RUMOURS may be part and parcel of showbiz, but the one allegation Hong Kong actress Kate Tsui,
徐子珊 (Xú zǐ shān), will not take lying down is being called a kept woman.

Having been embroiled (Involve deeply) in such a scandal before, the 34-year-old called such accusations "ridiculous", saying: "It's an insult to my character, and especially damaging for a woman's reputation."

Gossip emerged three years ago when a Hong Kong publication reported that the former beauty queen was spotted dining with a sugar daddy, and that she had moved into an upmarket HK$15-million (S$2.4-million) property - all of which the actress flatly denied. The candid Tsui, however, said that she has received such an indecent proposal from a mysterious caller.

"A woman on the other end of the line asked me out for coffee to talk about a job offer, dropping hints of what it (would entail). She asked me to name my price. Of course, I rejected it."

Tsui, who has performed stunts on set, and fellow actor and judge Ruco Chan were in town to judge this year's TVB8 International Chinese Kung Fu Championship, held at Resorts World Sentosa on Sunday. The title was claimed by Chinese contestant Li Yan, 24.

Unlike Tsui, the 36-year-old Chan has not received offers to be a "kept man". The TVB hunk joked: "If I get an offer to be a kept man, it must mean I have market value. I can make money with my looks."

Though Tsui accepts that rumours are par for the course in the entertainment industry, she said that they can be detrimental to her love life. She said with a laugh: "I'll just wait for Mr Right to come along and explain to him when the time comes."

One might expect the stunning actress to be able to find her Prince Charming at the drop of a hat, but Tsui lamented (
regret) that she's still holding out for the one.

She said neverously: "This is first time I am performing Bollywood dance, after learning for 1 hour. Very nervous but need to perform professionally. I used to jump hip hop with jazz and practice recently Argentine tango. Today's costume is too sexy, until I am afraid to eat breakfast and has pot belly. (Fear of losing to Melanie?) I will be compared to the truly professional and beautiful Melanie, but I am only a junior."

"Women should have standards and have the right to choose the guy they want," said Tsui. The actress' checklist for her ideal man is surprisingly simple - one who will make her happy and has a sense of responsibility.

And no handsome guys, please. She said: "They don't give girls a sense of security."

When asked if she has met her perfect partner, she said: "If I met the one, I wouldn't be here doing an interview. I'm not very career-minded and I might just quit showbiz after getting married."

Still, one wonders if she minds being branded a "leftover woman" - a term that describes women in their 30s who have been left on the shelf.

Interestingly, Tsui will play a role similar to that in real life - a successful career woman with no man in her life - in an upcoming TVB romantic comedy, My Prime Lady. It is slated for a year-end release and depicts the lives of single Hong Kong women.

POET Christine Chia launched her first book of poetry, The Law Of Second Marriages, at the Singapore Writers' Festival in 2011 to much critical acclaim.

The 34-year-old English Literature teacher will be launching her second book of poetry, tentatively titled Skip The Happy Families, Please, this year.

In the fourth part of this series on good role models for English, My Paper speaks to the author and teacher about using the dictionary on the go, writing concisely and why one should be reading instead of playing Candy Crush while commuting.

Unfortunately, each generation has to relearn this same lesson.

Where do you find inspiration to write poetry?
My first book was based partly on my own family, with some fictional elements. I also widened the scope to comment indirectly on family life and society. After all, the family is, very often, the most powerful social unit.

I was also inspired and encouraged to write by Cyril Wong, a famous local author. He is a supportive, informal mentor who gives detailed feedback on my work.

One of the tips for the Speak Good English Movement this year is "Use English-language resources to get it right". Which resource has been indispensable to you in your writing?
The dictionary, no doubt.

I use a mobile app from dictionary.com on my phone. It is free and good enough.

Half the people in Singapore probably have smartphones, so there's no excuse not to check the dictionary. It only takes a minute now, compared to the past, when I had to plough through the thick, unabridged Longman version.

If you use the dictionary often enough, it becomes a habit.

Sometimes, you might also discover that certain words have several meanings. This is useful for poetry, since it tends to be very dense and plays on double, and even triple, meanings.

Say-The-Magic-Words

Some of my students try to write excessively complicated sentences, and they use words that are wrong because they don't understand what the words really mean. It's an attempt to appear more sophisticated, which often backfires.

When I need to use a difficult word, I will use it, but if I can express (what I want to say) using a simpler word, I'd rather do that.

