There are a lot of things people have preached to you about fitness - that sit ups equal six-packs, cardio burns most calories, and carrying weights will turn you into the Hulk. These so called rules have been repeated so many times that many of us have accepted them as facts, but the truth is, a lot of them isn't.

Myth #1: Strength training will make you huge
Strength training will not bulk you up unless you're on the road to bulking up. Its not easy to bulk up - it requires a diet that will make you bulk up too. Strength training is a great way to burn calories, tone muscles and create and reveal definition.

Resistance training may be intense and can come with some discomfort, pain is not a necessity for a kickass workout. If you are feeling pain, you should stop and seek help from a fitness professional.

Myth #2: No pain, no gain
If you tend to think that if your muscles don't hurt, you're not having a quality workout. This is not the case at all. Resistance training may be intense and can come with some discomfort, pain is not a necessity for a kickass workout. If you are feeling pain, you should stop and seek help from a fitness professional.

While sit ups (crunches) are effective for you to feel the burn, your core workout routine should consist of exercises that challenge the entire abdominal area.

Myth #3: Sit ups are the best move for six-pack abs
While crunches are effective for you to feel the burn, your core workout routine should consist of exercises that challenge the entire abdominal area, including your lower back which helps promote a healthy spine and prevent injury.

It's not the amount of time or the number of days you put into the gym, it's what you're doing while you're there that will have the most impact on your results.

Myth #4: If you can't work out regularly, it's not worth going to the gym at all
It's not the amount of time or the number of days you put into the gym, it's what you're doing while you're there that will have the most impact on your results.

Cardio is the best way to burn calories

PHOTO: Cardio is the best way to burn calories
Functional strength training has been scientifically proven to promote healthy muscle building and burn hundreds of calories in as little as 30 minutes.
You finish a strength training workout, your body continue to burn calories and build strength for a full 24 hours.

Myth #5: Cardio is the best way to burn calories
While cardiovascular training on machines has many benefits and should be a part of your workout routine, functional strength training has been scientifically proven to promote healthy muscle building and burn hundreds of calories in as little as 30 minutes. Fun fact: your body will stop burning calories at the pace it was while you were on the cardio machine ten minutes after you get off; however, the second you finish a strength training workout, your body continue to burn calories and build strength for a full 24 hours.

It's not how long you workout, but what you do during that time that counts most. After about an hour, your muscle fibres start to break down, and you need to refuel. High intensity interval workout can accomplish more in a shorter span of time.

Myth #6: The longer you workout, the better
It's not how long you workout, but what you do during that time that counts most. Sure, you can work out for two hours, but how much are you really accomplishing? After about an hour, your muscle fibres start to break down, and you need to refuel. Try a high intensity interval workout and see how much more you can get in a shorter span of time.
