Brazilian Carnival - an annual festival, which takes place 40 days before Easter and followed by Lent. It is launched over the weekend in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.

The Carnival is one of the biggest national holiday of the country. It has some differences from the carnivals in Europe and in other Latin American countries. The first day of competition between the best Brazilian samba schools are held in a special rebuilt Sambodromo " Marquis de Saukai ."

Holiday ends on 'Fat' Tuesday - the last day before the 40-day Lent. And on 'Ash' Wednesday the medalists of the carnival competitions will be determined. Dancers go to church to sprinkle ashes as a sign of repentance and humility.

Carnival in Mazatlán began with the burning of effigies representing a Frenchwoman, Florence Cassez. She is the woman in a Mexican prison for kidnapping, and in January 23 she was sent to France. Mazatlan Residents felt that burning the effigy will secure prosperity for the whole year.
