A funny selfie of two caretakers with two "posing" gorillas made the rounds on the Internet when it was first posted online last week, with many questioning if the selfie was real.

Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo posted on Facebook on Monday (April 22) to confirm the selfie's authenticity.

"Those gorilla gals are always acting cheeky so this was the perfect shot of their true personalities!" said the post.

The orphaned mountain gorillas could not hide their affection for keeper Andre Bauma. Females Ndakasi and Ndeze, and male Matabishi enveloped him in cuddles and even playfully climbed up for a piggy-back.

This gorilla certainly found a keeper when she wrapped her arms around Andre the park ranger. Young gorilla Ndazi shared a big hug with Andre before jumping on him for a piggyback.
Andre is employed as one of the keepers at Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where he looks after animals at risk of losing their habitat.

Andre then gives her a piggyback around the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Not only do they have a very close bond, forged over ten years in the case of the females, but Andre effectively acts as the alpha male of the group, monitoring behaviour and admonishing when necessary – a role which cannot be easy given the superior strength of his charges.

The selfie was taken at the Senkwekwe sanctuary at the national park, featuring two female orphaned gorillas named Ndakazi and Ndeze and their caretakers Mathieu and Patrick.

It was first uploaded on The Elite AntiPoaching Units and Combat Trackers Facebook page last Thursday and credited ranger Mathieu Shamavu for the photo.

The post has since been shared more than 23,000 times and has more than 30,000 reactions.

The park said in its post that it is not surprising to see the gorillas standing on two feet as most primates are comfortable walking upright for short bursts of time.

The park's deputy director said that the animals had learned to imitate their carers, who had looked after them since they were found, reported BBC.

The gorillas' mothers were both killed in July 2007, when the gorillas were four months old and two years old at the time. They were found shortly afterwards and taken to the sanctuary, where they have lived since, said BBC.

The park's Facebook post emphasised that the photo was taken under exceptional circumstances, as approaching gorillas in the wild is not permitted.

The two gorillas were in an enclosed sanctuary that they have been living in since infancy, and the caretakers take care not to put the health of the gorillas in danger, said the park, a Unesco world heritage site.

It also took the opportunity to share more about its fundraiser, where donations would allow them to continue to conserve Virunga's wildlife.

Through work with psychologist Francine “Penny” Patterson, Koko appeared to learn an adapted version of American Sign Language dubbed “Gorilla Sign Language,” or GSL. However, scientists have long debated to what extent the gorilla understood that language.
De Waal said the reason gorillas imitate human behavior is “not because they think it is fun” but because “they identify with those who take care of them.”
“Apes are naturally imitative (hence the verb aping) and a parent is imitated more than others. Imitation is often driven by attachment,” he added.

SINGAPORE - Eleven leaders and representatives of different religions from the Inter-Religious Organisation (IRO) gathered on Thursday (April 25) to pay their respects to the victims of the Sri Lankan bomb attacks on Easter Sunday, which have claimed at least 359 lives.

The IRO visited the Sri Lanka High Commission in Singapore, where the 11 leaders, representing nine different religions, took turns to write messages of condolences in a book.

Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, Mr O.L. Ameer Ajwad, said: "Terrorism has no religion, has no place here, and has no heart.
"I am grateful to the members of the IRO who are here today to show solidarity with Sri Lanka. We will all pray for a better Sri Lanka, and a peaceful Sri Lanka."

President of the IRO, Mr Ben J. Benjamin, also offered some words of prayer at the visit.
"We pray for long and everlasting peace for those who have been prematurely taken away from us."

The inter-faith visit served to "show the powerful face of solidarity in moments where terrorists try to rip us apart", added Mr Benjamin.

The IRO has also strongly condemned the attacks, calling them "a cruel act against innocent people".

"These acts of violence are particularly aimed to cause fear and sow the seeds of discord among people of different faiths. It is precisely in these trying moments where we must come together as one to uphold the principles of humanity," it said in a statement.

"The IRO prays for peace and solidarity to prevail in Sri Lanka and around the world in these difficult times."

We need Psalm 23:2, "He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,".

Romans 12:19: “Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.”

John 16:33: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Psalm 34:18: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
