Meditate on the sad news that you often hear about our troubled world.
PHOTO: Meditate on the sad news that you often hear about our troubled world. How does hearing the angel's song of peace affect your response to this news?
The current situation in the world is in the gloomy state. The angels' songs (of the glory of God and His gift of peace) is a much-needed application of the truth of Christmas. The angel’s song brings the message of Christ, the "prince of peace" and the king of the new era which will see the new heaven and earth. The current dark situation of the world now is also seen with the eschatological hope in Christ. (relating to death, judgement, and the final destiny of the soul and of humankind).

Christ, the Prince of Peace, and a statement of the biblical fact that with His incarnation, He has become familiar with the sorry state of affairs in our weary world. In Him, God has come close to us as we suffer. He is truly Immanuel, God with us. We are reminded in Scripture that "he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people" (Hebrews 2:17). We might had once been plagued with despair, but now look forward to the promised joy and real rest for eternity.

The message of peace emphasised by the angels' song gives us hope amidst the war and disturbance on earth. Moreover this message is from "heaven's all-gracious King" a reference to God. Our response should cease hearing only the troubling noise, and hear the message from heaven that needs to be heard.

Conflict and misunderstanding, dominates events in our world. Earth is weary, but heaven is still open - therein is our hope. The good news is that of a new age when wars will cease and sin will be no more. As foretold by prophets, a new age will dawn and peace will finally come to earth, exactly what the angels have been singing about all these years. We can then learn to sing with the angels, glorifying God and experiencing the peace that has been promised in Christ. And finally, the world will echo the song of the angels which has so far been ignored by most people in this troubled world.

Why is it necessary to trust in Jesus, the Prince of Peace, and believe that He will bring about the peace that troubled human hearts and society so desperately need?
Christ is the Prince of Peace, on whom we can cast all our burdens and find His rest and peace (1 Peter 5:7). He cares for us, and we are urged to invite Him into our "longing hearts" so that He would live there to help us in our "daily toil". We can then learn to sing with the angels, glorifying God and experiencing the peace that has been promised in Christ.

This promise will only be fulfilled by Christ, the Prince of Peace. There will be no peace without Him, and no hope outside of Him. That why it is necessary to trust in Jesus, and believe that He will bring about the peace that troubled human hearts and society so desperately need.

Read John 14:27 and say a prayer to Jesus.
"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." (John 14:27).

Jesus speaks from the depths of his heart to his dearest friends. He is facing into his Passion. He wants his friends to know that he is with them, his father is with them. Jesus’ farewell wish is ‘Peace!’ His gift of peace is not a state, but a relationship. It is the fruit of deeply abiding in him. This relationship will never fail. It will enable the disciples to endure suffering and rejection.

The peace that Jesus gives is available to me; I have to do nothing to receive it. But maybe that’s the problem – I want to do something to earn what Jesus offers as a free gift.

This is a certain peace and joy that comes from knowing and loving God directly, that nothing else can give. The peace that surpasses all understanding - a peace the world cannot give on its own.

It Came Upon the Midnight Clear,
That glorious song of old,
From angels bending near the earth
To touch their harps of gold;
"Peace on the earth, good will to men
From heaven's all-gracious King" -
The world in solemn stillness lay
To hear the angels sing.

Still through the cloven skies they come
With peaceful wings unfurled,
And still their heavenly music floats
O'er all the weary world;
Above its sad and lowly plains
They bend on hovering wing.
And ever o'er its Babel-sounds
The blessed angels sing.

Yet with the woes of sin and strife
The world has suffered long;
Beneath the angel-strain have rolled
Two thousand years of wrong;
And man, at war with man, hears not
The love song which they bring; -
O hush the noise, ye men of strife,
And hear the angels sings!

And ye beneath life's crushing load,
Whose forms are bending low,
Who toil along the climbing way
With painful steps and slow,
Look now! for glad and golden hours
Come swiftly on the wing; -
Oh, rest beside the weary road
And hear the angels sing!

For lo! the days are hastening on
By prophet bards foretold,
When, with the ever circling years
Shall come the age of gold;
When Peace shall over all the earth,
Its ancient splendors fling,
And the whole world give back the song,
Which now the angels sing.

