A few visitors to MacRitchie Nature Trail witnessed the spectacular sight of a king cobra swinging from a tree branch on Sunday afternoon (Feb 21).


While Stomp contributor Masnashzreen kept at a safe distance, there were others who got closer to take photo and video of the reptile.

"Adult king cobras are three to four metres-long on average so I made sure I was at a safe distance to experience it face-to-face while taking the video as it is the world's longest venomous snake," he said.

"I feel that hikers and joggers will be extra cautious in this environment where we don't know what is waiting for us.


Many exclaimed loudly when the branch carrying the snake fell slightly due to the extra weight.

King cobras are native to Singapore but are rather uncommon.
Listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as vulnerable to extinction, they were first classified as locally endangered back in 1997 due to human activities, according to an article published by The Gardens' Bulletin, Singapore.

A debate has erupted online over the appropriateness of a man's action that helped a deer escape the clutches of a python.

The video recorded in Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Sri Racha district, Chonburi province on Saturday (May 30) showed a python trying to swallow a spotted deer.

Under the Wild Animals and Birds Act, any person who kills, takes or keeps any wild animal or bird (other than those specified in the Schedule) without a licence shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $1,000 and to the forfeiture of the wild animal or bird. So, don't hurt or kill that snake - call Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (Acres). Call Acres wildlife rescue hotline for help at 9783 7782. Sad but that's the circle of life.

Should we encounter a snake in the wild – out in nature – walk away slowly and quietly and try to avoid the animal. Snakes will usually slither away from humans so take care not to provoke them. Even the non-venomous pythons can and will bite if they feel threatened.

Snakes dislike the odor of ammonia so one option is to spray it around any affected areas. Another option is to soak a rug in ammonia and place it in an unsealed bag near any areas inhabited by snakes to deter them away. Snakes don't like the smell of the mixture and the fumes are also itchy on their skin.

GALAPAGOS - A group of giant tortoises who have lived in captivity for decades and helped rescue their species from the brink of extinction were released into the wild in the Galapagos Islands on Monday (15 June 2020).

The tortoises were bred in captivity to repopulate the islands after their numbers in the wild went down to just 15 individuals, said park director Danny Rueda. There are now more than 2,000 of them on Espanola Island, he said.

The giant tortoises are known for their long, leathery necks and lifespans of over 100 years.

Diego's return to his native Espanola comes after around eight decades of living in a California zoo and then in the tortoise recovery programme on Santa Cruz island in the Galapagos.

For his final journey home, Diego was taken by boat to Espanola, along with 14 of his companions.

From there, rangers used backpacks to take the tortoises - who can weigh up to 180kg - to an area where cactus grows in abundance that will help them readapt. There, they will be monitored with GPS trackers.

It has been a conservation success story.

"We can shut down the captive breeding programme of this species because their natural behaviour is effective," said Mr Rueda.

Probably no passage in the Bible has been so misunderstood and misinterpreted as Genesis 1:26, where God gives humankind “dominion” over nature and animals. This has often been mistakenly interpreted as a synonym for ownership, giving humans the right to treat nature and animals as they see fit. However, since there was no violence in the Garden of Eden and since God described all of Creation as “very good,” it is much more reasonable to regard human “dominion” as a sacred responsibility to be good stewards of the natural world. In addition to caring for and protecting the earth, Genesis 1:28 commands humankind to “replenish the earth.”
