Hong Kong’s Charmaine Sheh (佘诗曼 Shé shī màn) was crowned best actress for the third time at the TVB Awards on Jan 14, while actor Moses Chan (陈豪 Chén háo) won best actor again, after 16 years.

Sheh, 48, was the hot favourite, with her role as aggressive news anchor Sister Man in The Queen Of News winning praise since the drama aired in November.

She is the first to receive the award thrice, after winning for Maidens’ Vow in 2006 and Line Walker in 2014.

The actress – famous for TV series such as War And Beauty (2004) and Story Of Yanxi Palace (2018) – recently returned to TVB after seven years to star in The Queen Of News. The drama revolves around the power struggle between factions led by two leading news anchors, played by Sheh and actor Kenneth Ma.

Sheh also won Malaysia’s most favourite actress and Greater Bay Area’s most favourite actress for the role.

She said in an interview that it was an unforgettable night and a high point in her life

With eight wins, The Queen Of News was the big winner at the ceremony held in Macau.

It nabbed the coveted best drama series, as well as best supporting actress for Samantha Ko; best TV song for Crystal Clear, performed by teenage singer Gigi Yim; and Malaysia’s most favourite actor for Ma.

Meanwhile, Chan, 52, won best actor for his role as a drug lord in crime drama Narcotics Heroes. This is his first best actor win since his triumph with Heart Of Greed in 2007.

Moses Chan was hugged by his weeping wife when he went onstage. He thanked her in his acceptance speech for looking after the household so he could focus on acting. The couple have three children aged seven to 10.

Best supporting actor went to Jazz Lam for his role as a policeman in the crime drama The Invisibles, while most improved male artiste went to Mark Ma, who has been in the industry for 18 years.

Third time's the charm: Rare vulture takes off into the sky

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

That's what a rare cinereous vulture stuck in Singapore did — it took off into the sky on the third attempt on Monday (Jan 10).

Even though the vulture encountered a murder of crows after taking flight, the bird of prey managed to break free and fly away, Lianhe Zaobao reported.

The release took place at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve at noon, with the vulture flying and gaining height before landing at a nearby farm.

It then took off and was last seen flying over the canopy of a forest a distance away, the National Parks Board (NParks) and Mandai Wildlife Group told AsiaOne on Wednesday.

"For the vulture, there were additional considerations for its flight test compared to other species," they explained.

"Given the large size of the bird, the flight tests had to be conducted outdoors in a large open space and allow for easy retrieval of the bird, if needed.

"The location also had to be relatively flat to avoid risks of injury as its flying capability had not been established then."

NParks said it will monitor the area until the scavenger is able to continue its journey to its wintering grounds.

On Dec 30, the vulture was brought to Jurong Bird Park's bird hospital for veterinary care after it was found sitting weakly on the ground at Cornwall Gardens in Farrer Road.

The first release attempt on Jan 4 proved unsuccessful as the vulture did not get off the ground. It was later taken away for further recuperation.

The cinereous vulture is native to Europe and northern Asia, and this is the first time a sighting has ever been recorded in Singapore.

Its appearance here could be due to strong winds, which affected its migratory movement patterns.