History of the Carol [1]

This rather melancholic but hopeful song was written in 1849 by American pastor Edmund Hamilton Sears (1810-1876). A direct descendant of one of the pilgrims who landed at Plymouth in 1630, Sears was educated at Harvard Divinity School, after which he served a number of Unitarian congregations, including the Greater Boston Unitarian congregation in Wayland. Unitarians do not subscribe to the historical Christian doctrine of the Trinity. They accept the moral authority but not the divinity of Jesus. They reject the Christian doctrine of original sin (that we all suffer from human depravity and are unable to save ourselves) and, therefore, merely emphasise moral living following the example of Christ, without the standard doctrines of predestination and salvation.

Though serving in a Unitarian denomination, Sears revealed that he held to the truth of the divinity of Christ. He wrote in his book Sermons and Songs of the Christian Life (1875), "Although I was educated in the Unitarian denomination, I believe and preach the Divinity of Christ."

Sears wrote several books, the most well-known of which was The Fourth Gospel; The Heart of Christ, published in 1872. In his sermons he condemned slavery and laws that supported it; when human and divine laws clash, he urged that the latter be followed.

After seven years of active pastoral ministry, Sears had a nervous breakdown (today, we would say that he had a burnout experience), and returned to Wayland to serve as a part-time preacher. It was while doing this that he wrote "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear". The breaking news in those days had to do with the war between America and Mexico and revolution in Europe. It was a depressing situation for a depressed poet, who saw the world as a dark place of conflict and war. He wrote this hymn to proclaim the Christian message that the world so badly needed to hear.

The hymn was published in the Christian Register in 1849. A melody for the hymn was written the following year, in 1850, by composer Richard Storrs Willis (1819-1900) and published in his Church Chorals and Choir Studies (No. 23). Willis, who is said to have trained under Felix Mendelssohn, referred to his melody as a "Carol", and it is Willis's tune that became popular in America. In 1874, celebrated English composer Arthur Seymour Sullivan (1842-1900) wrote an alternate melody, "Noel", which is the popular tune in Britain.

Biblical Insights from the Carol [1]
The hymn has a sad note as it focuses in the gloomy state of the world. The songs of the angels that appeared in Bethlehem are set more generally in the context of this troubled world. There is no mention of Bethlehem, the shepherds, the magi, the guiding star, Joseph and Mary, and even of the child who was born on Christmas.

The question is whether this carol expresses Unitarian theology. If so, why is it included in the United Methodist Hymnal, the Lutheran Book of Worship, and other major hymnals? The reason is that the carol applies the Christmas message to the current situation in the world and urges people to listen to the angels' songs (of the glory of God and His gift of peace). This is a much-needed application of the truth of Christmas.

To make it clear that the angels were singing about the birth of Christ, some amendments were made. The fifth stanza was changed to the following by Rev. Edward Henry Bickersteth, and Anglican clegryman who became a bishop in 1885, in his Hymnal Companion to the Book of Common Prayer (1870);

For lo! The days are hastening on,
By prophets seen of old
When with the ever circling years,
Shall come the time foretold
When the new heaven and earth shall own
The prince of peace their King
And the whole world send back the song
Which now the angels sing.

The major change is the clearer reference to Christ, the "prince of peace" (Stanza 4; see Isaiah 9:6) and the king of the new era which will see the new heaven and earth. Not only is Christ referred to, but the current dark situation of the world is also seen with the eschatological hope in Christ.

An alternate fourth stanza was provided in Church Hymns (1874);

O Prince of Peace, thou knowest well
This weary world below;
Thou seest how men climb the way
With painful steps and slow,
O still the jarring sounds of earth
That round the pathway ring;
And bid the toilers rest awhile,
To hear the angels sing.

The improvement was, again, a clearer reference to Christ, the Prince of Peace, and a statement of the biblical fact that with His incarnation, He has become familiar with the sorry state of affairs in our weary world.

Another alternative fifth stanza is provided in The Westminster Carol Nook (1899), edited by Rev. Edgar Pettman, and English organist and choral conductor.

