The biblical story of the great flood tends to be taken in either one of two ways. On the one hand, in the secular world, skeptics ask all kinds of questions: Was there truly such a global flood? Was the ark big enough to have contained all the animals mentioned? How did everyone survive in there for months? Is there archaeological evidence of the ark today? They doubt that this story is anchored in reality. On the other hand, even in the Christian community, we may be inclined to take this chapter less seriously than, say, Paul's epistles or the gospels. Many of us think of this account as a colourful and innocent story, involving animals of all kinds, to engage children in Sunday school.
But this is neither a myth nor a tale to amuse children. In Scripture, the flood is accepted as a historical event: by Jesus (Matthew 24:37-39; Luke 17:26-27), the prophets (Isaiah 54:9), and the apostles (1 Peter 3:20; 2 Peter 2:5; 3:6). It provides significant lessons about the depravity of man, the judgement of God, and God's redemptive heart.

The marriages mentioned were thus between the godly and the ungodly which were forbidden (see Deuteronomy 7:1-4; 2 Corinthians 6:14).
Another explanation is that the term "sons of God" refers to angels (demons, to be specific) of demon-possessed men, and "daughters of humans" were normal women. There are three other times where the term "sons of God" is used to refer to angels (Job 1:6; 2:1; 38:7). Thus the Septuagint (the ancient Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible) translates "sons of God" in Genesis 6:2 as "angels", Jude 6-7 also seems to support this.

It can be said that Noah's life embodied the call of Micah 6:8: to act justly, love mercy, and to walk humbly with God.
But Noah was living in a corrupt world, full of violence (Genesis 6:11). Paul's description of the last days are uncannily apt for the people in Noah's generation. They were terrible times populated by terrible people (2 Timothy 3:1-5), who found many ways to misuse or distort love. Paul lists nineteen ways of how they do so; they will be lovers of themselves, money, pleasure, and so on.
Fortunately, God had a plan. He commanded Noah to build an ark and gave specific instructions on its dimensions and construction. Noah was instructed to use pitch on the ark's internal and external surfaces. (The Hebrew word for "pitch" is "kaphar", a word frequently used in the old Testament for atonement, which creates an interesting comparison between the saving work of the ark and that of Christ. In his commentary on Genesis 6:22, Matthew Henry even refers to "Christ the Ark", our only hope amid divine judgement.²⁴) Noah's faith and trust in God, and his ready and complete obedience, are capture in the narrative that "Noah did everything just as God commanded him" (Genesis 6:22; 7:5). The moral and spiritual fibre of the man shines through.
God gave Noah further instructions about his family, eight of them in total: Noah and his three sons and their wives. He said, "Go into the ark, you and your family, because I have found you righteous in this generation" (Genesis 7:1). Significantly, Noah and his sons were monogamous amid the moral decline of their time. This suggests that part of being "righteous" and holy involves paying attention to the integrity and health of our family relationships. By protecting this family, God reveals that His salvation plan is closely tied o preserving this model of the family.
God then instructed Noah to take pairs of animals (either one or seven, depending on whether they were ritually clean or unclean). We must not escape noticing the binary gender emphasised, "male and female" (Genesis 6:19; 7:3), "male and female, came to Noah, and entered the ark, as God had commanded Noah" (Genesis 7:9). Modern ideology frames gender identity as one that is non-binary and apparently existing on a spectrum. This means that people can identify as neither strictly male or female but anywhere in between. This framework goes against the biblical, spiritual, and social foundation laid out in creation and society. God's Word stands clear against such corruptions in a world that is in rebellion against God, like in the days of Noah.

He didn't let the peer pressure get to him; instead, he set the standard and showed people what a life of right-standing with God looks like.
