Scott Peck, author of The Road Less Travelled, came across people whom he could not fit into the standard diagnostic categories used in psychiatric practice. For example, he met a couple whose son accidentally shot himself and was killed. As a Christmas present that year, they gave his younger brother a toy gun. Peck was shocked and puzzled by their extreme callousness (insensitive, cruel, or disregardful of others' feelings and suffering). He decided that the only valid diagnosis was that there was something evil operating in the parents. He wrote People of The Lie to show that supernatural evil existed in individuals, families, and group.¹¹

The question regarding how suffering and evil came into human situation is a profound one, and it has been explored endlessly throughout the history of human thought. Some think that the existence of suffering and evil excludes any belief in a Creator God who could have created such a faulty universe. Even if He had, He would certainly do something about it to fix the bugs, so to speak. Some think that pain and suffering are no more than perceptions in the mind and can be dealt with by simply rising above them in our thoughts. And some attribute their existence to
malevolent (having a desire to cause harm, injury, or destruction to others) evil beings who should be controlled or placated (stop someone from feeling angry).

The biblical answer is found in Genesis 3:1-13, an important foundational chapter. The creation accounts in Genesis 1 and 2 leave us in a
pristine (unspoiled, untouched, and immaculately clean or new) scene where everything God had made was "very good" (Genesis 1:31). There was enough food and water, and the first couple were happily married with a transparent relationship: there was no shame, guilt, or tension between them. We could almost add the typical fairy tale ending, "And they lived happily thereafter."

But this was not to be so, as a crafty serpent entered the story and the garden. The ancient serpent is identified in Scripture as
Satan (Revelation 12:9; 20:2). Originally a beautiful angel created by God, Satan's character rotted within as he proudly rebelled against God. He influenced other angels to do likewise and thus led a demonic realm that has been working against God. These beings were cast out of heaven and have been creating havoc on earth (Revelation 12:7-9; Luke 10:18; John 12:31). The story of their rebellious and wicked schemes on earth begins here in the biblical text.

The serpent was likely a real creature, which Satan had taken control of. How Satan could enter the garden is left as a mystery. All we know is that he appeared in the human story after Adam and Eve had been united in marriage, suggesting that he is interested in destroying not only individuals but also families and societies. And he does so by crafty deception; it is not for nothing that he is called the father of lies (John 8:44).

What have you learnt about Satan's modus operandi in tempting and deceiving human being? Read James 1:13-15. How are people tempted? How can we be aware of our own evil desires that may lead us to sin?

What have you learnt about Satan's modus operandi in tempting and deceiving human being?

While in conversation with Eve, we witness Satan's
modus operandi (mode of operating or manner of operating). Eve had just seen the fruit of the forbidden tree. Like all the other trees that God had made, this tree also grows "out of the ground" (Genesis 2:9), and its fruit "was good for food and pleasing to the eye" (Genesis 3:6). It is important to note that what Eve saw was exactly as God created; Satan had done nothing to enhance the attractiveness of this tree. Augustine held the view that Satan could not have done so because evil does not have an existence of its own. It is unable to create anything, since the act of creation is inherently good. Without his own garden or creatures, Satan, therefore, can only infect the good that already exists.¹² In other words, his deception was not in the appearance of the forbidden fruit but in the deadly lie that he sowed in Eve's mind about it.

Satan began by trying to confuse Eve's recollection of God's instructions. He asked her: "
Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" (Genesis 3:1). In reality, God had said to Adam: "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden" (Genesis 2:16). The word "any" had initially been used to signal God's liberal blessing. But Satan shrewdly used parts of God's actual words to make his lie sound like the original instruction, changing only two words! But now, in the new context, the word "any" makes God seem prohibitive and restrictive. How clever of him; he is always twisting Scripture. Remember how he tried to do the same when he tempted Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11)? Fortunately, the Son of God, who himself is the Word of God, could not be deceived by a Scripture-twisting devil.

Read James 1:13-15.

James 1:13-15 Reference:
When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

How are people tempted?
Satan still tries to deceive us today by painting God as a divine killjoy who makes life miserable, hiding the truth that God is our Father who longs to bless us and fill our lives with His fullness. How easy it is for us to be confused and manipulated into thinking his lies are the truth if we are not certain about God's actual words.

