SINGAPORE – What started off as a joke became a dream come true for McDonald’s fans Elson Tong and Yong Yong Qing when they tied the knot at the fast-food chain’s West Coast Park outlet on July 19.

With 55 of their family members and friends present, they exchanged vows in the restaurant’s pavilion, with the iconic golden arches in the background.

The couple, both 26, met in junior college in 2015 and have been together for about seven years.

On a visit to McDonald’s in April 2021, Mr Tong, who works in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, joked about marrying a buttermilk crispy chicken burger as it is his favourite item on the menu.

Ms Yong, a senior associate at Changi Airport Group, responded in jest, saying: “
Why don’t we get married at McDonald’s?”

The idea seemed amusing at first but gradually grew on the pair, who wanted a relaxing and fun solemnisation ceremony.

“
It reflects our personalities as a couple; we like to keep things simple and fuss-free. We also wanted our guests to be able to dress comfortably,” Ms Yong told The Straits Times.

Their families and friends were taken by surprise when they heard the couple’s plans.

Mr Tong said: “
My parents thought it was a joke at first, but they warmed up to the idea quickly and were supportive. They liked that the ceremony was intimate.”

Ms Yong called the McDonald’s West Coast Park outlet in May and got the manager’s approval to book the pavilion on a weekday, when the restaurant is less crowded.

Their guests arrived dressed in hues of red and yellow, in line with the theme of the venue. Ms Yong wore a simple halter-neck white dress, while Mr Tong was in a tan suit.

The couple paid the fast-food chain about $700 in total for the food and venue.

Said Ms Yong: “
We really appreciate the McDonald’s staff who helped us with serving the food and cleaning up the venue after.

“
The manager even came down on her day off to make sure everything was in order.”

The couple said they are glad their guests enjoyed the no-frills event.

“
In the words of the McDonald’s slogan, we’re lovin’ it.”

Fast food chain McDonald's officially launched a new menu exclusively for its fans in Singapore today (July 13), and it has certainly generated quite the buzz among everyone.

Inspired by local signature delicacies, the menu consists of a Nasi Lemak Burger, Chendol McFlurry, Bandung McFizz, Coconut Pie and McFizz, Coconut Pie and Criss Cut Fries.

As we countdown to National Day, McDonald’s is launching a delicious menu selection that puts a modern spin on traditional local favourites!
In conjunction with the Singapore Food Festival (SFF) 2017, McDonald’s is celebrating the diverse local food heritage with a creative touch to whet local appetites by introducing familiar local fare that we grew up eating such as Nasi Lemak, Bandung and Chendol.
Inspired by the iconic Malay dish, the ‘Nasi Lemak’ Burger combines the juicy chicken thigh patty, marinated in rich aromatic coconut flavours and coated with cornflakes crunch for an extra crispy finish, together with a golden fried egg, caramelised onions, crunchy cucumber and topped with a dash of sweet and spicy sambal sauce. "Going for a blind taste test, I would have never guessed that the burger I was tasting was from McDonald’s, the sweet spiciness from the sambal was nicely balanced and the chicken was tender and crunchy. Overall it did feel like having nasi lemak and would have loved another one." [2]

The Chendol McFlurry, diners can expect the regular vanilla soft serve flavour, except that this version comes with Gula Melaka sauce and Chendol jelly bits. [4]
There was a generous amount of gula melaka sauce and bits of coconut shavings. It’s a tad sweet but still enjoyable on the whole. [3]

Stomp contributor Vi saw a huge crowd at McDonald's The Metropolis outlet at around 12.30pm today, when she was having lunch in the area.

According to her, the queue was so long that it extended beyond the fast food restaurant's premises.
So does McDonald's new menu live up to the hype?

Netizens have been leaving their feedback on McDonald's Facebook page and the nasi lemak burger, unsurprisingly, appears to be the most popular item.

Facebook user Nasrul X Shahida gave the burger an 8/10 rating and wrote: "From the rempah chicken fillet to the slightly spicy sambal tumis, it was a delight at every bite. The sambal tumis actually tasted like sambal tumis albeit being sweeter and slightly less spicy."

Another user, Noor Hayati, said, "Nasi Lemak burger does taste a bit like Nasi Lemak and the sambal is nice. Being old school, I still prefer the original Nasi Lemak but of course this is a must try."

Online publication Stirr recently did a "brutally honest taste test" of the burger.
