Ageing should not be talked about here as a problem, as such a perception can end up becoming self-fulfilling; instead, it should be reframed to a more "positive agenda".

Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, chairman of the People's Action Party (PAP) Seniors Group (PAP.SG), which champions elderly causes, said this yesterday at an event to mark the International Day of Older Persons.

"Should we not try to be able to say this - that our best years are ahead of us... Can we also aspire to become the best place on earth to retire and grow old in?"

Not just as a result of policies and initiatives at the government level, Mr Tan said, but also because of community activities and individual participation.

"Can we, at the individual level, embrace this and participate fully in a whole effort to make this vision a reality?" he asked at the event organised by PAP.SG.

Mr Tan, who is Speaker of Parliament, said while an ageing population brings deep and serious challenges to many societies, Singapore may be able to thrive, given its effectiveness in making long-term plans to tackle related issues.

At the event in Hotel Miramar Singapore, Mr Tan announced that the PAP.SG had produced a handbook to help party activists explain government initiatives to seniors, as they had found it challenging to track recent policy changes.

The PAP.SG Ambassador Handbook covers healthcare initiatives and other areas, including Central Provident Fund contribution rates for older workers.

Dr Thang Leng Leng, a member of the PAP.SG executive committee, who helped produce the handbook, said: "The idea to have the handbook is pretty much ground-up... It is just a first step and is in a ring file, so that we can always update it when there are new policies."

Mr Tan said it is the latest of a number of party members' initiatives for seniors, which range from a Senior Friendship Circle in Ayer Rajah to assistance programmes for vulnerable seniors in Bedok.

The handbook will also be available online.

Speaking to the media later, Mr Tan said that several years ago, terms such as "silver tsunami" were used to describe the ageing population.

"But what if we say, let's turn it around because it's inevitable... Why don't we make it a positive thing? A lot of it entails us embracing it," he said.

We have confidence that we will be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Our body may appear older, but our insides are being renewed daily. An elderly Christian never truly gets old. Christ became perfection on your behalf and died for your iniquities. Life will never stop being all about Christ. Always remember that you’re still alive for a reason.
No matter what age Christians should never fear death. [2]

Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin, presiding over his first Budget marathon, spoke somewhat wistfully yesterday of his desire to join in the debates.

"Some of you think the biggest challenge being up here is how one manages to stay awake or how we answer the call of nature.
"Well, that will remain a trade secret," he said, bringing levity to eight days of parliamentary debate filled largely with serious speeches and equally serious questions.

"What I find most challenging is having the desire to participate but not being able to do so in a way that all of you do.

"So what you all have is a unique, precious privilege to make a significant impact on the well-being of our people."

Elected Speaker last September, the former Cabinet Minister would typically, in his five years as an office holder in Government, take great pains to explain the issues of the various portfolios he held.

So, in the dying minutes of the debate, he seemed almost unable to contain himself, declaring with a grin: "Finally, I get to speak! It is my once-a-year occasion."

In his 10-minute speech, he gave MPs a pat on the back for their active participation even as he stressed the need to be pragmatic in the journey towards the nation's ideals and aspirations.

Substance and details matter too, not just eloquent, emotive rhetoric, he added.

Mr Tan spoke of trade-offs that must be made, along with difficult, unpopular choices.

This is especially so when seeking to balance four purposes he distilled from the debates: making things better for individual Singaporeans and the wider society, plus meeting today's needs while catering for future ones.

The key is to be united, he added.

Differences are often amplified during debates, but there are more points of convergence and agreement than not, he observed.

He cited the move taken for the vote on the national Budget, in which members voted not by saying "aye", but electronically at their individual seats.

All Workers' Party MPs present voted against Budget 2018.

They had said they could not support the future rise in the goods and services tax without more information.

Said Mr Tan: "Argue, fight by all means, but within limits and in a responsible manner.

"I'm thankful that despite it all, we do have a unity of thought and conviction on where we should go and how we should position ourselves as a nation."

Mr Tan stressed the need to build a caring society.

Going the extra mile for each other will "make us great as a nation", he said.

"Unlike everything in the Budget, it cannot be mandated by law, but it can be nurtured. And it is for us as Singaporeans to respond."

Outgoing Minister for Social and Family Development Tan Chuan-Jin received an exuberant and unusual farewell yesterday.

About 150 employees of his ministry, the National Council of Social Service and SG Enable joined him for a warm-up session before he led some of them on a 6km run at MacRitchie Reservoir.

Mr Tan, 48, is set to take up the role of Speaker of Parliament next week.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong nominated him to be Singapore's 10th Speaker, which requires him to step down from the Cabinet.

Netizens, surprised by the nomination of a core member of the fourth-generation political leadership as Speaker, had seized on Mr Tan's Facebook for clues on its significance.

In one of the posts, he said: "May God continue to grant me wisdom, courage and love in all that I do. However inadequate as I may be, I hope that I can fight the good fight, finish the race and keep the faith." (2 Timothy 4:7)

On Wednesday evening, he urged people not to read too much into it, saying he noticed "some doing serious practical criticism of every word and punctuation... It's an affirmation of what I believe and cherish, as best as I can manage.

"I've shared these sentiments before so relax... no need to over-interpret LOL," he added, using the acronym for "laughing out loud".

Tan Chuan-Jin was glad to accept Mr Lee's nomination and hoped fellow MPs would support it. He said: "Good ideas can come from both sides of the House, as does good intent. In fact, they abound throughout the length and breadth of our society. Our duty must be to harness these for the common good."
