Three S’porean students in Tacloban found safe and well
Singapore — The three Singaporean students who had lost contact with their families for days in the typhoon-ravaged Philippine city of Tacloban have made contact and been flown safely to the capital Manila.

Ms Eileen Heng, Ms Alyssa Chee and Ms Vanessa Chong — all aged 23 and final-year students at Flinders University in Australia — were working in Tacloban with the non-profit organisation, Volunteer for the Visayans, as part of a month-long university placement project.

They had left for Tacloban more than three weeks ago and were to return to Singapore on Nov 16. They had been uncontactable since last Friday morning, when Typhoon Haiyan made landfall and crippled communications.

In a statement yesterday, Flinders University’s Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Andrew Parkin said the students had been found safe and well.

Ms Vanessa Chong’s sister, Amelia Chong, confirmed yesterday that her elder sister had contacted their mother. “My dearest sister Vanessa Chong has finally called mummy and she is ALIVE and safe in one piece. She is now in Tacloban Airport and is safe with the Singapore Civil Defence Force,” she wrote on her Facebook page.

Ms Chong’s mother, Mdm Lay Sim, said her daughter had called her using a phone that she had borrowed from the Americans at Tacloban airport. The call lasted less than a minute. “Mum, I’m well, I’m well. Can you get the Singapore authorities to get me out of here?” Ms Chong had said to her mother over the phone.

Mdm Lay Sim expects the students to return to Singapore today.

A cousin of Ms Alyssa Chee’s, Ms Goh Sing Yee, told TODAY that Ms Chee had telephoned her mother just before she boarded a plane at the Tacloban airport.

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson said: “The three Singaporean girls ... who were earlier uncontactable, have arrived safely in Manila, and were met by the staff of our Embassy. We hope to reunite the girls with their families as soon as possible.”

Study shows no difference in amount of vitamins in foods that are produced organically, conventionally

NEW YORK - Organic produce and meat typically is not any better for you than conventional food when it comes to vitamin and nutrient content, although it does generally reduce exposure to pesticides and antibiotic-resistant bacteria, according to a study.

Dr Crystal Smith-Spangler and her team of researchers from Stanford University and the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care reviewed more than 200 studies that compared either the health of people who ate organic or conventional foods or, more commonly, nutrient and contaminant levels in the foods themselves. The foods included organic and non-organic fruits, vegetables, grains, meat, poultry, eggs and milk.

Many of the studies did not specify their standards for what constituted "organic" food, which can cost as much as twice what conventional food costs, the researchers wrote in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Dr Smith-Spangler and her colleagues found there was no difference in the amount of vitamins in plant or animal products produced organically and conventionally - and the only nutrient difference was slightly more phosphorous in the organic products.

Organic milk and chicken may also contain more omega-3 fatty acids, but that was based on only a few studies.

But there were more significant differences between organic and conventional food, in the amount of pesticides and antibiotic-resistant bacteria in food.

More than one third of conventional produce had detectable pesticide residues, compared with 7 per cent of organic produce samples. Organic pork and chicken were 33 per cent less likely to carry bacteria resistant to three or more antibiotics than conventionally produced meat.

Culmination of six-year-old vision as grandest of three gardens opens this week

SINGAPORE - It took over six years for the dream to become reality. Now, as Singapore's Bay South Garden nears its official opening on Thursday (28.06.2012), the pointman behind the design of the project still marvels when he sees the final result.

"People can't believe what's built is actually real, it still looks like an imagined place," said Mr Andrew Grant, Director of British landscape architecture consultancy Grant Associates, which won the contract in 2006 to design the project.

There was one concession that he made. Speaking to TODAY in a phone interview, Mr Grant said he had originally envisioned a whole forest of man-made "supertrees" within the garden. Practicality, however, prevailed and 18 were agreed upon.

"When it became clear how we wanted to use them and how they would sit in the landscape, it became clear that we didn't need (so many)," he said.

An aerial walk through an eucalyptus forest in Perth, Australia was one of the inspirations behind the clusters of supertrees. The forest, called Valley of the Giants, featured eucalyptus trees 60m to 70m tall, and had a walkway that let visitors enjoy the grandeur (impressiveness) from aloft (at a great height).

The Garden's own supertrees, ranging between 25m and 50m in height, will not just be clad in exotic greenery, but will also function as receptacles to collect rainwater, provide shade, harvest solar energy and house a bar or F&B outlet.

