PHOTO: It took Noah 120 Years to build the ark. What do you think enabled Noah to persevere? What lessons can you learn here about the patience it takes to obey the Lord?
Based on Bishop Dr Robert M. Solomon’s book "In The Beginning", Tracing The Gospel Story In Genesis, here is a breakdown of what enabled Noah to stay the course for 120 years, along with the everyday lessons we can take away.
What Enabled Noah to Persevere?
- Deep Intimacy and Walking with God: Noah didn't just know about God; he "walked faithfully with God." Because he had a close, personal relationship with the Lord, he could hear His voice clearly and trust His character, even when the rest of the world was totally corrupt.
- Fear of God Over Fear of Man: People around Noah must have laughed at him every day for building a giant boat on dry land where there was no water. Noah chose to revere God’s word more than the mockery and peer pressure from his neighbours.
- A Solid, Functional Faith: His faith wasn't just head knowledge or "talk only." It was an active, working faith. Hebrews 11:7 highlights that in holy fear, he built the ark. Every single log he cut and every layer of tar he wiped was an act of worship and obedience.
- Clear Focus on His Family's Salvation: Noah knew that the ark was the only way to save his household from the coming judgment. The heavy responsibility of protecting his wife, sons, and daughters-in-law kept him motivated to push through the exhaustion.
Lessons We Can Learn About the Patience It Takes to Obey the Lord
- God’s Timeline is Always Slower Than Ours: We like things fast, "instant noodle" style. But 120 years is a few lifetimes! True obedience means we must learn to trust God’s timing, even when His promises take decades or a lifetime to pass.
- Obedience Must Be Complete, Not Half-Hearted: Genesis notes that Noah did all that the Lord commanded him. He didn't cut corners or modify the dimensions of the ark to save time. Patience means doing the work properly and following God’s instructions right down to the last detail.
- Keep Witnessing Even When There is No Result: For over a century, Noah was a "preacher of righteousness," but nobody listened except his own family. Patience means we keep doing what is right and sharing God's truth, even when we don't see immediate success or converts.
- True Faith Sustains You for the Long Haul: Obedience is not a short sprint; it is a long marathon. Noah shows us that patience is built on day-to-day grit, holding onto God's covenant promises when the horizon looks completely empty and dry.

PHOTO: "Dear Lord, Thank You for the example of Noah, who walked faithfully with You for 120 years. When the world around him was full of corruption and distractions, he chose to focus on Your voice.
Lord, we know that Noah could only persevere because he had a deep, personal relationship with You. His faith wasn't just "talk only"—it was a practical, everyday faith. Give us that same close relationship with You. Help us to revere Your Word more than the opinions, mockery, or peer pressure of the people around us. When we feel exhausted or lonely in our walk, remind us of our responsibility to lead our families and loved ones closer to Your salvation.
Teach us the lessons of patience that Noah showed. Forgive us for when we want everything "instant noodle" style. Your timeline is often much slower than ours, but Your timing is always perfect. Give us the patience to obey You completely, right down to the last detail, without cutting corners. Help us to keep doing what is right and sharing Your truth, even when we don't see immediate results or success.
Remind us that obeying You is a long marathon, not a short sprint. Guard our hearts with Your peace and give us the daily grit to trust Your promises, even when the horizon looks completely dry.
Through Lord Jesus Christ we pray. Amen."
