The largest samba carnival in Japan is a perfect finale to summer in Asakusa. The event attracts authentic samba dance teams from across Japan. The highlight of the carnival is the colorful, gorgeous costumes—along with the beautiful dancers who wear them.

Asakusa Samba Carnival (The Last Festival of Summer)

While some of Tokyo's largest festivals were cancelled last year out of respect for victims of the March 11 disaster, the Asakusa Samba Carnival fell afoul of a timetable clash with the rescheduled Sumida River Fireworks. There'll be no such problems this year: weather permitting, on the afternoon of August 31st, the parade between Sensoji Temple and Tawaramachi Station will be flooded with teams of elaborately attired dancers, shaking their tail feathers to the Brazilian beat.

Asakusa Samba Carnival summer festival, Tokyo

First held in 1981 in an attempt to revitalise the neighbourhood, the carnival is now one of Tokyo's more popular summer events, drawing half a million spectators. Seeing that this is the first time in a while that it hasn't clashed with rival dance festivals like the Koenji Awaodori (http://www.timeout.jp/en/tokyo/event/8712/Koenji-Awaodori-2013) and Super Yosakoi (http://www.timeout.jp/en/tokyo/event/8763/Super-Yosakoi-2013), you can expect an even fuller turnout than usual in 2013.

Asakusa's Samba Carnival goes back 30 years and has grown in popularity over the years becoming the largest samba carnival outside of Brazil. As usual sexiness and oddity prevail from sexy sword-swinging gladiator women to walking manga.
