I'm a very visual person and not vulnerable to sweet talk and flattery in general.

However, when a guy I've just started dating says certain things, on a subconscious level, I feel myself falling for him (despite myself) and putting up with his many flaws.

I admit that I get lulled by the promise of the kind of man he is, by the things he says. I'm going to share what they are, although it exposes the frailty (physical or moral weakness) of our feminine nature. Because when they're delivered with honesty and the best of intentions, it can clarify both your values and goals at the start of the relationship.

And these are really simple things that many guys don't realise have such an effect on women. You just need to say them regularly.

For starters, women love being complimented with sincerity. When he says, "You're so beautiful", what stops my instinct from going, "Oh, he says that to all the women", is when he follows up with specific details like, "That dress makes your waist look small", "Your hair looks so nice, did you do something different today?" or "Your skin is glowing".

That implies that he's looking at me attentively, instead of glossing over me and making the obligatory "hmm, that's nice" remark. And that he appreciates the finer details about me - it's about making us feel unique.

And please don't perve at specific body parts, like, "Wah, your boobs look damn big." You can compliment us on how sexy our legs or our curves are but, remember, some verbal finesse goes a long way.

It's also complimenting us on our achievements too. "You're a smart woman" and "You're really good at what you do", expressed with admiration and not intimidation, shows us you're a confident man and you want us to do well. You appreciate not only the effort we make to look nice but our intelligence, skills and talents.

Also, when you simply say, "How was your day?" or "How are things with your difficult boss/colleague/sister?", we feel that you truly care about our emotional well-being too and that you remember the things that troubled us. Feeling that you want to listen and be involved in our internal turmoil means you really want us to be happy. A woman who is assured that he would like to make her happy, is indeed a happy one.

http://cloudofchaos.com/category/fashion/page/2/

Also, when he says "You make me feel so relaxed" (if he's usually stressed by work or family); "You make me feel so inspired" (if he's going through a bleak time); or "You make me want to be a better man" (this is the clincher for any time). To know that I have such a profound and positive impact on your well-being warms the cockles of my heart. You've acknowledged that the effect I have on you goes beyond the physical level.

Therefore, I now want to open my heart to giving you more positivity.

http://wildflower05.wordpress.com/page/5/

Verbalising a future commitment is powerful too. Like, "What are you doing on New Year's Eve? Want to count down together?" or "Would you like to go to my friend's Christmas party?" I like the reassurance that you see me in your near future, especially if you want to book me for your special occasions.

An even better clincher is to look fondly at other people's kids and proclaim that you like kids or you're good with kids. It's not that we want to procreate with you immediately but we like to know that the man is not going to run screaming at the thought of being surrounded by children. It signals to us that he likes the family vibe, is looking to settle down and does not have commitment phobia.

Hydration where you least expect it.jpg

Then there are some phrases that men think will seal the deal, but we're the fairer and smarter breed, so we can sniff out the lies.

We're suspicious of things like, "You're the prettiest among all your friends/sisters/colleagues." If any of the women is clearly a stunner, then this has to be handled with more skill, like, "Some guys might think Wendy is a looker but she's not my type at all. You definitely are."

http://photobucket.com/images/whisper%20sweet%20somethings

Please don't ever gawk that, "Wah, your friend Wendy is damn hot." Ever.

"I won't ever cheat on you" is another lie. Unless you continue that with, "I'll fall in love with another girl in five years' time and she'll call you Mummy". Now that's super smooth and that will so seal the deal.

PHOTO: Love is ...
I lean forward and whisper in his ear. The music sounds so distant now: “I miss you…” We look at each other and there’s a little tumble in my stomach… the butterflies are dancing again in my heart. I wish I could smile.

The dizziness makes me out of balance, so the kiss happens before I am aware of it. We’re in love.

Many years from now, I know I will look back and remember this moment. The world was forgotten. Bodies were stripped of consciousness, time stopped and the clichés ensued all at once. There is only you and I, my love.

There are no promises, this is no young love. We are both frightened, although we won’t say it… words can be daggers sometimes… I look down and you are holding my hand and it feels right. This is our forever and ever, my sweet.

Not-so-sweet smell of success

When a woman receives overwhelming recognition or fame, it's often harder for the man to accept it joyfully

I've always striven to be successful in whatever I do. Sadly, it doesn't happen every time but when it finally does, the applause and acknowledgement is satisfying and the monetary rewards can be rather pleasant as well.

However, I've observed how public approval affects friendships and relationships. Siblings, relatives and friends can get jealously envious of well-off peers, and expect favours and handouts. If none is forthcoming, snide remarks and bitter aspersions will be cast on your character to anyone who would listen.

Often there are altercations when a woman becomes more accomplished than her man. Tension builds, arguments increase and, often, cheating starts.

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony seemed to be happily married for the last seven years, working together and spawning a pair of adorable twins. Then she became an American Idol judge, was crowned the most beautiful woman in the world, scored a No 1 hit song and considered the hottest revival in entertainment.

Suddenly, they announced that they were getting divorced. A variety of rumours have sprung up about their marital problems but it's so coincidental that they broke up during the throes of her immense popularity.

Hilary Swank's marriage to Chad Lowe lasted through her first Oscar win (even though she forgot to thank him in her acceptance speech). But when she won an Oscar a few years later, he left her within months (despite the fact she thanked him profusely this time). She wanted to reconcile, he didn't.

Of course I don't know why they all split up but when a woman receives overwhelming recognition or fame, it's often harder for the man to accept it joyfully, especially when they are in the same industry.

