More than 400 listings for a new ＄20 note commemorating Singapore's bicentennial appeared on online marketplaces yesterday, a day after it went on sale at banks - and quickly went out of stock at many places.

While many offers of the notes were for marked-up prices of between ＄25 and ＄40, some sellers were asking for as much as ＄1,688 for five notes.

One Carousell re-seller, who did not wish to be named, said she had decided to list a few of the bills for sale as she had many of them.

"If they are not sold, I will save them and give them to friends and family in red packets for special occasions," she said.

Many sellers were offering the notes with the folders they came in and listed the serial numbers of the bills.

A check by The Straits Times found 10 listings for the note on eBay and more than 400 on Carousell.

The ＄20 notes were launched on June 5 by President Halimah Yacob to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Singapore's founding by Sir Stamford Raffles.

The Singapore Mint is putting 5,000 limited edition numismatic sets up for sale. Each set of an uncut sheet of three commemorative notes costs S＄280.
Starting June 10, two million pieces of the commemorative note will be available for public exchange at face value at branches of nine major retail banks in Singapore, namely:

Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation Limited
United Overseas Bank Limited
Bank of China Limited
Citibank Singapore Limited
Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Limited

Two million commemorative notes were made available across nine major retail banks in Singapore from Monday and quickly sold out at many branches.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), which issued the note, had capped the number of notes each person was allowed to exchange at 20 per transaction.

When contacted, an MAS spokesman said that while the law does not prohibit a person from selling the commemorative notes online, "we encourage Singaporeans to collect the notes as keepsakes as they are a one-off issue to commemorate Singapore's Bicentennial".

Meanwhile, the police yesterday advised people to be wary of receiving counterfeit ＄50 and ＄100 Singapore currency notes.

The counterfeit ＄100 notes cases bear the serial number 3AX412083.
Those on the counterfeit ＄50 notes have these eight serial numbers: 0FF875629, 3DL273922, 4DZ985604, 5HS436415, 5LV797440, 5LP297324, 5CK878136 and 5JH230011.
Arrests have been made.

This comes after the police received several reports between March and May of fake portrait-series notes being used at convenience stores, restaurants and retail outlets.

The portrait series is the one currently in circulation. Notes from the series feature a portrait of Singapore's first president, Mr Yusof Ishak.

Three men, aged between 25 and 29, were arrested and charged with the offences between May 25 and June 4.

The counterfeit ＄100 notes in these reported cases bear the serial number 3AX412083.

The fake ＄50 notes have the serial numbers: 0FF875629, 3DL273922, 4DZ985604, 5HS436415, 5LV797440, 5LP297324, 5CK878136 and 5JH230011.

SINGAPORE - The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) will reprint new folders for the SG50 commemorative notes set to correct a typo which misspelled the name of Singapore's first President, Mr Yusof Ishak.

The sets, launched on Thursday, spelled Mr Yusof Ishak's name on the cover fold and enclosed booklet as "Yusok Ishak".

MAS had said that it would print stickers and paste them over the misspelt part of Mr Yusof Ishak's name.

Banks will continue to issue the current folders bearing the stickers until the news ones are ready at a yet-to-be-announced date.

Singaporeans who wish to exchange the folders for the new ones will be able to do so, an MAS spokesman said in a statement on Friday.

The MAS said the reprinting will also serve to replenish the current stock of folders, which are being taken up much faster than expected.

It noted that demand for the notes and folders have been "overwhelming".

Said the spokesman: "MAS would like to reassure the public that there will be enough SG50 notes for all Singaporeans, and there is no need to rush."

A total of 20 million $50 notes, and 15 million of each of the five $10 notes are being printed. Singaporeans will have priority until Sept 30 to get the notes.

"We have also received feedback from the banks that there are customers who queue repeatedly to get more than the stipulated two folders.

A set of six commemorative $50 and $10 notes with designs depicting significant milestones and achievements in Singapore's history was launched yesterday.

The set, issued by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) to mark Singapore's 50th birthday, comprises one $50 note and five $10 polymer notes, and will be available at banks from tomorrow.

This Golden Jubilee year is "a time to reflect on our shared history and sacrifices of our pioneers, to reflect on the values that brought us here and to pledge to preserve and uphold these values", said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the launch of the set of notes at the MAS building in Shenton Way.

The gold $50 note has a transparent panel showing the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore's first Prime Minister, with a raised fist, leading the crowd with a rallying cry of "Merdeka!", which means independence in Malay.

The event marked the achievement of self-government by Singapore in 1959, and was a major milestone to independence in 1965.

The back of the note features the first National Day Parade on Aug 9, 1966, and the latest new town of Punggol.

The note's gold colour reflects the country's Golden Jubilee, MAS said.

The five $10 notes have a common front design and varying back designs reflecting values and aspirations such as multiracialism, meritocracy, peace and stability, strong families and active citizenry.

Like the current series of notes, all the SG50 bills feature a portrait of Singapore's first President Yusof Ishak on the front. But the new notes have security features that are the first of their kind to be used on a currency note, said MAS.

For example, the $50 note has a security stripe featuring the numbers "1965" that switch to "2015" when held at a different angle.

The notes were designed by four local artists and designers - Mr Chua Mia Tee, Mr Eng Siak Loy, Mr Weng Ziyan and Mr Fabian Lim.

The public can get the commemorative notes at the branches of nine major retail banks from tomorrow by exchanging the mat face value.

These banks include DBS Bank/POSB - which will be extending the opening hours of its branches till 8pm on weekdays for the next two weeks - and OCBC Bank, which has employed additional manpower to manage the crowds expected.

Customers of UOB can reserve the notes online and collect the mat a later date.

Each individual will be limited to a quota of five sets of notes. Singaporeans will be given priority to exchange the notes from tomorrow to the end of next month.

They will have to present their identification card at the bank as proof of citizenship. The notes will be available to non-Singaporeans from Oct 1.

Dr Andrew Khoo, deputy managing director of corporate development at MAS, said: "There will be enough SG50 notes available for exchange. There is no need to rush."

A total of 20 million pieces of $50 notes and 75 million pieces of $10 notes - 15 million pieces of each design-will be printed, he said.

The notes complete the set of currencies issued by MAS to mark SG50, which include a set of three commemorative coins that were launched in April.
