This year's finalists include Miss Cate Lin Loo, whose sister and mother also took part in the pageant, and an 18-year-old footballer.

Her mother, Madam Angela Lee, is her role model.

The older woman was first runner-up of Miss Universe Singapore (MUS) 1994 and won Miss World Singapore 1994.

When her older sister, Miss Loo May Tia, made it to the top eight of MUS in 2018, Miss Cate Lin Loo could not wait for her turn.

Miss Loo, now 19 and one of the finalists of MUS 2021, told The New Paper: "I saw how competing in MUS transformed my sister into the beautiful, determined and empowered woman she is today.

"Now that I am of age, I feel like this is the time for me to continue the family tradition."

The MUS 2021 finals will be live-streamed on Sept 17 at 9pm, as part of virtual fashion festival The Front Row, via thefrontrow.style, and the winner will represent Singapore on the event's global stage in December in Eilat, Israel.

Miss Loo is on a gap year for her beauty pageant journey and will be studying medicine in Australia as the next chapter of her life.

Before that, she hopes to use the MUS platform to advocate for equal access to healthcare.

When Miss Loo was nine, her mother was diagnosed with a genetic disorder called protein C deficiency and suffered a near-fatal pulmonary embolism, which is when a blood clot travels to a lung artery and blocks blood flow.

Miss Loo said: "From a young age, I saw the power of medicine and healthcare and how it was able to save my mother's life.

"From then on, I wanted to be that beacon of light for others."

Also a finalist in MUS 2021 is Miss Lila Tan, an 18-year-old student at Hillside World Academy, who is also a football player and model.

Raised in Shanghai, China, from the age of two, she picked up football when she was 12 and joined the Singapore national team when she returned to Singapore last year.

Describing her body as "fit and muscular", Miss Tan initially found it difficult to settle into the "traditional model look".

Balancing being an athlete and a model was "the biggest dilemma", and she managed to pull herself out of the mental struggle through "self-love and healthy eating".

Said Miss Tan: "I think modelling has progressed to be more than just looks. I see the industry slowly becoming more inclusive of different body shapes and types, and I want to advocate for that further."

Signing up for MUS was a "surreal" experience.

She said: "Previously, I could not envision myself in a beauty pageant, but now I know it is so much more than just being pretty.

"It is about unifying and empowering women across the world and inspiring young girls to be confident of themselves to do whatever they set their minds on."

If you're running the "happiest 5km on the planet" next month, you might just spot former Miss Singapore Universe Lynn Tan in the race.

The 25-year-old is the ambassador for The Color Run Singapore, an untimed race where participants are sprinkled with coloured powder at every 1km interval.

My Paper speaks to Ms Tan about the race, her fitness regime and how she motivates herself.

What is your workout routine?
I try to run once or twice a week for half an hour, and lift light weights to tone up. I go for walks outside my house and maintain a healthy diet.

Why are fitness and exercise important?
I placed more emphasis on exercising when I joined the Miss Universe Singapore pageant as I wanted to win the Miss Body Beautiful award.

I think that being healthy allows you to enjoy all that life has to offer and live life to the fullest.

I believe that your physical well-being contributes to your mental state of mind; feeling slim and toned makes me feel more confident.

How do you motivate yourself to stick to your workout routine?
I look in the mirror and paint a mental picture of the body I would like to have before starting my exercise.

Do you have any favourite locations to exercise?
I like to run on a treadmill in air-conditioned places. Singapore is too hot and the recent haze (made it unhealthy to) run outside.

What precautions do you take when exercising?
I don't overdo it.

As the ambassador for The Color Run Singapore, what are your hopes for the event?
I hope that we will raise awareness and funds for Project Happy Feet, which is a Singapore-based not-for-profit organisation set up to empower underprivileged youth and children in developing countries.

Is this your first race? How are you preparing for it?
This is my second race. My first run was the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge last year. I haven't been (preparing for it any) differently.

How can The Color Run make an impact on Singaporeans' health and fitness?
As we are expecting 16,000 participants, a 5km run could be invigorating and refreshing for everyone.

For those who run regularly, it will be a breeze.

As for those who don't, perhaps they will enjoy it and it could inspire them to start their own exercise regimes.

Do you have any fitness tips for busy executives?
Watch your diet and weigh yourself once a week.

Be consistent with your exercise and get a workout buddy so that you can motivate each other.

Try to work out at a time when you have the most energy, because fitness experts say that (exercising at such a time will) yield the best results.

Winning the crown is 24 year old mergers and acquisitions associate Lynn Tan.  A lady of confidence, Lynn is poised and answered her question during the Q&A with conviction quoting Mother Theresa “Reach high for stars like hidden in your soul.  Dream deep because every dream precedes the goal”.

Lynn is 1.71m tall and her statistics are 34(B), 26(W) and 35(H).

Lynn has previously won the Star Model Singapore Award at the Asia Model Festival Awards 2012 in Seoul as well as the FHM Model of the Year 2011 competition.  She has also previously modeled for La Perla, Millionaire Asia Runway, as well as the First Media Design Runway at Hilton.

Quoting Mother Teresa paid off for Miss Lynn Tan who went on to win the Miss Universe Singapore title yesterday (Sunday) evening.

When a contest judge, local actress Rebecca Lim, asked her what her strongest selling point would be as Singapore’s ambassador, Miss Tan said: “I will be the modern Singapore woman, beautiful, strong and ready to stand for what I believe in.

“Yet, I will hold on to my values that have brought me here.”
