THE "H" in Taiwanese pop trio S.H.E. has decided to do her own thing with this solo release.

Oh, don't worry, S.H.E. aren't breaking up (or so they say). Still, with Ella doing those dramas and Selina doing, whatever she does when she's not doing S.H.E, it was only natural that Hebe would come up with work as far removed from anything S.H.E has ever done.

The 11-track album features songs about love, but it's to Hebe's credit that she manages to deliver a great vocal on songs that traverse genres (class or category) - from the folkie album opener Love?, to the pop of To Hebe, to the jazzy rock of I Think I won't Love You.

The French have a phrase that others have borrowed to describe an inability to describe why they cannot explain why they like or dislike something, but really, there's a certain je ne sais quoi about this album that just gets to you. In a good way. Maybe it's the melodies, maybe it's in the way that she sings them - you cannot help but get into her groove. (Seriously, it's still on my playlist.)

But wait, that's not all! There's the bonus concert DVD. Not only does she sing in English at the gig, it begins with what is quite possibly the most incongruous start for a pop album ever - the Christian hymn Change My Heart Oh God. Plus, her rendition of Christina Aguilera's Save Me From Myself is actually refreshing.

A great debut from Hebe. May she go solo a lot more often.

PHOTO: Tien Fu-chen, more commonly known as Hebe, is a Taiwanese singer, actress and host, notable as a member of the Taiwanese pop girl group S.H.E. Hebe Tien was encouraged to participate in the show ‘Cruel Stage’ by its workers.

During the first round, her voice started breaking while singing ‘Return Home’. Hebe decided to sing a song with a lower key in the final round. However, because she was unfamiliar with that song, which happens to be Singaporean singer Kit Chan’s “Loving You” or “Xi Huan Ni” (喜歡你), she forgot about ten seconds worth of lyrics in the finals, messing up her performance. Nonetheless, the manager appreciated her straight personality and powerful vocals.

Therefore, Hebe became part of S.H.E, and along with Selina Ren and Ella Chen, were signed under the Taiwanese record label HIM International Music.