While it drew inspiration from abroad for "supertrees", the design team was conscious of making the Gardens by the Bay "a really Singaporean project".

Thus, the orchid, Singapore's national flower, was chosen as the general motif and the garden's layout was structured like the flower.

"The footpaths and the networks would be the stems, the orchid flowers would be the special gardens, the roots and leaves becoming the land forms and infrastructure," said Mr Grant.

The onsite team worked with Dr Tan Wee Kiat, Chief Executive of Gardens by the Bay, and National Parks Board officials, and "the collaborative spirit was exceptional", said Mr Grant who travelled to Singapore every four to six weeks to oversee the project.

The Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society raised S$5.1 million at its fifth charity show, titled ‘Love All’, yesterday evening. Its target was S$3.8 million. Regional artistes, including well-known Taiwanese rocker Wu Bai and Hong Kong singer Jenny Tseng, belted out hits Linkduring the live three-hour show over MediaCorp’s Channel 8.

Homegrown artistes also chipped in with an array of performances.

Established in 1978, the non-profit voluntary organisation has provided community-based services in social, health, emotional and financial support to the needy.

Last year, the charitable organisation had an annual budget of S$43 million to manage and operate more than 50 charity homes, centres and services, including the Ang Mo Kio-Thye Hua Kwan Hospital. Despite increasing overheads and manpower shortage, the Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society has managed to expand its services.

Recently, it launched three projects, including the Senior Group Homes to help the elderly live independently.

The public can still call donation lines to make their contributions till April 8.

Julie Thomsen and the group from Ray Tebeck Auto Electrics want the bras to cover one of their three cars in Sunday's Demolition Derby at Arunga Park in Alice Springs.

The idea came from Anne Twohig, the wife of long-time Demolition Derby competitor Gene Gilby, after Julie put out a call on Facebook for suggestions.

The bra car's driver and builder, Ray Tebeck, said the result of their social network brainstorming "just came out of nowhere, like all great ideas".

The 1996 EF Ford Falcon Wagon will get a coat of pink paint before being covered from head to foot in bras.

The group is hoping to win the "best dressed" category, with proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Foundation.

Julie is the mother of Junior Sedan driver Jack Thomsen, who recently raised more than $4000 in the World's Greatest Shave.

She recently lost a family member to cancer and said the bra idea was just another way to help a great cause.

If Derby favourite Tebeck wins tonight he will donate the $1000 prize money to the Breast Cancer Foundation.

Petticoat Lane lingerie shop owner Clarice Kimlin is offering women who donate to the cause a 25 per cent discount on their next bra purchase at her Todd Mall shop.

Participating bras can be dropped off at Ray Tebeck Auto Electrics or at Battery City in George Crescent before Sunday morning.

We wouldn't recommend wearing your stilettos as a bra but here's Britain's Got Talent judge Amanda Holden stripped down to her knickers for Fabulous Magazine.

It's okay though it's all in the name of charity. Amanda was snapped nearly naked to launch the magazine's Heels that Heal campaign in association with women's health charity Wellbeing of Women (WoW).

She joins the likes of Kylie Minogue, Cheryl Cole and the Prime Minister's wife Sarah Brown who will all be auctioning shoes on eBay.

People will also be able to bid for a series of exciting experiences including afternoon tea with Rachel Stevens or a shopping trip with Miss Holden.

The auction hopes to raise £500,000 to help young women dealing with chronic gynaecological issues such as PMS endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome.

As well as the stars shoes, women can bid for a shopping trip with Amanda Holden or afternoon tea with Rachel Stevens.

Mind you I think plenty of men would get the cash out for that one.

Masks and costumes are usually reserved for the movies or parties. but recently, “superheros” have taken to the streets of the Beijing to donate to the poor.

One superhero is a woman, going by the name of Chinese Redbud Woman (北京紫荆侠), was inspired by a Hong Kong version. She wears revealing tight clothes and a blue mask.

The Sina microblog home of the website dooo.cc talked about the obvious flashiness of the “superhero”:

Why does the Chinese Redbud Woman need to wear revealing clothes when she is doing charitable things?

This kind of self-promotion, can be seen as sex charity. However, compared to charity organizations that are corrupt, it’s not harming anyone.
