American actress and entrepreneur Gwyneth Paltrow, who turns 50 on Tuesday, marked the milestone with a bikini shot – along with a sombre essay about her life so far, and her hopes moving forward.

In the black-and-white photo posted on Instagram last Thursday, Paltrow is seen smiling as she jumps in the air, clad in a bikini.

The post received more than 121,000 likes, with many of the comments responding to the accompanying essay, which was posted as a separate blog due to its length.

Writing on the website of Goop, the lifestyle company she founded in 2008, Paltrow admitted to feeling that “no sense of time (has) passed”.
