Runners go-go-going down Orchard Road dressed as Power Rangers after the flag-off of the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore's 42km race yesterday morning. Nearly 50,000 runners took to the streets of downtown Singapore for the annual event, which is now 14 years old.

The Ekiden is a team relay, whereby six participants (of mixed or same gender) will complete in six stages of unequal distances, totalling 42.195km. The Ekiden is a big event in Japan and other parts of the world such as the United States of America and Australia. Following the successful organisation of the first Ekiden in Singapore at the SCMS 2010, this will be the sixth time we will be having the Ekiden race category.

Flash floods seen across several areas in Singapore

Heavy rain on Saturday afternoon saw flash floods at Lorong Buangkok, Hougang Avenue 8 and Ang Mo Kio.

SINGAPORE: Several areas across the Republic saw flash floods on Saturday afternoon (5 December 2015) following heavy thunderstorms.


The Straits Times reported that two cars were stranded outside Church of St Vincent de Paul along Yio Chu Kang Road.

At about 4pm, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said on Twitter to expect thunderstorms over northern, eastern and central Singapore between 4.05pm and 5pm. At around 4.40pm, the PUB issued an alert to flash floods at Lorong Buangkok.

PUB also warned of the high water levels in areas such as Tampines Road, Cactus Road and Chin Bee Avenue.

According to Facebook user Lyrrel Tan, the junction of Hougang Avenue 6 and Hougang Avenue 8 was flooded to about ankle high. He said he saw several cars stranded and buses were also delayed due to rain. He added that some buses had to skip certain bus stops because of the amount of the flood at the stop. Commuters were seen standing on seats at the bus stop to avoid the rain water.

A NSW man was killing time in his shed earlier this week when he came across a monster lizard in his backyard.

Eric Holland was quick enough to snap a photo of the estimated 1.5-metre lace monitor scaled on the side of his Thurgoona home.

"I was just doing a repair job in my shed when I opened the door and I saw this huge thing run across the ground and out of sight," Mr Holland said.

"I went inside after I saw it in the backyard and heard a banging noise coming from the side of the house.
"When I went outside I saw him on the side of the house with his tail hitting the drain pipe."

Mr Holland, who has lived in the area for 18 years, said he has never seen anything quite like it.

Eric Holland first spotted the giant goanna outside the steps of his shed.

"It was a big surprise really.

"I sometimes get blue tongues and lizards in the backyard but never anything quite like this."

The goanna quickly shuffled off Mr Holland's property and he has not sighted the reptile since.

The NSW Office of Environment and Heritage said it would not be unusual for a lace monitor to be found in the area around Albury.

Lace monitors, also known as lace goannas, can grow to around two metres in length and weight up to 20 kilograms.

A Facebook post by the Border Mail on Mr Holland's discovery has had more than 1000 likes, comments and shares since it was posted on Thursday morning.

WORK to transform Ang Mo Kio into a model walking and cycling town has begun.

In a joint statement yesterday, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) said the first phase of the project, which includes a 4km cycling path looping around Ang Mo Kio Avenues 1, 3 and 8, is expected to be completed by next June.

By then, cyclists and pedestrians will be able to travel seamlessly from the swimming complex along Avenue 1 to the Ang Mo Kio MRT Station.

The remaining work, which features a 16km cycling path network, including a 2.6km cycling and walking corridor connecting the MRT viaduct between Yio Chu Kang MRT Station and Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, is expected to be mostly completed by 2018.

The network will also link up with Mayflower and Lentor stations along the future Thomson line.

URA chief executive Ng Lang yesterday described the project as "an important pilot" that aims to "encourage walking and cycling as alternative modes of green mobility".

LTA chief executive Chew Men Leong added: "We will go beyond providing basic walking and cycling infrastructure and test out new concepts and ideas to make the town even more walkable and cyclist-friendly."

For instance, a large terrarium housing special orchids, as well as uncommon and native forest plants, will be built below the viaduct.

Fitness stations and play equipment will also be erected.

When completed, Ang Mo Kio will have a 20km cycling path network - the longest in any residential town. The network will be marked out in red and pedestrian-priority zones will be created in areas where pedestrians and cyclists often come into contact with each other, such as behind bus stops.

These priority zones will include rumble strips to slow cyclists down and markings to help pedestrians and cyclists keep to their side of the path. Mapboards highlighting key amenities and transport nodes will help users to navigate the network. Totem poles with speed-check functions will also be set up.

LTA said the safety of traffic junctions and crossings will be enhanced with features to slow motorists down.

Motorists will be also alerted to the presence of pedestrians and cyclists.

Cycling advocate Han Jok Kwang said: "It's important to get one model town done and done well, so that it can be a benchmark."

He added that Ang Mo Kio, being relatively compact and with MRT and park connector access, allows for benefits of such a network to be felt more immediately.

LTA would not say how much the project is likely to cost, as tenders for the second phase have not been called.

But in 2013, the authority said it was working on building cycling paths in nine neighbourhoods, which would cost up to $43 million. The Marina Bay network alone is estimated to cost $23 million.

By 2020, cyclists can expect around 190km of paths.
