Carly Oboudiyat, a 25-year-old student from New York, left mountains of snow to enjoy the carnival. ‘It’s fantastic going from freezing winds to 111-degree weather,’ she said.

This year’s carnival has been overshadowed by a row over whether to allow seven-year-old Julia Lira to lead a samba troupe. A judge ruled last week that she could take part.

For the past 10 years the Brazilian Carnival has drawn amazing performers and engaged crowds. This year was no exception. Katia Moraes and Andrea Ferraz backed by their amazing band wowed attendees with their incredible voices and boundless energy. The audience fueled by the performers’ enthusiasm sang and danced during both sets. The crowd almost became its own performance as it swayed, writhed, and sang as one.

The acrobatic skill displayed by the Capoeria practitioners stunned the audience with their astounding moves. They leapt, rolled, spun, twisted, and flipped in ways so fluid the crowd was left in awe. They maintained their intensity throughout their act. There must be something in the genes of Brazilian performers that prevents them from getting tired.

It wouldn’t be a Brazilian Carnival without Samba dancers. Choreographed by Joany Macias, these seductive, feathered and sequined dancers were truly a delight to watch. Their alluring and graceful body movements tantalized the crowd. Like the rest of the performers, their energy never waned. While not on stage, they were in the crowd ensuring the everyone was enjoying themselves.

There wasn’t a dull moment that night at the Nokia. Every performer gave it their all and put on an amazing show. The crowd gave it their all as well which created an electrifying atmosphere. It’s too late to catch the Brazilian Carnival this year, so unless you’re planning a trip to Brazil, it’s more than worth the ticket price. This is definitely a not to miss event.
