National Day Stamp Issue: National Monuments

A Celebration of Architectural Link between the Past and the Present

Since 09 August 1965, Singapore has enjoyed economic prosperity and growth through the years.

Amidst such successes, the country has not forgotten the importance to preserve our unique historical past and multicultural heritage.

In this stamp issue, 6 National Monuments: Tan Teck Guan Building, College of Medicine Building, Bowyer Block at the Singapore General Hospital, Command House, the Chinese High School Clock Tower (now known as Hwa Chong Institution Clock Tower) and the former Raffles College campus at Bukit Timah are featured, showing the architectural links between our nation’s past and present built heritage.

As this is a National Day stamp issue, the NDP 2010 Logo will be featured as the datestamp.

Bowyer Block at the Singapore General Hospital (1st local stamp)
The Bowyer Block was opened as part of the Singapore General Hospital in 1926. Previously known as the Upper Block, it was renamed after Dr John Herbert Bowyer, the former Chief Medical Officer who died during the Second World War. Today, it is the only block that still remains standing and its distinctive clock tower has been re-adapted for use as the Singapore General Hospital Museum.

College of Medicine (2nd local stamp)
The College of Medicine building was opened in 1926 by Sir Laurence Nunns Guillemard, then Governor of the Straits Settlements and Patron of the College. It became the Faculty of Medicine for the University of Malaya in 1949, the National University of Singapore in 1982 and finally the headquarters of the Ministry of Health in 1987.

Command House (55¢ stamp)
The Command House, built in the 1930s, served as the official residence of 16 successive General Officers commanding Malaya and Singapore (1938-1971). Following the withdrawal of the British military from Singapore, the House served as the official residence of the Speaker of Parliament (1971-1989) and as a venue for State Functions (1993-1998). In 2007 it became the UBS Wealth Management Campus.

Chinese High School Clock Tower (65¢ stamp)
The Chinese High School Clock Tower (now known as Hwa Chong Institution Clock Tower) was completed in 1925. It was also used by the British forces as an artillery observation post in the Second World War. Today, the clock tower marks the significance of the institution as the first Chinese-medium secondary school to be built in Southeast Asia by its founder, Mr Tan Kah Kee.

Former Raffles College (Bukit Timah Campus) (80¢ stamp)
The Raffles College campus at Bukit Timah was opened in 1929 as the first institution to offer higher learning in Malaya. It later housed the University of Malaya (1949-1962), the University of Singapore (1962-1981), the National Institute of Education (1982-2000) and the Singapore Management University (2001-2005), and currently, the National University of Singapore’s Faculty of Law and Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy as well as several of the University’s research
institutes.

Tan Teck Guan Building (S$1.10 stamp)
The Tan Teck Guan Building was built in 1911 by Mr Tan Chay Yan in memory of his late father Mr Tan Teck Guan (the second son of Mr Tan Tock Seng). It was the site of the first medical school, known then as the Straits and Federal Malay States Government Medical School.
