Who would have thought that Joanne Peh’s first hosting gig would land her the award for Best Info-ed Programme Host? We managed to get a one-on-one with the birthday girl pre-show before she hit the red carpet to find out what who’s her thick-skinned pick for the Best Actress Award and what she really feels about this annual bash.

Tell us, what’s the feeling you get before going for the Star Awards?
It’s always very exciting It’d always be something new even though you may have done it many times before. Walking the red carpet feels new as you’re going to wear a new outfit … And a lot of things can happen. You don’t really know what to expect.

Can we say Star Awards is an event you look forward to?
I have mixed feelings about it. On one the hand, it’s very nerve wrecking and very stressful. Because there is so much hype about it, especially if you’re nominated and there are people talking about whether you’ll win this year.

It’s so stressful to deal with all that pressure. For that part it’s like, oh man it’s so stressful I don’t want to deal with it. On the other hand it’s a really nice feeling for everybody to get together, showcase what you have done in a year and reward those who have done well. That is what I look forward to.

There’s part of me which want to be one of the nominees, and part of me which thinks wouldn’t it be nice to sit back and just watch? But I had a lot of fun last night at the rehearsal. Everybody was in their most comfortable outfits sitting around just talking and joking. It was a great occasion for all the artistes to get together because as we don’t always get to see each other.

Do you think Star Awards is necessary?
Yes I think it’s absolutely necessary. It’s created to reward people for a job well done. It’s also serves as a motivation to produce better work and to keep people wanting to do more.

What do you think are your chances tonight as you’re up for three awards?
I don’t Know, I know I’ve got people calling up for me for the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes so I am hoping I can go up and thank them for that. As for info-Ed host, competition is very strong but at the same time, there’s been a lot of effort and support from the public.

And who’s your pick for Best Actress?
That’s a difficult one. It’s tough when you ‘re in the competition as well. But if I had to choose … of course I would say myself. We are all biased for ourselves. So pick me, lah! Pick me!

What are your after party plans?
My call time is at 6 am tomorrow and it’s my birthday! All I want is my ice cream cake from cold stone.

Perhaps your boyfriend Bobby Tonnelli will be waiting with a cold stone ice cream cake when you finish work?

WHEN you have practically made your acting career from playing the villainous and venomous "other woman", endearing yourself to television audiences can be tough.

That could explain why it took Eelyn Kok six years after joining MediaCorp to receive her first Top 20 Most Popular Female Artiste nomination, even though she has previously been nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.

In the course of her career, Eelyn has played the jealous harpy in several Channel 8 serials, including The Little Nyonya, The Dream Catchers and Women Of Times.

Pointing out that she has been given more diverse roles over the past two years, Eelyn's only good-natured complaint about playing unpleasant characters is that it's "tiring because you have to keep quarrelling with others and getting worked up".

You've scored Best Supporting Actress nominations for your roles in Kinship and The Little Nyonya, and your performance in Together also earned you a Best Actress nod. When do you think your time will come for an actual win?

Eelyn Kok: Maybe in a few years? You can't always have something just because you're hoping for it. Sometimes it's a matter of being in the right place at the right time. There are so many scripts and roles, and some roles may be less interesting than others.

Why do you think you've been cast as the shrew in so many drama serials?

In the past two years, I've been getting roles that are less like that, such as the characters I played in Precious Babes and My Buddy. Acting in Precious Babes was fun because I got to play a director, and it was fun (verbally sparring with) Qi Yuwu in the show. But yes, I have read comments on online forums such as, "Why does she always get this type of roles?" I don't know why I used to get those roles! (Laughs)

What else have you been busy with recently?

I'm about to finish a project called Bian Yuan Fu Zi (On The Fringe) Tomorrow's the last day of filming. Fann (Wong) and (Li) Nanxing will also be in it. There are several interconnected stories. Alan (Tern) and I play a husband and wife who always quarrel - basically, my character is a little over-suspicious and keeps thinking her husband is having an affair. I play a tai tai. She's got nothing to do at home so she starts imagining things.

Speaking of marriage, what has married life been like for you?

Being married is not quite what I expected - I'm still getting used to having less personal space. In the past, when I was living alone, I didn't have to fight for the toilet with someone else. I could spend the entire day just watching television programmes on my laptop. But now that there's someone else in my life, I have to make an effort to spend quality time with him. If not, we'd just be living separate lives, right?
