Reflection - Gender and marriage

Source (book): "In The Beginning", Tracing The Gospel Story In Genesis, Chapter 7, "The Flood and the Ark (Genesis 6:1-7:10)", Question 3, "Gender and marriage", Page 56.

What lesson can we learn about gender and marriage from this chapter, especially in a world that challenges biblical teaching and norms in these areas?
PHOTO: What lesson can we learn about gender and marriage from this chapter, especially in a world that challenges biblical teaching and norms in these areas?

Based on the study guide series "
In the Beginning", Tracing the Gospel Story in Genesis by Bishop Emeritus Dr. Robert M. Solomon (former Bishop of the Methodist Church in Singapore), Chapter 7 looks closely at the corruption of the world before the flood and how God saved Noah's family.

In Genesis 6:1-4, the Bible describes a massive breakdown in society where the "
sons of God" took any women they wanted as wives, distorting God's original design. Here are the key lessons on gender and marriage we can learn from this chapter in simple Singapore English:

Key Lessons on Gender & Marriage (Singlish-Infused Point Form)
  • Stick to God’s original "1-plus-1" formula: Before the flood, people just did whatever they liked. Men took as many wives as they wanted based on looks alone (polygamy and lust). The lesson here is that marriage is meant to be between one man and one woman, just like God planned in the beginning. Don't simply follow your eyes or what the world says is normal.

  • Marriage is a spiritual partnership, not just physical: The "sons of God" married the "daughters of humans," which represents a compromise of faith—believers marrying people who didn't care about God. When we choose a life partner, spiritual alignment matters. If a couple is not rowing the boat in the same spiritual direction, the marriage will face heavy storms.

  • The family unit is meant for passing on faith: Look at the ark—God didn't just save Noah alone; He saved Noah, his wife, his three sons, and their wives. A strong biblical marriage creates a safe "ark" for the next generation. Even when the outside world is completely wild and chaotic, a family centered on God can stay afloat and stay safe.
  • Don't let culture dilute biblical norms: In Noah's time, everyone was doing their own thing, and wickedness was everywhere. Today, the world still challenges traditional biblical views on gender and marriage. The ultimate lesson from Genesis 7 is that numbers don't make something right. Even if the whole world changes its standards, God's holiness and His definitions do not change. We must have the courage to stand firm like Noah.

Visualizing the Lesson

To help visualize this contrast between structural order and chaos, consider this diagram showing the difference between God's design and the world's breakdown:

GOD'S BIBLICAL DESIGN                  THE WORLD'S BREAKDOWN
(The Ark of Safety & Order)                 (The Flood of Chaos & Lust)

      [ One Man ]                                           [ Selfish Desires ]
               │                                                                 │
    ( Holy Covenant )                               ( Taken by Force / Lust )
               │                                                                 │
      [ One Woman ]                                     [ Multiple Partners ]
               │                                                                 │
       ▼    ▼    ▼                                                ▼    ▼    ▼
Spiritual Unity &                                   Societal Corruption &
  Generational Blessing                         Spiritual Breakdown

The Ark represents safety, boundaries, and structure built exactly to God's specifications; when society breaks down God's structural boundaries for gender and marriage, it opens the floodgates to moral chaos.

Dear Lord
PHOTO: "Dear Lord, Thank You for Your perfect design for gender and marriage. In the beginning, You created us intentionally, and You established marriage as a sacred covenant between one man and one woman.

Lord, today we live in a world that constantly challenges Your biblical teachings and norms. It is easy for us to get confused, influenced, or pressured by what society says is right. Please give us the courage and the spine of Noah. Help us to stand firm in Your truth, even if we feel like we are the only ones doing so.

We pray for our families. Help us to build our homes to be like the ark—a safe fortress of faith, purity, and love. Protect our marriages from spiritual compromise, and help couples to row in the same spiritual direction, keeping You at the very center.

When the cultural storms around us get rough, anchor our hearts securely in Your Word. May our lives and relationships bring glory to Your name and pass on a legacy of faith to the next generation.

Through Lord Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
