Care to go beyond - I choose to be a nurse
PHOTO: Care to go beyond - I choose to be a nurse

Becoming a nurse was my childhood dream but my dream actually got shelved.

After 27 years, everything changed. My name is Lih Ling, people also call me Cindy. I am a Staff Nurse, working in the Sengkang General Hospital at the orthopaedic ward.

In 2015 my mother was warded into the ICU due to massive stroke. I saw the nurses so selflessly nursing the patients, and that act actually inspired me. My dream of becoming a nurse kept flooding back. When I received the letter that I'd been selected into the Professional Conversion Programme, I was very excited going to school.

But sadly, two weeks later into the course, my mother passed away. It's very sad that she will never see me become a nurse. The regret is that I'll never have a chance to nurse her, but that doesn't stop me.

As a Staff Nurse, my job is to implement care, and evaluate the progress of the patient. I also have to coach junior nurses to ensure that they actually provide quality care to my patient on a consistent basis.

I love the teamwork. Especially the ward that I'm working with - they're very willing to share their experience with each other. That actually gives me the motivation to continue to do better and better each day.

COVID-19 has taught me a lot things, like how to empathise with the patient, and how to really know each other's needs. Nothing is of greater joy than when you see your patient's health improve day by day.

You do have a part to play in making people's lives better.

I've been a nurse for almost a year. After a short while, the COVID-19 outbreak came. So, a lot of my patients were not able to have their families come to visit them. Their miss their families a lot. We try to engage them. At least they know that there are people who care about them, who know what they're going through.

My daughters and my family are my pillars. Nothing makes me prouder than knowing that my two daughters are serving the nation. My second daughter is currently under scholarship, studying to pursue her own journey in nursing. My eldest daughter works in the police force.

When my friend and family heard that I wanted to become a nurse, they actually described me as very courageous. Because, I actually pursued nursing at a very late age. Even my course-mates in the conversion programme actually called me "Mummy" too.

I spent almost 30 years working, but these 13 months have actually been the most challenging but fruitful months for me. Because I've learnt so much, I have seen so much.

All I want to do is to bring the same comfort, the love, and the support to my patients. Just like how the nurses had done for my mother.

And to me, this is one way of honouring my mother's memory in my heart.
