LONDON - Pop icon Madonna claimed she was left with whiplash following her on-stage tumble at the Brit Awards and said that she will not be wearing the offending Armani cape at future shows.

Appearing on British channel ITV's Jonathan Ross show, the 56-year-old explained: "I didn't hurt my butt, I hurt my head. I know how to fall, I've fallen off my horse many times. I tucked and I have good core strength.

"But the thing is, I had a little bit of a whiplash and I smacked the back of my head. So there was a man standing over me with a flashlight until about 3am making sure I was still compos mentis (having full control of one's mind)," she added, according to extracts released on Friday, using the phrase indicating someone is of sound mind.

"Madge" blamed the embarrassing spill at Wednesday's award ceremony in London on having to change her performance between rehearsal and showtime, which meant her extravagant cape had to be tied more tightly around her neck.

"So here I am marching in like the Queen and I got to the top of the stairs and I pulled my silky string and it did not come undone," she said.

"My two lovely Japanese dancers basically strangled me off the stage. I had a choice - I could either be strangled or fall with the cape, and I fell."

Surrounded by muscular dancers wearing bondage-style costumes and horns on their heads, she quickly picked herself up and continued singing "Living For Love", ironically peppered with lines like "I'm not giving up, I'm gonna carry on" and "Lifted me up, and watched me stumble".

"I'm never writing lyrics like that again!," she joked.

Despite her dignified recovery, Madonna refused to watch a re-run of the incident.

When discussing her future performances, the "Material Girl" singer said that "cape fear is over", and that she was dumping the floor-sweeping garment.

"I rehearse and I rehearse and I rehearse so that when I do the show, it's effortless and I create magic and I did the opposite. I actually created a horror show for everyone," she said.

The Madonna Special will air on March 14.

SYDNEY
A LONE gunman kept terrified staff and customers captive in a downtown Sydney cafe last night, brandishing an Islamic flag, as five of his hostages managed to flee for their lives.

Police, including paramilitary officers, cordoned off several blocks around the Lindt chocolate cafe as negotiators tried to defuse one of the biggest security scares in Australia in decades.

Snipers and a Swat team took up positions around the cafe and police helicopters flew overhead in an area that houses several government and corporate headquarters.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott convened a national security meeting to deal with the "disturbing" development in Australia's biggest city.

The government said there was no clear motivation but a terror expert told Australia's Seven News that the flag belongs to militant group Jabah Al-Nusra, also known as Al-Nusra Front.

"We are doing all we can to set you free," New South Wales Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said, using a televised evening news conference to address the hostages directly. "We will be looking after your safety as our No. 1 priority."

Earlier, he had told reporters that "we have moved to a footing that would be consistent with a terrorist event" although he declined to comment on a motive, the number of assailants or hostages.

Some six hours into the siege, three men emerged from the popular cafe and ran for their lives. Around an hour later, two distraught women also fled. It was not clear if they escaped or were released.

One was barista Elly Chen, whose sister Nicole said on Facebook: "Yessss I finally see you. I'm so glad you're safe!!!!"

About 15 hostages could still be seen inside the cafe, said Chris Reason, a reporter at Channel Seven, whose office is opposite the cafe. "From inside Martin Place newsroom we can see (a) gunman is rotating hostages, forcing them to stand against windows, sometimes two hours at a time," he tweeted.

Among those left inside was an employee of Indian IT giant Infosys, the company said, as the leaders of India, Britain and Canada tweeted their concern. United States President Barack Obama was briefed on the crisis, the White House said.

Negotiators "have had contact and continue to have contact" with the armed man holding the hostages, NSW Deputy Police Commissioner Catherine Burn said. "We do not have information to suggest that anyone is harmed at this stage."

The hostage-taker, reportedly armed with a shotgun, made a series of demands through the Australian media, but they were retracted after the police requested they not be made public.

The scene of the drama, Martin Place, is Sydney's financial centre and houses several prominent buildings, including the New South Wales Parliament, the US consulate, the country's central bank and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

Many banks and businesses in the central business district closed early due to the scare and people were told to avoid the area.

At the nearby Sydney Opera House, where the police had swept the area earlier yesterday following talk of a bomb threat, evening performances were cancelled.

"It's sad to think this is my home and that it could happen anywhere," said onlooker Rebecca Courtney.

The hostages were taken in the morning, just minutes before the police announced a man had been arrested in Sydney on alleged terrorism offences.

The police said they did not believe the matters were related.

More than 70 Australians are believed to be fighting for ISIS in Iraq and Syria. At least 20 have died.

BEIJING
AN ITALIAN historian's hypothesis that Mona Lisa might be a Chinese slave and Leonardo da Vinci's mother - making the 15th century polymath half-Chinese - sent online commentators into a frenzy yesterday.

Angelo Paratico, a Hong Kong-based historian and novelist from Italy, told the South China Morning Post: "On the back of Mona Lisa, there is a Chinese landscape and even her face looks Chinese."

Chinese web users expressed astonishment and disbelief yesterday, posting dozens of parodies of the painting, with faces from Chinese comedians to British actor Rowan Atkinson grafted over her delicate features.

Little is known about Caterina, the mother of the artist, writer, mathematician and inventor, and the identity of the sitter for the portrait hanging in Paris' Louvre museum has long been a matter of debate.

Mr Paratico, who is finishing a book entitled Leonardo Da Vinci: A Chinese Scholar Lost In Renaissance Italy, cited Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud's 1910 assumption that the painting was inspired by the artist's mother.

"One wealthy client of da Vinci's father had a slave called Caterina. After 1452 - da Vinci's date of birth - she disappeared from the documents," he told the paper.

The evidence for a Chinese connection appears to be slight, with Mr Paratico saying he was sure "up to a point" that da Vinci's mother was from the Orient. "To make her an oriental Chinese, we need to use a deductive method," he added.

Many posters on China's Twitter-like Sina Weibo were incredulous (
unable to believe).

"I'm so sad that you thought I'm a foreigner!" wrote one, with an image of a frowning Mona Lisa holding two rolls of toilet paper and blowing her nose. "I'd rather be from wherever I am loved."

Another user replaced her features with unlikely faces ranging from Chinese male comedian Zhao Benshan to British actor Rowan Atkinson, to a grimacing robot holding a Mona Lisa mask.

The topic had been viewed more than four million times and triggered 160,000 postings by midday yesterday.

"I now understand why her smile looks so mysterious and concealed - it's typically Chinese," said another poster.
