Just as Uber announced a few weeks ago that self-driving Uber cars would be hitting the streets in Pittsburgh, USA, the company is already looking to the future with flying vehicles that take off and land to get around a city.

The Next Web reports that Recode had a chance to speak with Uber's head of products Jeff Holden at The Nantucket Project conference where it was made known that the company is researching small planes with vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capabilities.

Holden said the idea is to offer customers "as many options as possible to move around."

He added that VTOL planes would not need a long runway like traditional aircraft and could prove to be a clever way to avoid traffic jams.

These aircraft would still need ample space to land as much as a helicopter needs a landing pad which could prove challenging for congested cities.

Uber is not the first company to explore flight as a means of commuter transportation and will most likely not be the last.

While technology for VTOL taxis are still being developed, it would be interesting to see how the self-driving Uber car trials would fare.

A rare partial solar eclipse, the first in seven years here, captivated the region yesterday morning. Thousands turned out to document the spectacle, such as this sight captured at 8.19am at the Sultan Mosque along Muscat Street. At its peak, 87 per cent of the sun was obscured by the moon.

The responsibilities of her position weighed heavily upon her.
Let me recount to you the tale.
For as you shall discover, despite the poetic fears of a certain planet, their story ends not so well after all.
A cloak that will make it invisible when the right time comes.
But the singlehood persists harshly, unforgivably and relentlessly.
Once tried to approach someone, but been yell at to get away.
The words and tone penetrates the soul like nobody's business.
So shameful, if only invisibility will come.
The whole world knows about the rejections, and it really hurts.
Something breaks the heart, only can lower the head in despair.
Maybe darkness can hide the pain.
A smile on the face but raining in the heart.
The young children offer some comfort.
Why are the eyes very wet?

You may have experienced sudden, jerky body movements as you drift into sleep. The sensation is common, and if paired with a dream, can feel like you’ve suddenly moved or fallen.

When it seems like it’s part of a dream, say falling through the air, this is called dream incorporation, and reveals our mind’s amazing capacity to improvise, wrote Tom Stafford in his BBC Future Neurohacks column on the phenomenon in 2012.

The experience is known as a ‘hypnic jerk’ and it sheds light onto the conflict in our brains as we shut down for sleep.

Is it dangerous?
A strange and very unpleasant phenomenon called ‘exploding head syndrome’ follows a similar pattern of behaviour – our wakeful and sleeping minds attempting to wrest control from each other – and results in the sensation of seeing flashing lights and hearing loud bangs. In some extreme cases the phenomenon has led to severe insomnia and even claims of alien abduction. When written about the phenomenon recently, readers shared their strange 'exploding head' experiences on Facebook.

IS 128GB of storage space on your smartphone or tablet simply not enough for you? Here's some good news.

SanDisk has announced a 200GB memory card called the SanDisk Ultra microSDX UHS-I Card.

That may not seem a lot if you are viewing it from a normal storage perspective, but for microSD cards, 200GB is a huge 56 per cent increase over SanDisk's 128GB cards from last year.

Capacity upgrades usually happen in multiples of two, so 256GB is logically the next tier up from 128GB.

With SanDisk choosing to release a 200GB version instead of a 256GB one, it is not unreasonable to assume that technological constraints are limiting how much more storage can be compressed into the microSD size.

The 200GB card is not cheap, however, and will set you back US$399.99 (S$550) when it hits stores in the second quarter of this year.

IT CAN be hard to believe that a blue/black and white/gold dress broke the Internet last weekend.

An innocent question about the colour of the dress from a teenager on a small Scottish island, posted on social media last Thursday, had unanticipated far-reaching implications.

Everyone from celebrities like Taylor Swift and Mindy Kaling to politicians in the United States, and even Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, weighed in on the question.

Science has come to the rescue to explain the difference in colour perception. Here are five things you should know about the dress that has the Internet world splitting its head.

The dress is blue and black, period.
Peter Christodoulou, owner of British clothing company Roman Originals which made the dress, told the Washington Post that it is blue and black.

But a white and gold version will be out soon.
An actual white and gold version of the dress can be expected by the end of the year. Mr Christodoulou told the Washington Post that there have been many requests for a white and gold version of the dress following the Internet frenzy, and that the clothing company would take about five months to make the dress available.

The science behind it
If you see the dress as white and gold, your brain has removed shadows cast on the dress. In a scientific explanation, the New York Times attributed the divide to "colour constancy", the eyes' ability to assign fixed colours to objects under widely different lighting conditions.

Different people may pick up different visual cues in the image, which can change how they interpret and name the colours, the article said.

Age matters
According to a poll on Buzzfeed, which first picked up the dress colour question and confused the Internet world, age seems to play a part in colour perception. The poll showed that the majority of the 74 per cent who saw the dress as blue and black were above 60 years old.

Why the immense interest?
The Inquisitor online news website, beyond looking at the science of the colour of the dress, delved  (dig) into the science of why people care about it.

It seems the vast majority of people "would rather discuss the colour of a dress, a funny, innocuous debate, than deal with hard truths like beheadings by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria", it said.

This is because people do not feel they have much to say about more serious topics because they are not experts, while they are experts on what they see and what they do not.