O Prince of Peace, on Whom we Cast
Our every cross and care,
Come enter Thou our longing hearts,
And make Thy dwelling there;
And may we 'mid our daily toil
To Thee our praises bring,
Until on high we learn the song
That now the angels sing,

Here too, Christ is the Prince of Peace, on whom we can cast all our burdens and find His rest and peace (1 Peter 5:7). He cares for us, and we are urged to invite Him into our "longing hearts" so that He would live there to help us in our "daily toil". We can then learn to sing with the angels, glorifying God and experiencing the peace that has been promised in Christ. All the above alternative lyrics help to focus more clearly on Christ and how we can find our peace in Him.

Both the United Methodist Hymnal and the Lutheran Book of Worship drop the fourth verse, but retain the others in their original forms. If we remember the helpful amendments above, we can still sing the carol faithfully and meaningfully. We will reflect briefly on the original stanzas, four of which are normally sung in churches today.

The first stanza recalls the choir of angels that appeared to the shepherds. The phrase "harps of gold" is poetic licence, since Scripture does not mention these. The first part of the angels' song is also not mentioned ("Glory to God in the highest"), but the message of peace is emphasised because of the central theme of war and disturbance on earth. The message is from "heaven's all-gracious King" (Stanza1), a reference to God. And the ideal image is given - of a world silently (and carefully) listening to what the angels sang.

https://veryfatoldman.blogspot.com/2019/08/reflection-angels-from-realms-of-glory.html

The second stanza moves sadly to the current situation. The ancient message of the angels can still be heard, though it is not clear whether it has been heeded. Unlike Stanza 1, the world is not in "solemn stillness" to hear the angels. Instead the cacophony of "Babel-sounds" (Stanza 2), of conflict and misunderstanding, dominates events in our world. But the angels still sing, if only we would care to listen. Earth is weary, but heaven is still open - therein is our hope, Stanza 3 laments the long suffering the world has seen because of human "sin and strife". While the angels have been singing their message, 2,000 years have gone by, marked by war and violence, in contrast to the "love song" (Stanza 3) of the angels. Humankind is told to cease our troubled and troubling noise, keep silent, and "hear the angels sing!"

Stanza 4 offers hope for the weary, who are burdened with "life's crushing load". The image is of exhausted people painfully climbing up and making slow progress. They are also told to rest to hear the angels sing. There is a message from heaven that needs to be heard.

In the final stanza, the good news is that of a new age when wars will cease and sin will be no more. As foretold by prophets, a new age will dawn and peace will finally come to earth, exactly what the angels have been singing about all these years. The phrase "age of gold" has brought some opposition from those who think it looks back to a golden age (a pagan concept). If so, the alternative verses mentioned above may clear up all doubt. And finally, the world will echo the song of the angels which has so far been ignored by most people in this troubled world. We know that this promise will only be fulfilled by Christ, the Prince of Peace. There will be no peace without Him, and no hope outside of Him.

Meditate on the sad news that you often hear about our troubled world. How does hearing the angel's song of peace affect your response to this news? Why is it necessary to trust in Jesus, the Prince of Peace, and believe that He will bring about the peace that troubled human hearts and society so desperately need? Read John 14:27 and say a prayer to Jesus.

Dear Lord, help me to do nothing in this time of prayer but to be ready to receive what you offer.
Dear Lord, help me to do nothing in this time of prayer but to be ready to receive what you offer.
PHOTO: "Dear Lord, help me to do nothing in this time of prayer but to be ready to receive what you offer. I thank you Lord for your being, and the miracle of your presence in my life.

Lord, I need your gift of peace! So often I find myself unsure, anxious, worried, and angry. Talk to me about how we coped when things were out of control in our life, especially at the end. Help me always to rise from prayer with renewed trust in you as I face the things you want done. May I always act out of love.

Shape us to be instruments of your peace in a divided world. As I emerge from prayer each day, may I be more peace-filled than when I began.

I may not recognise the peace that Jesus gives immediately; it is not like the peace that the world gives and a troubled or fearful heart may miss the blessing. The peace that Jesus promises is not an escape from trouble - but rather the courage to face it calmly. I take some time to dive deeper, beneath the surface concerns of my life, to acknowledge the peace about which Jesus speaks.

Lord, that is the peace I seek: to be able to face sorrow and pain without the overwhelming fear that all is lost.

Through Lord Jesus Christ we pray. Amen!
"
