Best congratulations on your graduation and best wishes for 'the road ahead'.
PHOTO: Best congratulations on your graduation and best wishes for 'the road ahead'. Without doubt this is your well-deserved success and we are very happy to share your excitement. We are very proud of you. Well done!

Your graduation has a memorable difference. We are in the midst of a pandemic. Your major in nursing couldn't come at a better time. Our Lord make no mistake in preparing you for the tasks that no ordinary people can fulfill. While writing this message, the world has 191,220,126 Coronavirus Cases, leaving 4,105,743 dead (Monday, 19 July 2021 at 03:00 GMT). The coronavirus COVID-19 is affecting 220 countries and territories. Wherever we may be, we need nurses, especially now.

Right from the start upon your graduation, you are already in the battle field. We shared your deep concern fighting an unseen and deadly enemy. But we admired the way you stand stoically facing of the dangerous environment without showing or complaining about the pain and hardship. We notice how tired you are, lacking time for your proper meals, rest and breaks. And there are many who are still ungrateful, shunning you in many ways. Take heart, there are many out there who consider you as their white angel giving them the much needed care and help.

Once upon a time there were small dragons. Those brave baby dragons overcome the tough journey with all their efforts and hardwork, learning and understand our world. After 26 years, equipped with skills, knowledge, and passion, we see them in hospitals and healtcare places.

We are comforted by these strong dragons standing in the frontline protecting us during the hours of need. Your graduation, and passion confirm our security against dreadful dangers. You are very important to us and everybody. Your contributions are much sought after, and so are your love and gratitude.

Believe and trust in the Lord, our God, and may His blessing comes upon you, which really matters.

With love today, and always.

According to The Straits Times, hundreds of her friends gathered at her wake on Friday (Apr 20) and Saturday (Apr 21).

They were mostly from NUS's Tembusu College where Miss Ong was a resident.

The wake was held at the Church of St Teresa in Kampong Bahru.

Her mother Jacqueline Ong, 45, said that it was where Miss Ong was baptised and felt "most at peace".

"We were very close as a family. We talked a lot, she's very open, and discusses everything with me," she told The Straits Times.

The environmental studies undergraduate, and only child, was in her first year at NUS.

Despite being a first-year student, Miss Ong was very active and joined various school committees.

Her friends described her as a genuine, friendly and fun-loving girl who enjoyed the occasional pranks.

"Once, she made cookies out of cricket flour and fed them to us without telling us," said a friend. "She told us only after we had finished eating."

"She was the nicest person in Tembusu - the nicest person I know," said another friend, who also declined to be named. "She was someone who put others before herself."

Another girlfriend remembered her as a filial child who was extremely close to her parents.

"Everything she did, she had her parents in mind," she said. "She would talk about them all the time. We could all tell they meant a lot to her."

Mrs Ong said that her daughter took after her and that they had similar characters.

"She is my source of joy," she said.

Singapore General Hospital Attachment (Week 5 & 6), 05 June to 16 June 2017 - Reflection

By Bernard Goh - My week 6 attachment at SGH in the Nursing course

It was just like yesterday that we had started our attachment at the surgical and medical wards at Singapore General Hospital.
PHOTO: It was just like yesterday that we had started our attachment at the surgical and medical wards at Singapore General Hospital. Into week 6, SGH had definitely helped our improvement in  the speed at which we can get things done. What was slow at the beginning, but surely we have learned and mastered how to take reports, make proper documentation, respond to patients, locate items and execute procedures faster and better.
The faith and trust which every healthcare professional has from the staffs and patients are earned through discipline and hard work together with the professional guidance from the senior staffs. SGH knows this successful philosophy and has put in tremendous effort to ensure that their staffs share, teach, rebuke, correct, train and even learn from their junior the proper operational procedure and etiquette of a healthcare professional.
We will always thrive to give the patient the best medical care and utmost comfort. They will bring home their good health which they once have, and the memories of our warm, support, understanding and loving attentions.

What seems to be a long attachment is finally coming to an end. It was a very eventful 6 weeks and I’ve definitely learned many new things along the way.

The greatest difference between a medical ward and a surgical ward would be the conditions of the patients. Specifically, I felt that the patient’s condition can change more rapidly and drastically in the medical ward. After witnessing 1 or 2 cases of such changes, it serves as a reminder for me to be alert to patient’s condition especially when they do not voice out that they are feeling uncomfortable.

Being in a respiratory ward has also left me helpless sometimes. There were moments where the patient told me they were feeling breathless. I did what I could to position them, check their parameters, and inform staff nurse to ensure that necessary medications were administered. However, the condition was not improving. Because of that, I constantly tell myself what else I could have done to make the situation better but sad to say, there were cases where nothing can be done.

When patient indicate that they are feeling breathless, we did what we could; position them, check their parameters, and inform staff nurse to ensure that necessary medications were administered.

Another improvement I felt through these 6 weeks is the speed at which I am getting things done. Slowly but surely I am learning how to take reports, respond to patients, locate items, execute procedures, use the COW better and faster, etc. Making progress is definitely important in boosting our morale. Additionally, our clinical instructors would give us feedback and test us regularly to trigger our critical thinking. I guess a little bit of stress once in a while is good, such as being push to our limits.

Another improvement I felt through these 6 weeks is the speed at which I am getting things done.

Our hospitals in Singapore are going high-tech and Computer On Wheel are being used in many tasks like nurse medication dispensing, presentation, and patient care planning. All these tasks can now be carry out with the help of these COWs almost anywhere, and information are available almost instantly within the hospital.Knowing the medication for a patient is already an indication of what could possibly be the condition of the patient. We can then recommend, for example, the correct meals selection to the patients. A patient with irregular heart beats will not be offered coffee, tea or milo. Strictly no caffeine because it can irritate the central nervous system further. Any food or fruits with high potassium content may increases the body's potassium level above the unacceptable 5.1 value, and is therefore not appropriate to be taken.

Lastly, I am quite satisfied with the posting these 6 weeks. Although I am still lacking in many areas and there are yet many more new things to learn, I will ensure that my basics are strong as good foundation skills are needed before we can proceed with mastering higher level skills.

There are many more new things to learn and new medical areas to explore whether in hospital or educational institutions.
PHOTO: There are many more new things to learn and new areas to explore whether in hospitals or educational institutions. The basic fundamentals must be strong in order to have a good foundation of the skills in our profession. There is a real need to ensure that both are attained before we venture into another level of skill sets.

Whatever happens, we must never leave the path of care, comfort and well-being of the patients who will truly be the source of our inner joys and blessings. These are the discovery we made at SGH from its staffs and management. The journey is tough and the going is rough at times, but we can say that "together we can make it".

The fond memories of the past still remains in our hearts, and will remain so, for a long time to come.
