Singapore, 10 November 2011 – Singapore Post (SingPost) shares Singapore’s pride in hosting the 20th World Orchid Conference (20WOC), “Where New and Old World Orchids Meet”, at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre from 13 to 20 November 2011 by issuing a series of specially-designed commemorative stamps.

The 20WOC is co-organised by National Parks Board (NParks) and Orchid Society of South East Asia (OSSEA). Last held in Singapore 48 years ago, Singapore is the only Asian city with the rare privilege of hosting the iconic international event for a second time.

On Saturday, 12 November 2011, the First Day Cover of this stamp set will be featured at the Opening Ceremony of the 20WOC. In addition, a special Collector’s Sheet will be issued to make this event even more memorable for the visiting delegates.

The orchids illustrated in this stamp issue will also be on display at the World Orchid Show, which is a part of the 20WOC. The World Orchid Show will feature more than 75 stunning displays of orchid species and hybrids by exhibitors from 23 countries.

These orchids can also be found in The Singapore Botanic Gardens and National Orchid Garden. The Singapore Botanic Gardens and National Orchid Garden boast among the finest orchid collections in the world.

At the National Orchid Garden, three hectares of carefully landscaped slopes provide a setting for over 1,000 species and 2,000 hybrids, with about 600 species and hybrids on display.

PHOTO: Renathera 20th WOC Singapore 2011 (face value 45¢): This official flower of the show, exhibit and conference. This red orchid is free flowering and produces long lasting blooms all year round. The red blossoms signify prosperity, wealth and success.

PHOTO: Dendrobium World Peace (face value 65¢): The well shaped, good texture flowers of some 7cm across, come with white or creamy petals and sepals that are veined light purple. The vigorous hybrid commemorates the 50th anniversary of the United Nations in 1995.

PHOTO: Cyrtocidium Goldiana (face value 80¢): This flower is widely known as a “Golden Shower” in Singapore and other parts of the world. where it has been a staple cut flower in the early years. The elegant yellow flower gives an overall impression of a ball-room dancer in a voluminous skirt lending itself to be also called the “Dancing Ladies”.

PHOTO: Grammatophyllum speciosum (face value $2): This is largest orchid in the world with sprays of lowers two meters or more in length. Also known as the Tiger Orchid because markings on the flowers resemble that of the skin of a tiger.

Products on Sale
Featured in this stamp issue are five well-known orchids. Depicted on the 1st local stamp is Vanda Miss Joaquim, the national flower of Singapore, and on the 45-cents stamp, Renanthera 20th WOC Singapore, the official flower of the 20WOC. The 65-cents stamp portrayed Dendrobium World Peace, and on the 80-cents stamp is Cyrtocidium Goldiana which is popularly known as ‘Golden Shower’ in Singapore and ‘Dancing Ladies’. The S$2 stamp features Grammatophyllum speciosum, the largest orchid in the world and is also known as the Tiger Orchid.

Organised by National Parks Board (NParks) and Orchid Society of South East Asia (OSSEA), the 20th World Orchid Conference is a prestigious international event that will be held in Singapore from 13 to 20 November 2011.