Using a difficult or simpler word can impact the message of what we are saying. Difficult words maybe wrong because we don't understand what that words really mean. It's an attempt to appear more sophisticated but could convey the wrong message.

What is your pet peeve when it comes to the use of English?
I don't like SMS spelling, it's very annoying.

Take the word "haz": It's not efficient because it has the same number of letters as the word "has", which it is supposed to replace.

Annoying English Word

Instead of trying to write many words with as few letters as possible, why not try using fewer words?

Tell us about a funny language slip-up that you've encountered in the classroom.

I think students are so stressed by exams that, sometimes, they can't spell the word "public", which comes out as "pubic" instead!

Another tip from the movement is "Always check, then double-check". Have you ever regretted not checking?
At work, I was given a standard e-mail message with a lengthy text that was recycled from the year before. I assumed that it was accurate and forwarded it to several external parties.

I realised later that the content about the year had not been updated. It was embarrassing and I wish I'd checked.

This illustrates how being concise is immensely important, because an e-mail message that is too long can discourage people from reading it.

Writing and teaching must take up the bulk of your time. Where do you find the time to read?
I have a to-do list in my phone that reminds me to set aside 30 to 60 minutes each day for reading.

I don't have a television set at home, because I don't want my social life to be dictated by a TV schedule. I really don't have much time, since work takes up about 10 hours of my day, and I need to fit in time to write, exercise, catch up with friends and sleep.

I get a lot of pleasure from reading. There is no substitute for trying to read a piece of difficult work; it's the intellectual equivalent of training for and running a marathon.

Your body becomes very different after training and running, and, likewise, reading a complex work will change you.

In Singapore, people play Candy Crush on their phones during their commute. The time spent on your daily commute can be put to better use by doing something productive, like reading.

As listening to good spoken English can help you (improve your English), those who drive can listen to audio books.

If you're running the "happiest 5km on the planet" next month, you might just spot former Miss Singapore Universe Lynn Tan in the race.

The 25-year-old is the ambassador for The Color Run Singapore, an untimed race where participants are sprinkled with coloured powder at every 1km interval.

My Paper speaks to Ms Tan about the race, her fitness regime and how she motivates herself.

What is your workout routine?
I try to run once or twice a week for half an hour, and lift light weights to tone up. I go for walks outside my house and maintain a healthy diet.

Why are fitness and exercise important?
I placed more emphasis on exercising when I joined the Miss Universe Singapore pageant as I wanted to win the Miss Body Beautiful award.

I think that being healthy allows you to enjoy all that life has to offer and live life to the fullest.

I believe that your physical well-being contributes to your mental state of mind; feeling slim and toned makes me feel more confident.

How do you motivate yourself to stick to your workout routine?
I look in the mirror and paint a mental picture of the body I would like to have before starting my exercise.

Do you have any favourite locations to exercise?
I like to run on a treadmill in air-conditioned places. Singapore is too hot and the recent haze (made it unhealthy to) run outside.

What precautions do you take when exercising?
I don't overdo it.

As the ambassador for The Color Run Singapore, what are your hopes for the event?
I hope that we will raise awareness and funds for Project Happy Feet, which is a Singapore-based not-for-profit organisation set up to empower underprivileged youth and children in developing countries.

Is this your first race? How are you preparing for it?
This is my second race. My first run was the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge last year. I haven't been (preparing for it any) differently.

How can The Color Run make an impact on Singaporeans' health and fitness?
As we are expecting 16,000 participants, a 5km run could be invigorating and refreshing for everyone.

For those who run regularly, it will be a breeze.

As for those who don't, perhaps they will enjoy it and it could inspire them to start their own exercise regimes.

Do you have any fitness tips for busy executives?
Watch your diet and weigh yourself once a week.

Be consistent with your exercise and get a workout buddy so that you can motivate each other.

Try to work out at a time when you have the most energy, because fitness experts say that (exercising at such a time will) yield the best results.

Quoting Mother Teresa paid off for Miss Lynn Tan who went on to win the Miss Universe Singapore title yesterday (Sunday) evening.

When a contest judge, local actress Rebecca Lim, asked her what her strongest selling point would be as Singapore’s ambassador, Miss Tan said: “I will be the modern Singapore woman, beautiful, strong and ready to stand for what I believe in.

Yet, I will hold on to my values that have brought me here.

She ended her answer with the quote from Mother Teresa: "Reach high, for stars lie hidden in your soul. Dream deep, for every dream precedes the goal."
