For the past few weeks, people have been queueing up in front of Donut City from as early as 4.30am, with sweet treats flying off the shelves of the bakery located in Seal Beach, California.

And the reason behind customers buying out the store in record time?

It's just so owner John Chhan can close up shop early and spend more time with his wife Stella, who is ill.

The couple has been serving up freshly baked goods to their community for over three decades. Their shop is popular not only for the doughnuts but also for their warm welcomes.

Since 1990, John has been behind the counter with his wife, Stella, by his side. His wife of more than 30 years is now recovering from a brain aneurysm. Her sister stepped in to help but customers immediately missed Stella and because of their affection for the man who makes the confections, the community wanted to help, reports CBS News' John Blackstone.

So when Stella failed to turn up for work one day, concerned customers started to ask Chhan what had happened to her.

She suffered a brain aneurysm on Sept 22 and has been recuperating at a nursing facility. Her husband is only able to visit her in the afternoon after selling all the doughnuts and cleaning up the store.

Chhan told abc13 news in an interview that it has been a difficult period for him and he "felt hurt in his heart". "We work together, we stay together," he said of his wife.

And when the couple's community heard of their situation, they sprang to action.

"Days went by and I just couldn't get it out of my head," said customer Dawn Caviola to the Orange County Register. "So I thought, if enough people would buy a dozen doughnuts every morning, he could close early and go be with his wife."

Caviola decided to reach out to neighbours on the message board Nextdoor and her suggestion received overwhelming responses.

People from the community started to queue in front of the shop early in the morning and bought doughnuts and croissants in the dozens. By 8 am, Chhan had to turn down customers at the shop because the sweet treats were all sold out.

This allowed him to end work before noon and visit his wife earlier, he said.

Other well-meaning customers reached out to Chhan to help him set up an online fundraising page, but it was an offer that he eventually turned down.

For now, the man said he just wants to spend as much time as possible with his wife.

"She can talk, she can write and right now she's trying to start eating something..." he told CBS Local in an interview.

The Chhans are refugees from Cambodia. They became part of the fabric of their community, selling donuts to generation after generation, which is why morning after morning, the donuts are disappearing.

Aspiring gardeners can now lease their own plot from NParks and grow their favourite plants, like edibles.

Amid the backdrop of an increasingly eco-conscious Singapore, the National Parks Board (NParks) will for the first time be leasing out garden space in their parks for anyone to grow their own plants.

These 2.5 sq m plots each cost $57 a year, for up to three years.

Users can grow any plant of their choice.

NParks aims to build 1,000 of these "allotment gardens" in 10 parks by 2019.

This move is part of a broader Edible Horticulture Plan launched yesterday that trains and supports gardeners in Singapore.

In recent years, more community gardens have sprouted islandwide, reflecting a keen interest in gardening beyond the professional sphere.

Gardening enthusiasts said they have observed more aspiring green thumbs as well.

Minister for Social and Family Development Desmond Lee noted that gardens have sprung up not only in residential estates, but also in schools, and even indoors.

And people love the idea of growing their own food, as about 80 per cent of community gardeners under NParks' Community In Bloom (CIB) programme raise edibles in their shared plots, said Mr Lee, who is also Second Minister for National Development.

He was speaking yesterday at the launch of the second Community Garden Festival, which runs until tomorrow at HortPark, off Alexandra Road.

In a pilot allotment scheme last year, 80 allotment plots made available in HortPark were quickly snapped up.

NEW GARDENS
By year-end, new allotment gardens will be available for rent at Punggol, Clementi Woods and Bishan-Ang Mo Kio parks.

Applications can be made during the festival at the Allotment Garden Booth in HortPark.

NParks provides the basics: a raised garden plot at waist level, soil and water. Gardeners simply bring seeds and tools.

Mrs Emily Fong, a retiree in her 60s, enjoys having her own 2.5 sq m space in HortPark, right next to her niece's.

She said: "There is a sense of ownership. It is a bit hard in the shared community gardens to determine what you own."

NParks said there are now over 1,300 community garden groups.

As part of the Edible Horticulture Plan, it aims to enhance training schemes.

The new three-tiered scheme has a basic training level, an advanced level for ornamental plants, edibles and pollinator-attracting plants, and a final CIB ambassador level to groom a new generation of expert gardeners who can train others.

These new initiatives bank on the widespread interest in gardening, and create a community effort to achieve the City in a Garden vision, NParks said.
