SINGAPORE - A woman whose house was on fire escaped by climbing out the window of her fifth storey apartment and clung on to the ledge for about 20 minutes.

The fire was raging in the living room of her Tanah Merah Kechil Road condominium unit on Wednesday afternoon, Lianhe Wanbao reported.


Bystanders and condominium residents who had gathered below were shocked when they saw the woman lying on the ledge and clinging on tightly.

Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officers pulled the woman, 35, back into unit after the fire was put out.

Wanbao reported that the woman escaped from the bedroom window because the fire was blocking access to the front door.

An ambulance later conveyed her and two other women, aged around 50 and 70 years, to the hospital.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

FOUR women were among the 16 people who helped a South Korean man trapped under a truck last Wednesday and recognised for their efforts.

They were given awards for their public spiritedness by the Singapore Civil Defence Force yesterday.

The 16 were among a group of passers-by who had helped Kim Seong Mo, 35, who had been pinned underneath a trailer truck after an accident in Boon Keng Road.

A 90sec video of the incident, which showed about 30 bystanders rushing to lift the truck to free him, went viral on social media.

Among the four women recognised yesterday were colleagues Diana Bregente and Er Sing Yee. The two sales managers had been on their way to lunch and were near the scene.

The Sales Manager from Spectrum, was among the first few to respond when the accident occurred.

Ms Bregente, 36, told Shin Min Daily News that when they found out Mr Kim had been trapped, he was close to being rescued from under the truck by other passers-by. She quickly opened an umbrella to shade Mr Kim and a man who pulled him out, as it was very warm that day.

Ms Er, 32, called for an ambulance, checked how serious Mr Kim's injuries were and helped him to retrieve his mobile phone to contact his family.

Among those who helped to lift the truck was software engineer Asif Iqbal, 33, The Straits Times reported. The Singapore permanent resident from India was one of two men who ducked underneath the truck to pull Mr Kim out.

"We were all pushing the truck, then I realised, someone (had) to go underneath to pull him out," he said. "This was an incident where everyone stopped worrying about work stress and concerns, we put everything aside.

We just wanted to help the man."

On Wednesday, more than 30 people rushed to a man’s rescue after hearing his cries for help.

The 35-year-old man was eventually freed after the passersby managed to lift the truck's wheels high enough. He was eventually sent to Tan Tock Seng hospital with a fractured leg, according to authorities.

The incident was recorded by Mr Foo Suan Wang who uploaded the video online, which quickly went viral. By Sunday morning, the video has been viewed more than 347,000 times and garnered 5,900 shares.

Commenters lauded the rescuers for stepping forward, calling them “Heroes!” and praising them for a job well done.

Mr Mohamed Zakaria, a senior technician who happened to be passing by, said there was a man in his 60s who led the efforts. However, he was not present at the ceremony on Sunday.

Mr Iqbal, a software engineer from India who was one of two men who pulled the victim to safety, said everyone spontaneously gathered to help.

"You could see people from different countries, but (all) the thoughts (were) of saving the man on the spot," Mr Iqbal said.

Those who helped said it took about 10 to 15 minutes to get the victim out.

IN THE event of a fire, if you see a fireman jabbing on a remote control instead of operating a hand-held jet, do not be alarmed.

He is, in fact, fighting the fire. The unmanned firefighting machine - the newest vehicle on the block for the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) - can be remotely operated from as far away as 300m, or across the length of three football fields.

At 2.3m high, the machine is taller than an average man and is expected to be able to take the place of 10 men.

Able to spray water, mist or foam up to 60m away, it is more powerful than the hand-held water jet currently used.

The unmanned machine has a flow rate of up to 3,000 litres of water per minute - 12 times more than the 250 litres that a hand-held jet is capable of.

The remote-controlled firefighter can be deployed to put out oil refinery, warehouse and even underground fires, said Major Ivan Kwok, commander of Yishun Fire Station, who is in charge of the project.

"It will allow firefighters to perform other tasks, such as search for victims, instead of manning hoses for hours," he said.

Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs Masagos Zulkifli, who attended the SCDF's workplan seminar yesterday, said: "It gives us tremendous firefighting capability, without compromising the safety of our officers."

The use of unmanned systems is gaining prominence worldwide because they are cheaper and they reduce the need to send personnel to risky areas or hot spots.

SCDF statistics show warehouse fires here increased threefold from seven to 21 last year. One fire involving three warehouses at Jurong Industrial Estate in April last year took about 60 personnel and two hours to bring under control.

Also being explored is an automated system of moving casualties, which could be used when there are mass casualties.

Mr Benedict Koh, president of the Fire Safety Managers' Association, said the system would be able to access areas too dangerous for officers and would also help to alleviate firefighters' physical exhaustion.

The first unmanned firefighting machine has been stationed in Jurong. In July, three more will be deployed, to stations in Changi, Yishun and Jurong Island - areas flagged as potential spots for larger fires.

Three S’porean students in Tacloban found safe and well
Singapore — The three Singaporean students who had lost contact with their families for days in the typhoon-ravaged Philippine city of Tacloban have made contact and been flown safely to the capital Manila.

Ms Eileen Heng, Ms Alyssa Chee and Ms Vanessa Chong — all aged 23 and final-year students at Flinders University in Australia — were working in Tacloban with the non-profit organisation, Volunteer for the Visayans, as part of a month-long university placement project.

They had left for Tacloban more than three weeks ago and were to return to Singapore on Nov 16. They had been uncontactable since last Friday morning, when Typhoon Haiyan made landfall and crippled communications.

In a statement yesterday, Flinders University’s Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Andrew Parkin said the students had been found safe and well.

Ms Vanessa Chong’s sister, Amelia Chong, confirmed yesterday that her elder sister had contacted their mother. “My dearest sister Vanessa Chong has finally called mummy and she is ALIVE and safe in one piece. She is now in Tacloban Airport and is safe with the Singapore Civil Defence Force,” she wrote on her Facebook page.

Ms Chong’s mother, Mdm Lay Sim, said her daughter had called her using a phone that she had borrowed from the Americans at Tacloban airport. The call lasted less than a minute. “Mum, I’m well, I’m well. Can you get the Singapore authorities to get me out of here?” Ms Chong had said to her mother over the phone.

Mdm Lay Sim expects the students to return to Singapore today.

A cousin of Ms Alyssa Chee’s, Ms Goh Sing Yee, told TODAY that Ms Chee had telephoned her mother just before she boarded a plane at the Tacloban airport.

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson said: “The three Singaporean girls ... who were earlier uncontactable, have arrived safely in Manila, and were met by the staff of our Embassy. We hope to reunite the girls with their families as soon as possible.”
