The White House on Wednesday confirmed the venue of the US-North Korea summit in Singapore.

In a Twitter post, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders revealed that the meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will take place at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island. A day earlier, Sanders told reporters that the meeting will start at 9am (Singapore time) on June 12.

While the summit getting back on track has fueled hopes for concrete results between Pyongyang and Washington, denuclearizing North Korea appears likely to become drawn out and involve political processes within the US.

On Tuesday (US time), US politicians said that any agreement the US reaches with North Korea will be subjected to review and approval by the Congress.

“The president, the vice president and the secretary of state have all told me separately that their intent is to put together a treaty that will be submitted to the United States Senate under the constitution for certification,” Sen. James Risch was quoted as saying on Tuesday by US media.

Risch’s comments follow on the heels of Democrat politicians’ letter listing conditions they deem acceptable in reaching any agreement with North Korea.

Conditions include dismantling nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, ending enrichment of uranium for weapons purposes and permanently dismantling North Korea’s nuclear weapons infrastructure.

SPECULATIONS
With no precedence to draw comparisons from, speculations are rising on every aspect of the summit, from Kim’s journey to Singapore to where the two leaders will pose for photographs.

The sprawling, secluded Capella Hotel in Sentosa has been named the summit venue, and its 30 acres of lawn and rainforest would provide a lush backdrop for a historic handshake. The hotel, which opened in 2009, was restored from buildings that used to house the British officers of the Royal Artillery and their families in the 1880s. It was designed by renowned British architect Norman Foster, has 112 guestrooms and a presidential manor. It is owned by the Kwee family of Pontiac Land Group.

Despite repeated denials from Seoul’s presidential office, news reports and rumors that Cheong Wa Dae is making preparations for a three-way summit in Singapore persist.

Such rumors, fueled in part by President Moon Jae-in’s hopes to sign a peace treaty, have gained traction in recent weeks, with Cheong Wa Dae and Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials being sighted in Singapore.

Cheong Wa Dae, however, maintains that South Korean officials in Singapore are making preparations for later diplomatic events.

With China having declared that it will play a role in Korean Peninsula issues, the Chinese government is featuring in many of the speculations being floated by the South Korean media.

According to local news reports citing unnamed sources, China is planning measures that will accentuate its relations with North Korea.

A local news agency reported Wednesday that Beijing is considering providing an escort of fighter jets for Kim’s plane while it travels through China’s airspace.

China is also said to be preparing for the possibility of Kim stopping over, and plans to dispatch a working-level delegation to Singapore to monitor the summit, and the impact its results may have on China.

As the walk President Moon Jae-in took with Kim during their April 27 summit made a big impression, some local news outlets have raised the possibility of Kim and Trump recreating a similar scene.

A local news agency on Wednesday reported that expectations for Kim and Trump to take a walk along the beach near Capella Hotel is rising among “some circles,” without elaborating.

Another point of interest for South Korean media appears to be whether hamburgers will feature on the menu of any of the meals served as an official part of the summit.

Referring to Trump’s comment during his election campaign that US presidents should “be eating a hamburger on a conference table” in summit meetings rather than costly state dinners, local media have coined the term “hamburger luncheon conference.”

Singapore’s first Unesco World Heritage Site, the Botanic Gardens are the nation’s pride and joy, and the jewel in its crown is the 3ha orchid garden. Though some parts of it are closed for a revamp, the VIP Orchids section, where blooms are named after visiting foreign dignitaries, could make an ideal setting for a picture commemorating this meeting of minds.

We will note the Cloud Forest’s many suspension bridges might be ideal for a pair that have kept the world hanging over the past few weeks regarding the date of the summit.

Realistically, this ageing mall near Selegie Road is not diplomatic backdrop material. But its name has inspired some netizens to vote it the ideal summit location. 'Instant bond' between first ladies of two Koreas grabs attention

Ri Sol-ju, the wife of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, made her much-anticipated appearance at Panmunjeom at 6:18 p.m. on Friday. She did not accompany her husband when he came for talks with South Korean President Moon Jae-in earlier in the day, and her attendance at the summit dinner remained unconfirmed until afternoon.

Upon her arrival, Ri was greeted by Kim Jung-sook, the wife of South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

It was the first time a North Korean first lady had ever met her South Korean counterpart.

Kim, who is some 30 years Ri's senior, extended a warm welcome and took her to the Peace House, where the summit had been taking place since earlier in the day. Ri was wearing a pastel pink dress, while Kim was wearing a powder-blue dress coat. Local media outlets interpreted the choice of their dress colors as representing spring - the season that symbolizes a new beginning, hope and peace.

The theme of spring was used repeatedly throughout the summit dinner. A dessert named "spring of the Korean people" was served; it featured a pastel-blue unified Korea flag on a white background with decorative flowers on mango mousse. Also during the dinner, a South Korean child sang "Spring in My Hometown," a popular Korean folk song written in the 1920s, well before the division of the two Koreas.

And the two first ladies, in spite of seeing each other for the first time, seemed to have bonded well after the spring-themed banquet event.

The two were holding hands as they left the Peace House after the dinner, and did not let go of each other's hands until they reached an outdoor property where they watched a special performance celebrating the historic summit together.

Ri and Kim also exchanged hugs before the North Korean first lady and her husband left for Pyongyang following the summit in Panmunjeom.

"It was also as touching to see the first ladies bond on live TV, just as it was to see President Moon and Kim Jong-un meeting each other for the first time," said Park Jin-ee, a working professional in Seoul.

"It was almost as if watching a mother and her daughter enjoying their time together."

Park Hyun-ah, another Seoul resident, said seeing Kim and Ri felt different from seeing the South Korean first lady with her counterparts in other countries, such as US first lady Melania Trump.

"I think our first lady Kim has an outgoing personality, and she usually bonds with people very well," Park told The Korea Herald. "But what touched me was that Kim did not need an interpreter to communicate with Ri, unlike when she was with first ladies from other countries. It just reminded me that the two Koreas used to share many things together."

Kim 62, met her husband President Moon Jae-in while attending Kyung Hee University in Seoul. They married in 1981 and have two children. Her friendly and approachable nature has earned her the nickname "Happy Mrs. Jung-sook."

Ri, who is believed to be in her late 20s, is reported to have studied music and singing in China. She also visited South Korea back in 2005 for the Asian Athletics Championships in Incheon as part of a cheering squad. It has been reported that Ri worked as a singer before marrying the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. According to the South's spy agency, Ri and Kim have three children together.

"You two have a similar educational background," South Korean President Moon Jae-in told his wife and Ri before the summit dinner. Kim was also present during the conversation.

"I hope you can collaborate on cultural and artistic exchanges between the two Koreas in future."
