Please, I make you a deal, a can of Coke… schoolboy negotiates with monkeys

You may feel a bit concerned or even guilty, but you’re still likely to end up ROTFL (rolling on the floor laughing).

This video, more than anything else, is hilarious.

The unlikely stars are a schoolboy and two monkeys. The macaques are aggressive, the boy is a negotiator.

The incident happened outside a school in Jurong, according to the video on TikTok and Facebook.

It starts with the boy approaching the monkeys, one of which is trying to get at the contents of a bag.

It isn’t clear exactly how they snatched the bag or when it happened.

The other monkey chases the boy away.

He slowly comes back, telling the monkeys in English that he wants his stuff back.

The response, including a screech, can only be taken as emphatically negative.

So he tries another approach, ditching English for “ah-ah eh-eh”.

The boy then returned to negotiate with the monkeys again. This time, the monkey that chased the boy stood guard by putting itself in between the boy and the other monkey ransacking the bag.
The boy then addressed the macaques, while waving both hands signalling he wants peace: "No, no, no, don't open." When that failed, he attempted to speak Monkeyglish: "Ah, ah, eh, eh, eh."

It doesn’t matter whether the monkeys understood that any better than English.

The response is still the same.

At this point, what is possibly the school bell can be heard going off.

The boy, rather desperate by now, switches back to English and makes an offer: Just leave his school work alone and he’ll give them a can of Coke.

Exasperated that his negotiations with the macaques were going nowhere, the boy decided to give up his drink in exchange for everything else.He told the monkeys: "Ok please, I make you a deal. The can of Coke is yours. But I want my bag... Eh, don't don't."
One monkey screeches in response. The boy then said, while backing off: "Okay, okay."

The monkeys are not impressed.

But eventually they seem to lose interest and go up a tree.

A voice can be heard saying: “Take and run, lah.”

The boy picks up the bag, but whether they want it or not, the monkeys seem to consider it theirs by now.

One of them comes down from the tree and gives chase, but this time it looks like the boy gets away.

In the fourth attempt at retrieving his bag, both monkeys suddenly walked away and went up a tree. Their retreat left the boy's belongings unattended.
He then inched forward, but froze, as one of the macaques jumped off the tree and he was unsure if it would attack him. The person filming then egged the boy on: "Go take and run lah."
And when the boy lunged forward to grab his things, one of the macaques sprinted forward, screeched and chased the boy. But this time it looks like the boy gets away.

Is there a lesson here on how to share a city with wildlife? Perhaps the National Parks Board would like to comment.

And think of the possibilities for excuse-seeking schoolkids who don’t have a dog to eat their homework: “The monkeys took my school bag.”

Reactions to the videos were mostly to laugh at how the situation unfolded. The thought of a schoolboy having to negotiate in English with two wild macaques was hilarious to people.
However, there were others who commiserated as they said it was terrifying to have to deal with two potentially aggressive animals and being faced with the prospect of putting up a fight while retrieving one's personal belongings.
Others joked that the schoolboy could tell his teachers that he did not do his homework as monkeys took it.
Still others joked that no one would have believed him if the whole incident was not filmed on TikTok.
