel time, most recently using Google Maps.

He said: "I do all these things to make sure I am never late. As an engineer, you think through the whole working process."

After a slight detour, Mr Liew is now back at Changi Airport as its chairman, working on Singapore's largest development project.

"Have you seen the Terminal 4? It is beautiful," he said of the airport's latest addition, which will open on Tuesday.

"From the time you take your tickets for your seats, to the baggage, to security, then entering the plane - all these are seamlessly done through technology. That is one of the biggest breakthroughs in airports in this part of the world," Mr Liew said proudly.

So far, the man with many hats has not entertained any thoughts of retiring.

"Why should it be that when you reach 60 or 65, you drop down the cliff of emptiness and do nothing? I don't subscribe to that idea.

"Society has invested so much in you, your education, career, and everything," he said.

"If you stop thinking, you will get dementia. Your brain needs to think. If your brain stops, you are finished."
