The Japanese carnival invites skilled samba dance teams from all over the country and from the dance’s homeland in Brazil to compete for coveted prizes.

The competition is usually broken into three tiers of dancers classified by skill level and commitment to the highly technical art of samba. Teams often pick a pop culture theme for their dances and costume pieces.

The gorgeously decorated team costumes are put on display during the Asakusa Samba Carnival’s annual fancy costume parade, where onlookers can take in the awe-inspiring glittery headdresses, swooshing skirts, and flirty feathers.

The Asakusa Samba Carnival is one of the region’s youngest festivals. Though Asakusa celebrates many of Japan’s traditional festivals, the Samba Carnival is unique to the city.

The Asakusa Samba Carnival began in 1981 when the mayor invited an award-winning samba team from Brazil to put on a display for the people of Asakusa. The dance trend quickly caught on and samba became a part of Asakusa’s rich tradition.

The city is full of tributes to Brazilian culture and customs, including several of Japan’s most popular samba schools.

A prominent dance team to look for is the G.R.E.S. Bárbaros. Bárbaros is one of Japan’s largest teams competing at the Asakusa Samba Festival. The school sends 200 dancers, 80 bateria (percussionists) and several cantores (singers) to the Japanese carnival every year. They’ve won the festival’s top prize a record-breaking sixteen times. Try to find the school’s blue and white colours amongst the Asakusa Samba Festival’s 3,500 competitors!

There’s also an abundance of things to do in Asakusa. The region is home to the Sensō-ji, an architecturally stunning Buddhist temple.

Next door you’ll find the Hanayashiki, Japan’s oldest and most-loved amusement park. If you’re not into rides, Hanayashiki often shows classic black-and-white Japanese films for less daring visitors.

When to Go to Asakusa Samba Carnival
The Asakusa Samba Carnival is held on a Saturday in August, usually later in the month. This is considered the best time of year to visit Japan and Asakusa because the weather is warm and all of the region's popular tourist attractions are fully open for business. Be sure to book your hotel in Asakusa in advance to secure prime locations.

Odds n' Ends
Admission to the Carnival is free, but the weather and the large crowd of spectators can heat up the area quickly. Be sure to pack a bottle of water and sunscreen before you leave your hotel. Also, be aware that the Asakusa Samba Carnival is as much a celebration of music as it is dance, so bring earplugs if you have very sensitive hearing.
