Inuka the Singaporean Polar Bear passed away peacefully on 25 April 2018.
The Singapore Zoo bade farewell to Inuka the polar bear on Wednesday morning (April 25), following a decision to put him down humanely. It will be lovingly remembered for being the first polar bear to be born in the tropics.

Of all the many animals that Mr Mohan Ponichamy has cared for, Inuka was by far the most famous and loved by Singaporeans, said the Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) deputy head keeper.

"For the first time... We didn't walk into the den this morning to see a cheery Inuka greeting us. The space was empty," he said.

He was speaking at a private tribute ceremony for Inuka yesterday at the Singapore Zoo, where more than 400 zoo workers and guests paid their last respects to the first and only polar bear born in Singapore.

The Frozen Tundra at the zoo was packed with guests, many donning blue or white - a nod to the symbolic colours of Inuka and its enclosure.

Commemorative light blue ribbons were also passed around and worn by staff and guests, after a box of the ribbons was left at Inuka's enclosure by an anonymous visitor yesterday morning.

Inuka, 27, born here in 1990, was the first polar bear to be born in the tropics.

Conservationists and animal rights activists have campaigned against the presence of polar bears in Singapore since their introduction to the national zoo in 1978.
Following animal welfare discussions, the zoo announced in 2006 that it would not bring in any more polar bears after Inuka.

It was put down humanely on Wednesday after a medical check that day showed little improvement in his failing health.

Inuka, which would have been well into its 70s in human years, had been suffering from age-related ailments such as arthritis, dental issues and occasional ear infections for the past five years.

In a speech, Mr Mike Barclay, group chief executive of Mandai Park Holdings, thanked Inuka's dedicated keepers for their care of the bear.

"Inuka's end came in the most humane way possible, with his keepers, both past and present, in attendance," he said.

The ceremony began with Inuka's keepers going forward to put up pictures of the polar bear over the years to mark milestones such as birthdays.

White roses were placed in front of each framed photograph by representatives from WRS and Singapore Press Holdings Foundation, which has supported Inuka since its birth, as well as Inuka's care team.

Finally, a minute of applause was held as a tribute to the bear.

The zoo has also set up a memorial wall at the Frozen Tundra, where members of the public can pen tributes and bid farewell to Inuka. The memorial will be up till May 5.

In his tribute, Mr Ponichamy spoke of how fun-loving and "kaypoh" (nosy) Inuka was, much like Singaporeans.

Inuka, whose name means 'Silent Stalker' in Inuit, had reached the grand old age of 27 - into his 70s in human years and two years older than the average lifespan of the creatures in captivity.
His weakened limbs had trouble supporting his body and he developed cuts on his paws and a wound on his abdomen

SINGAPORE will soon have a wildlife and nature attraction in Mandai, complete with eco-lodges and a rainforest-themed park where visitors can get up close to wildlife.

When the Mandai nature precinct is complete by 2023, two new wildlife parks - the Rainforest Park and the Bird Park - will join the existing trio: the Singapore Zoo, the River Safari and the Night Safari.

Sleeping under the stars could be an option for those who want to spend a night or two in Mandai, as accommodation options such as tents, suites and family rooms are being considered.

The 126ha Mandai hub sits just outside the Central Catchment Nature Reserve and borders Upper Seletar Reservoir.

The plans to turn the area into a nature precinct were announced yesterday by developer Mandai Safari Park, and were welcomed by tourism experts who said they could help Singapore jump on the fast-growing nature tourism bandwagon.

The Bird Park, which will be relocated from Jurong, will occupy 17ha and open as early as 2020. Birds will fly freely in nine "upsized" aviaries, each featuring a unique landscape such as wetlands and bamboo forests. Mike Barclay, group chief executive of Mandai Safari Park, said at the press conference yesterday: "We may be surrounded by the forests while in the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, but many people may not get a chance to encounter wildlife there. Now, they'll be able to do so here."

The Mandai precinct is being designed to be in harmony with nature. The two new wildlife parks will be developed on previously occupied land and measures will be taken to minimise impact on the flora and fauna in the area.

MSPH has invited members of the public to share the photos they took at Singapore Zoo, Night Safari and River Safari, as well as the Jurong Bird Park, in the lead-up to a proposed revamp of the Mandai nature precinct.

On 14 January 2015, the Singapore Government announced its intention to work with Temasek to rejuvenate the Mandai nature and wildlife precinct.

Plans for the Mandai makeover were first announced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in September 2014. The first phase of its development, which could start as early as later this year, costs $1 billion. It will cover the construction of the two new parks.

Michael Chiam, Ngee Ann Polytechnic's senior tourism lecturer, said: "More Singapore residents are getting away from their concrete jungle environment into nature and wilderness, to relax and be rejuvenated. This hub has great potential to attract them."


In response to public feedback, the current eco-accommodation will be expanded to allow nature enthusiasts and families to extend their stay in Mandai.

MSPH is also exploring a range of options with the Government to improve accessibility to Mandai. These include introducing shuttle buses from the upcoming Springleaf MRT station and direct bus services from regions that are not well-connected to Mandai.

Housewife Foo Kailing, 34, liked the idea of having public access spaces.

The mother of two children, aged six and eight, said: "I've only taken my children to the zoo once. With more open spaces that are free, there are more reasons to go back."

Sleeping under the stars could be an option for those who want to spend a night or two in Mandai, as accommodation options such as tents, suites and family rooms are being considered.
