The Preservation of Monuments Board (PMB) is gazetting the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station (TPRS) as a national monument, while the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) is gazetting the Bukit Timah Railway Station (BTRS) as a conserved building.
This, in view of "their deep historical significance, and to protect physical reminders of our rich heritage", according to a joint statement from the PMB and URA released on Friday.

In May last year, the Prime Ministers of Singapore and Malaysia had announced that the Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) station would be relocated from Tanjong Pagar to the Woodlands Train Checkpoint (WTCP) by July this year.
In September last year, Singapore and Malaysia agreed to a land swap deal, where the land vacated by the relocation of the railway would be exchanged for six parcels of land in the Marina South and Ophir-Rochor area.
The KTMB railway has been the only means of locomotive transportation between the two countries for nearly 80 years and would continue to reflect the ties between both countries, said Ms Jean Wee, director of the PMB.

While the Economic Strategies Committee had highlighted Tanjong Pagar as the next waterfront "city" given the neighbourhood's prime location, the Singapore Heritage Society is urging the Government to impose strict controls to maintain the positive qualities of the TPRS site, such as height controls and view corridors to ensure the station is not blocked and overshadowed.
"The TPRS site is now badly compromised by the close proximity of the Keppel viaduct, which blocks views to and from the station, impinges on the station's scale and dignity, and is a source of added noise and air pollution," the society said, adding the viaduct could be removed if the port area is redeveloped for residential, commercial and recreational use.
The Nature Society added that the related lands, both along the main Bukit Timah corridor, as well as the Jurong branch line, could be preserved as nature corridors and possibly incorporated into the successful park connector network, as these green areas benefit the surrounding residential areas in terms of views and cooling effects, the society said.
Detailed plans for the use of the railway land will be worked out by the URA and relevant agencies, URA and PMB spokespersons told MediaCorp.
