SINGAPORE - Belgian logistics group Katoen Natie has started operating its first driverless truck at ExxonMobil's manufacturing site on Jurong Island.

The truck transports polymer products between the company's packaging and intermediate storage facilities. It operates round the clock, seven days a week, to move some 250,000 tonnes of goods a year.

At a demonstration Tuesday (Oct24), Katoen Natie said the autonomous truck project will be expanded gradually after a six-month trial to 12 trucks, moving some 3 million tonnes of product annually.

The company would not say how much the driverless truck cost, only to say that 70 per cent of funding came from government subsidies. It added that the unmanned vehicle would pay for itself within a year.

The truck is guided by 3,800 transponders (transmitter-responder) buried in the tarmac (material used for surfacing roads) along a fixed route at a top speed of 25kmh - the limit in the petrochemical complex. The company said its next step would be to use GPRS-guided trucks, as well as to introduce unmanned trucks on public roads.

Katoen Natie Singapore chief executive Koen Cardon said he sees a shortage of labour as a real challenge for the logistics group in the years ahead.

"We need to get smarter, and we need to get more productive," he said. "This is exactly what we're doing with this project."

In consultation with Singapore Management University, which recommended Dutch autonomous vehicle specialist VDL as a partner, Katoen Natie fitted a 50ft flatbed truck with sensors and guidance systems early this year (2017). Between May and September, the truck underwent trials on-site.

Mr Cardon said: "This project is a perfect example of the innovation we bring to the forefront to create value for our customers as well as creating the opportunities to upgrade the skills of our workforce."

Elsewhere, Singapore is pushing ahead to roll out driverless vehicles from 2020.

In January, Scania and Toyota Tsusho signed an agreement with PSA and the Ministry of Transport to design, develop and test a truck-platooning system - where a human-driven truck leads a convoy of driverless trucks via wireless communications, for use on the roads.

Drinking too much water brings a host of horrors, some of which can be lethal.

Having too much water dilutes your blood, which decreases the concentration of sodium and electrolytes in our bodies.

Since sodium is what regulates the water in and around our cells, our cells begin swelling up.

According to Dr Tamara Hew-Butler, a science professor at Oakland University, if our brain cells swell up to more than 10 per cent, it can reach our skull and possibly push the brain stem out of place.

But how much is too much? As it depends on each individual, always consult your doctor before drastically lowering or increasing your water intake.

Hong Kong TVB actress Selena Li (李诗韵 Lǐ shī yùn) couldn't help but laugh out loud at last year's viral hit Unbelievable, by her Spouse For House 2 co-star, local actor Chen Tianwen (陈天文 Chén tiān wén).

The song and its accompanying retro music video, featuring Chen in character as Ah Beng Eric Kwek, became a hit after it was used as promotional material for the Channel 5 comedy series, in which Li and local actor Alaric Tay play the lead couple.

The song even spawned a big screen spin-off - musical comedy Mr Unbelievable, which starred Chen. It opened here last December (2015).

Li was in town on Tuesday to promote her new TVB crime drama Presumed Accidents and StarHub's TVB Awards, which will be held here next month (October 2016).

She has not had the chance to watch Mr Unbelievable, but said she will try and get a copy of it from Ong, whom she still keeps in touch with even though filming for Spouse For House 2 ended early last year.

Li did not get to interact much with Chen during filming, but she hopes to work with him in the near future.

She said: "I think he is a really good actor... I heard he was nominated for (Best Supporting Actor) at the Golden Horse Awards (in 2013)."

She added that the cast and crew of Spouse For House 2 were happy with Chen's return to the second season of the series as he has good chemistry with Ong.

LOVES S'PORE
Li, who is single, said she would "definitely be very interested" in doing another season of Spouse For House or any other local TV show.

She said: "Staying here is a big bonus for me and besides, the working hours here are good.

"Even when I'm not filming here, I would still come to Singapore for leisure."

Li is nominated for My Favourite TVB Female TV Character and My Favourite TVB Supporting Actress for Presumed Accidents at the StarHub TVB Awards.

The series, which also stars Lawrence Ng and Sisley Choi, is about insurance investigation and fraud, with a side plot about past life regression. It premieres on 05 September 2016 at 8pm on VV Drama (StarHub TV Ch 855).

Even though Li plays three characters from three different eras, her role in Presumed Accidents was not as challenging as her twin roles in the 2014 TVB period drama Ghost Dragon Of Cold Mountain.

She said: "I had to (portray) two different characters (in one scene) - a village girl and a courtesan.

"They had many dramatic and emotional scenes together, they fight and cry, it was mentally challenging to do those scenes (with myself).
 
"This is unlike Presumed Accidents, where the scenes for my three characters are all separate.

"I always joke with people and say that last time, I did two roles in one drama and this time, I did three roles, so next time I can do a drama all by myself."

We need a community to create the spaces that will contain the suffering of the aged, infirm and dying without marginalisation or estrangement. To imagine that we can go solo in the path of life and dying is unrealistic and indeed painful.
