"It was drizzling at the time. I had a clear view of the lightning from my balcony so I recorded it on my mobile phone," a resident told 8World.

She said it was the "scariest one" she had ever seen, adding, "the thunder was so loud, it nearly made me drop my phone."

Earlier this month, the Meteorological Service Singapore said that wet weather will continue for the rest of March, with higher chances of lightning and thundery showers.

Mr Gabriel Tan had to contend with heavy rain - and an unexpected explosion - when he took his son to a childcare centre yesterday.

He was driving past a multistorey carpark in Bukit Batok West when he saw a lightning bolt strike the ground in front of his car.

"If I had accelerated, my car could have been struck (by the bolt) or hit by the flying bricks," Mr Tan, 34, an oil and gas trader, told The Straits Times.

The SCDF told The Straits Times that it received a call at 9.10am about a flash fire from a manhole at Block 439 Bukit Batok West.

"Fortunately, we were all safe," he said, adding that he managed to stop the car in time.

The blast at the entrance of a carpark opposite Block 439B sent bricks hurtling skywards and unsealed a manhole cover.

The incident, captured on Mr Tan's dashboard camera at about 8.40am, has been shared multiple times on WhatsApp.

Mr Tan, who lives in the estate, said his wife, who works in the IT industry, and toddler son were in the rear passenger seats.

"The sound of the impact of the strike was not exceptionally loud because my son continued watching cartoons in the car without being distracted," he said.

Hong Kah North MP Amy Khor told ST she understands there are telecommunications cables beneath the manhole.

"The incident caught many residents by surprise this morning," she said.

She added that the presence of staff from agencies such as Chua Chu Kang Town Council, PUB, City Gas and Singtel assured residents that the incident was being investigated.

"For the residents' safety, I asked the relevant authorities to check the various manholes in the vicinity. Before I left the site this morning, the authorities had started barricading and inspecting several manholes."

The SCDF said the incident did not lead to a fire and there was no reported injury.

It has cordoned off the affected lane to the carpark.

Oslo - More than 300 wild reindeer have been killed by lightning in southern Norway, Norwegian officials said on Monday, in the largest such incident known to date.

The 323 reindeer, including 70 young, were found on Friday by a gamekeeper on the Hardangervidda plateau, a national park where Europe's largest herd of some 10,000 wild reindeer roam freely.

Television footage showed the animals' dead bodies lying close together on the ground.

"There were very strong storms in the area on Friday. The animals stay close together in bad weather and these ones were hit by lightning," an official from the Norwegian Environment Agency, Kjartan Knutsen, told AFP.

Reindeer are social creatures and usually move in packs.

"It's unusual. We've never seen anything like this on this scale," Knutsen said.  Norwegian authorities have yet to decide what to do with the animals.  "We're going to decide soon whether to let nature run its own course or whether we will do something," he said.

Of the 323 reindeer killed, five had to be put down due to their injuries.

Fairy tale's Reindeer
PHOTO: Reindeer, or caribou, can outperform all other land animals in their energy efficiency - so are a fitting choice as the legendary Christmas sleigh-pullers! They're more usually seen on their mammoth annual migration to the Arctic during which the North American herds might travel for more than 5,000km - an extraordinary feat that takes them further than any other land animals.