Unfortunately, whether it was because her knowledge of God's Word was faulty or her sin made her susceptible to the devil's twisted logic, Eve bought into Satan's lie. In her reply to Satan, Eve cut some important corners in her recitation of God's Word. She omitted the "
any" in God's initial instruction, saying she was told, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden" (Genesis 3:2). Her version makes God appear nonchalant (appearing casually calm, relaxed, and unbothered) and dismissive (showing indifference, disregard, or a lack of respect), rather than the generous Father He had actually been. She also left out the word "certainly" (God's clear and definite warning) from the phrase "will die" (Genesis 3:3, see Genesis 2:17), diluting the consequences of disobeying Him. And what a mistake it was to handle this instruction so lightly. Augustine explained that the death God was talking about included physical (when the soul separates from the body), spiritual (when the soul leaves God), and eternal death (when the soul is tormented forever) - a terrifying picture indeed, in terms of its finality and comprehensiveness (including all or nearly all relevant details, facts, or aspects).¹³

Perhaps we can excuse Eve. In Genesis 2, it appears that God had spoken those instructions about what could and could not be eaten to
Adam. Eve was not personally present. It might be that Adam had done a clumsy job relaying God's words to Eve - was he the first irresponsible Bible study leader? In any case, Adam could not be excused. He was present when the serpent talked to Eve (Genesis 3:1-7). He had every chance to correct the serpent's lie since he had received God's instructions directly. But he did not. His guilt seems the greater.

Finding the weakness in Adam and Eve and their shaky loyalty to God, Satan went for the
jugular (to harshly, aggressively, or ruthlessly attack an opponent by striking at their weakest, most vulnerable point - the throat and neck area), so to speak. He directly contradicted God when he blatantly said, "You will not certainly die" (Genesis 3:4). Satan said to Eve that if she ate the fruit, her eyes would be opened and she would be like God, knowing good and evil (Genesis 3:5). This lie coloured her perception when she saw the fruit; it was "desirable for gaining wisdom" (Genesis 3:6). Satan's lie had touched some deep part of her self, a part pridefully longed for independence and self-glory. The promise of becoming like God (and therefore not needing Him anymore) was the bait that hid the hook. Tempted by her own evil desire, she bit.

Satan is a master in probing the human heart. He knocks on its door, and if the resident human initially turns him away but still leaves the door ajar or unlocked, he knows that he has found an ally. He will cash in on the situation without hesitation.
Half-hearted replies to Satan's temptations are not good enough. Neither is harbouring doubt in order to explore sin.

Unlike popular ideas that the whole world suddenly darkened after just one bite into the forbidden fruit, the text says that Eve took some of the forbidden fruit and ate it. She also gave some to Adam, who ate it too (
Genesis 3:6). The couple did not take just a bite, but many. They had many moments to realise what they had done and to stop eating and start repenting. They did not. They found that people can enjoy sinning.

How can we be aware of our own evil desires that may lead us to sin?
But sin has its consequences.
The first negative feeling they had was shame. So, they hid from each other. They covered themselves (Genesis 3:7), ending the original sweet transparency of their relationship. They also hid from God out of fear (Genesis 3:10), no longer able to fellowship with Him freely as they used to. Sin keeps us away from holy God. It is not as if God keeps us at arms-length, but we exclude ourselves because of our guilt and shame.

God knew what had happened and asked point blank whether they had eaten the forbidden fruit. It was a moment where they could have sought God's forgiveness and found His grace. But they
close to defend and excuse themselves and started placing the blame elsewhere. Adam blamed Eve for the mishap. He even tried to blame God for "the woman you put here with me" (Genesis 3:12), implying that it was God's fault for not giving him a better and more reliable wife.

When God turned to Eve, she passed the blame to the serpent (Genesis 3:13). This was the first instance of "
The devil made me do it" excuse. None of their excuses worked, for both Adam and Eve were guilty of failing to trust God and disobeying Him.

The conversation between God and the first human beings has been repeated throughout human history. It still goes on today in every human heart. We can either defend ourselves and remain in our shame, or confess and repent and find God's forgiveness. The choice is ours.

The first humans "
took" and "ate" the forbidden fruit (
Genesis 3:6), and the human condition sank into a curse. It was only later, when the Son of God came to be part of the human race, that He provided the way of salvation when He offered himself as a sacrifice on the cross and invited people to "take and eat" what was sacrificed - His body that was broken for us (Matthew 26:26).

James 1:13-15 Reference:
When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.
