A superstitious motorist in eastern China who waited for "an auspicious day" to put number plates on his new Porsche has temporarily lost his driving licence and been fined 200 yuan (S＄40).

The driver, surnamed Zhu, was stopped by traffic police officers on a highway in Lishui, Zhejiang province, on Monday night after they noticed his temporary plates had expired on April 26, the Qianjiang Evening News reported.

Zhu told the police he had the new plates in the car, but a fortune-teller had advised him not to put them on straight away

He then drove the car during the Labour Day public holidays last week, forgetting that the temporary licence had expired.

He was fined and 12 points deducted from his driving licence. He will have to retake a test on China's traffic rules to get it back.

A Chinese mother, desperate for her son to come home for the upcoming Lunar New Year, has placed a full page ad in a newspaper in Australia, saying she won't pressure him to get married anymore.

"Dear Peng, I've called you many times but you don't pick up, maybe you will see this," the anonymous mother wrote, according to a copy of the ad provided to CNN by the newspaper.

"Dad and mom won't ever force you to get married anymore, come home for Chinese New Year! From your mom who loves you."

The ad, which appeared on the front page of the Chinese Melbourne Daily on Tuesday, would cost $2,796.80 Australian dollars ($2465), according to its advertising rate card.

The newspaper, which serves the city's Chinese community, has a circulation of 18,000, according to its website.

"We assume from the ad that the mother is from mainland China and her son is living in Melbourne," said Cecil Huang, the paper's editor.

The mother, who lives in Guangzhou had placed the ad after losing contact with her son, reported state-media Xinhua news agency.

Every year around this time, many Chinese prepare to head home for China's most important festival.

But many of the younger generation dread facing family confrontations about their love life.

On the online Chinese forum Tianya.cn, a single man asked for advice on facing his family.

"It's almost that time of the year, how should I explain to my family and relatives that I am single?" a user in Guangzhou "1979xiaozhu" posted.

Many of the replies were telling him to not go home instead.

User "qianlidaiwanwoduxing" wrote: "Going home means they will either arrange blind dates for you or you get scolded."

"This year my mom gave me an ultimatum. One, bring 50,000 yuan, second, bring a wife home. If I don't have both then she said I don't need to come home. What a tragedy," said user "fghjkh84."

Those who can't handle the pressure of nagging parents can rent a boyfriend for the day through China's online shopping giant, Taobao.com.

Rental counterfeit boyfriends come with services such as meeting the parents, shopping and watching movies.

One customer left a satisfied review for her purchase (http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.0.0.vif5GZ&id=36365911026).

"He was very nice and humorous. He knows how to cook and offers to carry things when shopping. Dad and mom are very happy," the anonymous reviewer wrote.

AN ITALIAN historian's hypothesis that Mona Lisa might be a Chinese slave and Leonardo da Vinci's mother - making the 15th century polymath half-Chinese - sent online commentators into a frenzy yesterday.

Angelo Paratico, a Hong Kong-based historian and novelist from Italy, told the South China Morning Post: "On the back of Mona Lisa, there is a Chinese landscape and even her face looks Chinese."

Chinese web users expressed astonishment and disbelief yesterday, posting dozens of parodies of the painting, with faces from Chinese comedians to British actor Rowan Atkinson grafted over her delicate features.

Little is known about Caterina, the mother of the artist, writer, mathematician and inventor, and the identity of the sitter for the portrait hanging in Paris' Louvre museum has long been a matter of debate.

Mr Paratico, who is finishing a book entitled Leonardo Da Vinci: A Chinese Scholar Lost In Renaissance Italy, cited Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud's 1910 assumption that the painting was inspired by the artist's mother.

"One wealthy client of da Vinci's father had a slave called Caterina. After 1452 - da Vinci's date of birth - she disappeared from the documents," he told the paper.

The evidence for a Chinese connection appears to be slight, with Mr Paratico saying he was sure "up to a point" that da Vinci's mother was from the Orient. "To make her an oriental Chinese, we need to use a deductive method," he added.

Many posters on China's Twitter-like Sina Weibo were incredulous (unable to believe).

"I'm so sad that you thought I'm a foreigner!" wrote one, with an image of a frowning Mona Lisa holding two rolls of toilet paper and blowing her nose. "I'd rather be from wherever I am loved."

Another user replaced her features with unlikely faces ranging from Chinese male comedian Zhao Benshan to British actor Rowan Atkinson, to a grimacing robot holding a Mona Lisa mask.

The topic had been viewed more than four million times and triggered 160,000 postings by midday yesterday.

"I now understand why her smile looks so mysterious and concealed - it's typically Chinese," said another poster.

The happiest times within my life are those periods that I am been totally single. The definition of "totally single" is that you do not have someone that you are interested in in your heart.

Within those time, you are so free that you do nothing but enjoy yourself. However, those periods would never last for long, because soon enough you will meet someone and get interested in. Why? Because we are human. And being totally single means your heart is available.

Admit it, when a person's heart is available, it means that it is always ready for a new relationship, and it would be always seeking no matter whether you want it or not.

So that the notion that no love equal to no worry is wrong. No love means that you will run into a new situation that totally unpredictable.....no love means that you may have to face the big trouble later in the future.....

Personally I have reached both the highest point of happiness and sadness while being in love ... Maybe its because of release of some hormones within the body..

Its because the emotional bonding that you develop with that person that makes you forget all your worries for some time.

The lowest point of sadness: It is heaven on earth when things turns out well. But if something steps in the way, or does not work out, it can feel like hell.

However, we should not love someone in order for us to become happy. The essence of love is by loving others more than oneself, wishing to be one with them, and devoting oneself to their happiness.

Once they are happy we can feel their happiness as ours.

It seems to me that I am truly happiest when I have regained what I had lost or gained something I never fully believed that I could obtain. For example; I feel pretty happy just being alive because it was seriously threatened a while ago.

I feel happy when I can walk without a walker - that would not have pleased me 6 months ago.

I also remember being incomparably happy when I got my scholarship for my MA (maybe because no one else in my family had ever had the opportunity to get a degree.)
