A bridegroom in southern China who was struck by a car as he fled wedding pranks plans to sue the friends who tormented him as part of the traditional and notorious male rite. Traditionally known as 'nao hun' (闹婚 Nào hūn).

While most men put up with wedding day hazing, Ai Guangtao hired a lawyer after he was left with a fractured skull and a big financial headache, news website Btime.com said.

Ai, 24, ran across a motorway near his home in Zunyi, southern Guizhou province, on his big day in November to escape "tormenting" by his friends when the accident happened.

In this case of 24-year-old Ai Guangtao, his friends went too far: After throwing eggs, beer, and ink on the groom-to-be as he went to pick up his future wife at her house, they ultimately stripped him to his underwear, taped him to an electric pole, and beat him with a bamboo stick.

Then, the final straw: Ai told a local website that he got fed up when the group poured ink on his face.

They had thrown threw eggs at him, poured beer and ink on him, tied him up with plastic tape to an electric power pole and thrashed him with bamboo, all in the name of creating a carnival atmosphere for his big day.

"I was so tortured on my wedding day that I got angry. They chased me, and I could barely see anything because there was ink all over," Ai was quoted as saying.

"Somehow, I ran to the motorway - even after that one of them was still chasing me."

A car hit him and careered into a barrier. He spent two weeks in hospital with multiple injuries, including a fractured skull.

Police decided Ai was responsible for the accident, and the car owner's insurance company demanded nearly 30,000 yuan (US$4,400) in damages, the website reported.

"Now the insurance company is suing me, so I'll have to sue my friends," Ai said.

Before the legal dispute started, the groom's entourage admitted blame and contributed more than 6,000 yuan (US$860) towards Ai's medical fees.

A tradition that emerged thousands of years ago in China to expel evil spirits, wedding hazing remains popular in many parts of the country despite of widespread criticism in recent years when boisterous spirits got carried away.

Punching and kicking her to the ground while she writhed in agony, her attackers then ripped her clothes off and continued the beating, pulling her hair and kicking her in the breasts and groin.
This took place in a shopping area in the middle of a city and the most amazing thing is not one person stepped in to stop the savage beating.

Angry wives and girlfriends get their revenge on their cheating men by attacking the other woman. People don't tend to get involved because they see it as being an argument of the heart.
The woman was later taken to hospital where she was being treated for cuts, severe bruising and shock after begging someone to call an ambulance.

Besides bridegrooms, their parents, the brides, as well as the bridesmaids can also fall victim to practical jokes, sexual innuendo and humiliation.

As most Chinese couples do, Ai and his wife officially married before their wedding day by registering their union with local authorities. There was no ceremony after he recovered from the hazing.

According to local news reports, Ms. Zhang claimed that she was forced to the ground by at least five men, including the best man. Seven to eight guests groped her body as she was on the ground.
Naohun (闹婚 Nào hūn, literally ‘disturbing a marriage’) has been a long-standing practice since the Han dynasty (221–207 BC). It refers to a series of activities that the wedding couple has to do or undergo by the request of wedding attendants. During the wedding, relatives and friends are expected to "drink and laugh, speak and act without restraint" (杨树达,"汉代婚丧礼俗考" Yáng shù dá, "hàn dài hūn sāng lǐ sú kǎo" - "A Study of the Wedding Funeral Ceremony in the Han Dynasty") to ensure a lively wedding atmosphere. It is also a sign of friendship.

However, Ms. Zhang proved that she is not a woman to mess with and reported the incident to police.
Netizens expressed their thoughts over Weibo, where the video had gone viral (via Daily Mail):
She must report it to police. It could not be settled amicably.
I was so grateful to know that the bridesmaid had reported it to police.
They should pay the price for their actions.
