In his book "In the Beginning", Tracing the Gospel Story in Genesis, Robert Solomon presents Genesis 1 as a foundational narrative that establishes God's intentionality and grace before the Fall. The three key themes of Chapter 1—Creation, Grace, and Blessing—can be reflected upon in the following ways depending on your current life stage:

1. God’s Creation: Purpose and Sovereignty
Solomon emphasizes that creation was not an accident but an act of divine will. God speaks the world into existence, bringing order out of chaos.
  • Powerful Reflection: This theme speaks most powerfully if you are currently facing uncertainty or chaos. It serves as a reminder that God is the author of order and that your life is part of a grand, intentional design rather than an accident. 
  • Deeper Exploration: You may need to explore this if you feel aimless. Meditating on God's sovereignty can help restore a sense of inherent worth and purpose.

2. God’s Grace: Preemptive Provision
Solomon argues that grace is present from the very beginning. Grace is often discussed in the context of forgiveness. Even before human sin, God’s decision to create and sustain life was an act of preemptive grace.
  • Powerful Reflection: This is especially relevant if you are struggling with a "performance-based" identity. It reminds you that God's favour preceded any human merit or action.

3. God’s Blessings: Empowerment and Partnership
God doesn't just create; He blesses. In Genesis 1, blessing is linked to fruitfulness and the mandate for humans to partner with Him in caring for the world.

Which of these three themes—intentional creation, preemptive grace, or empowering blessing—do you feel is most absent or present in your life right now?

The most absent: God’s Creation: Purpose and Sovereignty
Being elderly in the sixties, we have seen many of our elderly neighbours and relatives passed away. Our neighbourhood is make up of many elderly uncles and aunties. They were once healthy and active, just like any of our younger peers. Everybody are busy rushing to do their daily activities and taking care of their families. But our health fails, and we rely on wheelchairs and others for our activities of daily living. And soon after, passed away. Needless to say, we are currently facing uncertainty or chaos. Our journey is getting shorter and shorter, and our runway is almost at the end.

Wars and disasters are on the rampage in most part of the earth. Inflation is still rocketing-sky high. The little we have is not enough to make survival better. Countries are making weapons of destruction, and stockpiling them to blow the world apart one day. Allies tariffs one another. Nothing comes inexpensive anymore. Although Artificial Intelligent (AI) is getting more common, not all are free to use. 3D display was once very popular, but now nobody seems to mention it. It is like an invention lost forever. Feeling somewhat aimless, we may need to meditate on God's sovereignty to help restore a sense of inherent worth and purpose.

Most or us do not have outstanding merits, and our actions are not spectacular. The world faced many related economic crises and disasters. Whenever it happens, we faced retrenchments, lesser incomes, and many other difficulties. We won't be able to survive without help. Our own effort can only be so much, and with many difficult obstacles ahead of us. Collectively, it could be our own fault, like causing global climate warming, wars, and atmospheric disasters. Fortunately, God’s decision to create and sustain life, keeps us alive for now and in eternity.

As we are struggling with our own "performance-based" identity, we may need to explore and learn how to rest in God's love without feeling the need to earn it.

Most of our current life's journey are faced with inadequacy to have a "blessed partnership" with the Creator. Being overwhelmed with our own earthly problems, our daily work and relationships with God have still a long way to go.

We may need to explore to understand what "fruitful living" looks like in our current context — moving beyond material success to spiritual impact.