Blame the genetically-programmed competitive streak in every guy, or maybe it's the traditional gender values that dictate that men must be the breadwinner while women gain prestige from the success of her man. It's seldom the other way round.

I've seen women brag about their husband's triumphs and peer smugly down at their hapless girlfriend whose husbands are less qualified.

There are only a few areas where a woman can shine more than men. One is in the physical endowment department. No guy would complain if his girlfriend was attractive (unless he was crazy possessive and didn't want other men to look at her).

He would never feel threatened if she was an amazing cook (unless he was a chef) or really, really good at washing dishes or was extraordinary at ironing clothes. But if she's a better driver, earns more and gets more job promotions, it usually doesn't augur well for the relationship.

Women don't have ceilings and obstacles like before. There are many chances to express our talents and aim for ultimate validation in the workplace. And most of us want to. Despite also having to juggle motherhood, we sometimes face the dilemma of striving to achieve our best, and yet curb our ambition to maintain harmony at home.

I know so many creative, capable and brilliant girlfriends who are admired in their professions. However, guys are scared of them and don't even want to get to know the amazingly caring woman they are as well.

It doesn't matter what stage we are at in life, whether we are rich, famous, intelligent, broke, unemployed or powerless. We're just asking to be loved and accepted without having to downplay or compromise ourselves.

I delight in the piquant pleasure and precariousness of a new date. But after the fraternising has gone on for three months, surely it's time for The Talk that starts with: "So ... what are we?"

It's best to clarify that you both have the same objectives. Otherwise, the one who harboured higher expectations and emotions will get hurt and disappointed.

I've always thought that if you're dining regularly, confiding problems, then kissing and groping along with it, you're dating right? In fact, that's already a relationship, no?

PHOTO: The Beginning of After by Jennifer Castle - testament to how drastically life can change in the span of a single moment.

Well, no, according to my male friends.

Kissing and groping doesn't mean you're dating exclusively as he could be kissing and groping other women too. And generally, he doesn't want to know if you're seeing other men, either. Only if he has emotional attachment to you will he want to know if there are other rivals.

If she doesn't mind that you're seeing other women, then it means that she's also enjoying her own buffet of men. Or, she really likes you and is willing to wait for you to come to your senses and realise that she's the only One that you'll ever need.

Also, many guys say that seeing each other for six months is sometimes still regarded as open season (meaning, they can date other women too). However, if you've been kissing and groping for two years, and can't pin him down for The Talk, then perhaps you should date someone else who doesn't have commitment phobia.

I'm told a guy would only initiate The Talk if he feels chemistry and he's comfortable with you. Or if there's no one else available, and he wants more than the occasional cuddle.

However, most women are inclined towards developing a steady relationship. My friend Edwin thinks we froth ourselves up and are ready to take the plunge into the relationship even before assessing the situation properly.

To know "What are we?" we first must know "Where is he?" from an emotional standpoint.

http://www.destructoid.com/e3-10-pirates-of-the-caribbean-armada-of-the-damned-176490.phtml

So he's always initiating the next date. He talks about doing stuff together in the future. Not buying a flat or how many kids you want - but stuff like a concert or a new restaurant to experience together.

He's extending himself to do nice things, like acquiring the rare hard cover book you've been searching for for five years.

All that indicates that he likes you, and wants to impress you. But it doesn't mean that he is ready for a relationship.

He could be considering an exclusive relationship if he introduces you to his colleagues. Watch them closely.

If they raise their eyebrows and go "Ah" when they meet you, it means he's been telling them about you. But if they go "Ah" and then start to grope (reach about uncertainly) you, just extricate yourself and leave. He's been telling them about you all right, but not the way you'd like.

PHOTO: Breathing Underwater by Julia Green - Life and love - are still vibrantly in the air. A perfect coming of age for any young girl just tipping into teenhood.

If he invites you to his company D&D, then that's big. He thinks your net worth will increase his status in the eyes of his colleagues. That is in the public realm. He won't showcase any random woman, and wouldn't want his colleagues to think he's a player as that's a reflection of his ethics and integrity that could affect his professional image.

The private realm of his close friends is harder to discern. He could simply be showing off to his buddies who will nudge and wink at him for scoring. Among guys, it's like bringing home the kill. Thump chest. Me did good.

PHOTO: If you invite him to meet your close friends and he makes excuses not to, then he isn't ready.
http://api.ning.com/files/THmbiHAbJ0Qkc302npdIwBdWtQpFAD4ttEDM7jaOxHENZUBpW35jFH1MIwIR*BdTAPR1ckwp3y*oUJvE8BWhpVKMeLHgMTnybqp2LJ0F*bY_/underground.jpg
http://thetwilightsaga.com/

On the other hand, he could be planning to take the relationship further and needs his friend's opinion. They're all sussing you out, so you better be on your best behaviour. No getting drunk, crying about the ex, or jumping into the swimming pool fully clothed or worse, naked.

However, if you invite him to meet your close friends and he makes excuses not to, then he isn't ready. Maybe he only wants you for your body, he just isn't that into you, or he isn't ready for the next step.

Back off graciously. Hysterical tears won't make him more ready.

My friend Peter dates a lot of women who try to tie him down. He often tells them to "Just enjoy it for what it is, let it flow. You never know what's going to happen."

PHOTO: "You bitch! what the hell is wrong with you?" Those are the last words he said beforeI walked out.

But most women hear, "I really like you. I'll change for you. You're the only one for me."

So please clean your ears, be objective, and don't rush it because these "unready" guys will run for the hills, or run into another woman's arms.

Just relish getting to know him, and don't allow the impatience of "are we there yet?" ruin what could be a beautiful friendship for life.
