Imagine heading out for a snorkelling trip and coming upon a one-metre-long scorpion, tail extended over its head, pouncing on its preys and then lifting them with its large forearms to gobble them up.

If you lived in China hundreds of millions of years ago , this would not have been out of the realm of possibility, and it certainly would have been disconcerting because you would have been running into the apex predator of the era.

Chinese scientists unearthed this sea scorpion, called Terropterus xiushanensis, according to a research paper published in the latest issue of Science Bulletin.

The ocean beast was about the size of a small corgi and probably lived in the oceans of the southern half of modern-day China during the Silurian Period, which was between 416 million and 443 million years ago.

The scientists did not lock down a specific time frame when they believed the Terropterus lived.

The scorpion’s most striking feature was the sharp barbs extending from its forearms, which the authors of the study hypothesised were used to catch prey.

Bearing such large spiny legs and probably a poisonous telson to catch and strike the prey, Terropterus is likely to have played an important role of top predators in the marine ecosystem during the Early Silurian when there were no large vertebrate competitors in South China,” the authors wrote in the study.

The fact that the forearms, called pedipalps, are used for hunting is an interesting evolutionary nugget because, in many arachnids, especially spiders, they are often used for reproduction. But, among arachnids, scorpions are a notable exception of pedipalps being used as predatory tools.

The “poisonous telson” is reminiscent of modern scorpions, albeit it lacks the notable venom gland, according to artist renditions of the Terropterus.

While Terropterus was an apex predator during its time, it would be unlikely to pose much of a threat to humans if it existed today, preferring instead to feast on molluscs and fish.

The sea creature was a mixopterid, which were part of a group of extinct arthropods called eurypterids and were closely related to horseshoe crabs and modern arachnids, such as spiders and scorpions.

During the Silurian Period, Eurypterids, like our Terropterus , were the apex predators. The arthropods of this time were huge, with the largest known species being the Jaekelopterus rhenaniae , which is believed to have grown as large as 2.5 metres.

The Terropterus is the oldest known mixopterid in China and is thought to have lived around Gondwana, a supercontinent that formed around 600 million years ago and broke up approximately 180 million years ago.

Two island-like formations off the coast of Gondwana eventually drifted together to form modern-day northern and southern China.

The palaeogeographical distribution of mixopterids was rather limited until now and no examples of this group have been previously discovered in Gondwana,” the scientists wrote.

The paper is based on two separate sets of fossils, one from near Wuhan, in central China’s Hunan province, and the other from Xiushan, in southwest China’s Chongqing province.

The Silurian Period was part of the Paleozoic Era, a time of incredible evolutionary change. It was defined by shallow oceans, which allowed sunlight to penetrate and allowed for diverse ecosystems to flourish.

An ecological park in southwest China has been forced to close for the rest of the year because hundreds of tourists have stripped it of its celebrated lotus flowers.

Longqiao Cultural and Ecological Park in Sichuan province's Lu county has been closed since late March for watercourse construction and was due to reopen soon.

The park is well known for its sprawling fields of lotus flowers that cover around 250,000 square metres (62 acres) - an area larger than New York's grand central station.

Videos of groups of 'aunties' breaking into the park to pluck out its lotus flowers and bring them home have been circulating across China's web, drawing strong criticism from netizens.

But since the start of the summer blossom season last month, hundreds of people have been breaking into the park to pick the flowers, forcing managers to keep it closed for the rest of the year.

"We cannot control the tourists. We can just guarantee we've done our job well. We've put notes on the park gate and near the flower field and we have security personnel on patrol as well," a member of staff surnamed Zhou said.

Zhou added that the construction work in the park was almost finished but there was no point in reopening because there were virtually no flowers left.

Around two to three hundred people a day are still believed to be breaking into the park, and have forced management to increase the number of security patrols to ensure their safety.

God created the world and the very first verse of the Bible says, In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). When we see the world as a gift from God, we will do our best to take care of it and use it wisely, instead of poisoning or destroying it. (Genesis 2:15).

He also leaves behind his girlfriend, Kelly Kwong Ka-yi, who was left devastated by the Hong Kong record-breaking swimmer's death in Florida. He had been training at the Gator Swim Club of the University of Florida, and died in hospital after feeling unwell following a warm-up before practice.

To, who was born in Hong Kong but emigrated to Australia at the age of two, had always said that one of the reasons he returned to the city in 2016 was because he wanted to be with Kwong. They had met for the first time a year earlier and their love blossomed.

To met Kwong during the 2015 World Cup short-course meeting in Hong Kong where Kwong worked as an announcer. They had a lot of things in common, not least their love for the sport.

Kwong's parents are swimming instructors and run the Lai Wa Swimming Club. She also trained as a swimmer and understands the kind of work needed to be a world-class swimmer.

She took a different path to To, graduating from the language department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and completing a masters in speech therapy at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She works as a speak therapist.

To had praised Kwong for introducing him to Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Sports Institute, where he continued his swimming career in the most prominent way, producing 17 Hong Kong records.

And To had always professed his love for Kwong, not feeling shy even in front of cameras during interviews to say that Kwong had always been the girl for him and they were a match made in heaven. "I love you very much," he said to Kwong during one interview, adding that Kwong could be credited for helping him brush up on his Cantonese.

When To first trained at the Hong Kong Sports Institute he was excited with the facilities at his disposal and he thanked Kwong.

"Thank you Kelly for suggesting that I come to Hong Kong to swim. There are facilities in the gymnasium, including accommodation, swimming pools, physical fitness rooms, dietitians, scientific research, etc.

"I don't have this kind of treatment in Australia. In Australia, I often practise with some student swimmers but now I can train with full-time swimmers in Hong Kong. The swimmers are training together and progressing faster."

Kwong finally summoned the courage to break her silence, saying on Instagram: "Thank you for your support, I finally have the courage to read the comments.

"It's really hard to stay strong coz it hurts so much to admit that he's actually gone ... but I'll try, try to be tough like he used to be, and what he would want me to be.

Kelly Kwong Ka-yi, flew to the United States after hearing the devastating news. She also replied to her friends' messages of condolences on Instagram yesterday.

"Thank you everyone for your support, I finally have the courage to read the comments, it's really hard to admit that he's actually gone but I'll try, try to be tough like he used to be, and what he would want me to be," wrote Kwong, who had been a couple with To since 2015.
Kenneth To had told the media the biggest reason he returned to the SAR in 2016 was because he wanted to be with Kwong.
