"The instances of unacceptable behaviour and activities that have surfaced this week play no part in a university education," the spokesman said. "The university is conducting thorough investigations into these unacceptable as well as unauthorised activities."

SINGAPORE - National University of Singapore (NUS) president Tan Chorh Chuan said it was not the university's intention to do away with orientation, days after it declared a suspension of all student-organised freshman activities.

Speaking at the Freshmen Inauguration Ceremony on Monday (01 August 2016), Professor Tan apologised to freshmen for recent controversies that have clouded their first days at NUS.

The picture also showed many other students laughing during the incident, Sin Chew Daily reported. Netizens said the act had gone overboard as it was humiliating and tormenting to the affected ones.

A university spokesman said they were investigating the matter and vowed to act against those involved.

In an unprecedented move last Friday (29 July 2016), NUS shocked students with an announcement that it was suspending orientation activities "with immediate effect".

The decision came after a video emerged of freshmen of both sexes being dunked repeatedly in a pond in Sheares Hall on 27 July 2016, as well as a recent New Paper report on increasingly sexualised games, including the simulation of rape scenes, at orientation camps.

"For the vast majority, orientation is an exciting, positive and memorable experience - learning about a new environment, making new friends, and having a foretaste of the myriad of academic and co-curricular options at NUS," he noted.

"The University does, however, expect orientation activities to be fully respectful of the dignity of all those participating, and, in recent years, we have put in place many measures to help ensure this.

"In particular, we make our stand very clear: we do not condone behaviour, games and activities that denigrate the dignity of individuals and that are sexualised.

"It is very disappointing that a few in our student community have clearly not internalised this."

Despite the "time-out" enforced by the suspension, Prof Tan stressed that moving forward, NUS was not doing away with orientation.

"We want to work with you to rethink how to do orientation in more meaningful ways so that all students, especially freshmen, will get to enjoy the orientation experience," he added.

"There are a wide range things to consider, and we need the time and space necessary to do so over the next few weeks and months."

Prof Tan also called for the NUS community, including the public, to strongly support its annual charity Rag and Flag day by the NUS Students' Union (Nussu), which kicks off on Tuesday.

Nussu had apologised on Sunday to the freshmen who underwent sexualised activities, branding the activities "indecent, reprehensible and not condoned".

Paul painted a true and hideous picture of how things will be in the last days.
PHOTO: Paul painted a true and hideous picture of how things will be in the last days. The terrible times of the last days will be populated by the terrible people of that age, who will display the worst kinds of human behaviour and sinfulness.
In 2 Timothy 3:2-5, Paul states: "People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God - having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them."
The word "them" refers to the characteristics and not the people if we read also 2 Timothy 4:1-5.

The purpose is not for Timothy and all the disciples of Jesus who would read this epistle to respond by withdrawing from this awful world.
PHOTO: The purpose is not for Timothy and all the disciples of Jesus who would read this epistle to respond by withdrawing from this awful world. Rather, the challenge is to be involved in this world, by the grace of God, so that who we are and what we do would result in the redemption of many of these people trapped in sinful behaviour in a darkening world.
The proper Christian response to the sinful world of the last days is to mediate the presence of Christ through the manifestation of Christ's character and ministry.

The problem in Paul's time, as in ours, is that there were false teachers who were making the darkness even darker.
PHOTO: The problem in Paul's time, as in ours, is that there were false teachers who were making the darkness even darker. It was imperative (of vital importance) for sincere and committed ministers such as Timothy to ensure that the Word of God was taught and that the true gospel was faithfully preached. It is with this in mind that Paul gave his inspiring charge to Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:1-5.
