Brandon, one of our pediatric residents, was born 28 years ago in our NICU--then just 29 weeks old. Vilma was his primary care nurse. Fast forward nearly 30 years, and Vilma recognized Brandon’s name while he was rounding at our hospital. What a memory! Here’s a special look at them both then and now.

It seemed a stroke of fate when one nurse from Palo Alto, California got to reunite with one of the premature babies she cared for 28 years ago in the very same hospital where it all started.

Vilma Wong, a nurse at the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford, recently crossed paths with Brandon Seminatore, a medical resident at the hospital who's training to be a child neurologist.

Twenty years ago, when Seminatore was born, he weighed only 2 pounds and 6 ounces. As reported by The East Bay Times on Sept. 3, Seminatore spent more than 40 days in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with a breathing tube, where he was cared for by Wong.

Dr Brandon Seminatore, 28, is currently completing his residency at the same hospital - where he was born at 29 weeks in April 1990.
For a month after being born, Dr Seminatore was looked after by Wong in the NICU because he was born so prematurely.
Now, however, the pair have reunited.

The encounter between the two was shared on Facebook last Aug. 16 by the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford. In the post, the page shared a photo of a young Wong cradling the infant Seminatore on her lap. In another photo, Wong and Seminatore can be seen posing next to each other inside the hospital, both wearing their scrubs.

"A chance encounter at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford has led to a heart warming reunion between nurse and patient," the page stated. "Brandon, one of our pediatric residents, was born 28 years ago in our NICU - then just 29 weeks old. Vilma was his primary care nurse."

Almost 30 years have passed since that fateful moment, but Wong was far from forgetting the little baby she cared for. As per report, all medical residents were required to check in at the nurse's station before examining the premature babies in the NICU. It was here when Wong spotted Seminatore and asked him who he was.

"His last name sounded very familiar," Wong was quoted as saying. "I kept asking where he was from and he told me that he was from San Jose, California, and that, as a matter of fact, he was a premature baby born at our hospital. I then got very suspicious because I remember being the primary nurse to a baby with the same last name.

I asked him if his dad was a police officer and there was a big silence and then he asked me if I was Vilma.

I said yes.

Seminatore’s mother has asked him to look out for a nurse called Vilma in the NICU, but the young doctor had presumed she would have already retired.

When Vilma recognised my name, I remembered the photos my parents had shown me and it truly sunk in that I was one of these babies. I’ve come full-circle and I’m taking care of babies with the nurse that took care of me.

Seminatore texted his parents as soon as he and Wong had made the discovery, and they replied straight away with the picture from 28 years earlier.

And Wong was equally overwhelmed by the discovery, saying, “I was in shock initially but overjoyed to know that I took care of him almost 30 years ago and now he’s as a paediatric resident to the same population he was part of when he was born.

Seminatore, however, looks far removed from the tiny premature infant that once had been under Wong's care. Today, he stands at 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighs 134 pounds, although still bears the same eyes and expression. For him, meeting Wong was a "surreal experience."

Seminatore said, "She cares deeply for her patients, to the point that she was able to remember a patient's name almost three decades later.''

As for Wong? She considers meeting Seminatore for the second time the payoff of her mission. She said in the report, "As a nurse, it's kind of like your reward."

More often than not, healthcare personnel, nurses, and doctors  are the unsung heroes effieciently working away from the glamorous world.
PHOTO: More often than not, healthcare personnel, nurses, and doctors are the unsung heroes effieciently working away from the glamorous world. At the most difficult moments they are always there with their tender care and loving heart. During our darkest moment they offer their whatever available sunshine without hesitation, and walk with us all the way out of the darkness. They offer their best encouragement and comfort during these difficult times.

However and whatever tough it maybe their actions are always the same - passionate and courageous, braving through the dangerous world of lethal viruses and bacteria. Despite the dangerous mission, they perform the sacrificing front-line duties without second thought, without complaining, and without batting an eyelid.

The true guardians of the world embarking on the well-being of yet another patient, even when at the moment when they are suppose to receive their rewards. They just lightly mention that "it is kind of like your reward". They are even willing to step aside from the limelight of glamour and continue to quietly support the needs of the healthcare industry. 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, . . . years, after years, they stoically standby ready to serve at the moment notice. In hospital and dangerous area, you will see them here, you will see them there, and you will see them everywhere.

May God's blessings descend upon them, keeping them safe, and grant them success in all their endeavours.

Caregivers, even in the lowest moment there is still hope because in Hannah's prayer, she said: "for the Lord is a God who knows, and by him deeds are weighed." When there is no one besides you - we have our Lord and other healthcare personnel, nurses and doctors. And those who stumbled are armed with strength (1 Samuel 2:3-4). You will be transformed into God's children who people trusted and relied upon.

Chinese doctors removed a one-meter-long cable from a man's penis after it was inserted to relieve itchiness caused by prostatitis.

The unnamed pensioner inserted the meter-long phone charging cable to relieve the itch, but it became tangled in the bladder on the way out.

According to a report by Chinese site Kanka News via Daily Mirror, a knot started to cause bleeding when the man tried to pull the cable out. He was rushed to the hospital on March 30 for medical attention.

Prostatitis causes an inflammation of the prostate gland. This leads to the development of an itch in the urethra or the passageway where urine exits the body. The itch would disappear over time once the inflammation has been treated.

Urologist Dr Gao Zhanfeng at the Dalian Hospital in northeast China found the knot in the bladder after a scan.

Dr Gao removed the five millimeter wide cable by cutting it up in sections using a laser. Fortunately, the man did not use anything metallic, the doctor said, otherwise it would have punctured the man's bladder.

When the man was asked whether he sterilized the cable, he said it was roughly washed under running water. Nevertheless, he claims the experience bore a lesson well-learned.

Are you one of the many who love pasta so much, that you go back and refill your plate when you got the chance, because it's just too delicious? If you're on a diet, you may not worry too much about your pasta intake anymore, as it may even help you lose some pounds.

A new study found that even though carbohydrates have a reputation for contributing to weight gain, pasta may actually be an exception. This was found by researchers at St. Michael's Hospital in Canada, and the study was published in the BMJ Open journal.

Some 2,500 people, who follow a low glycemic index (GC) diet, participated in the study by eating 3.3 servings of pasta a week. The result? In a span of 12 weeks, they lost half a kilo.

The glycemic index is used to determine how food has an impact on blood sugar levels. High GI foods include potatoes and white rice which can make you crave sooner; low GI foods like milk keep you full longer.

The results showed that "the consumption of pasta in the context of a low-GI dietary patterns does not cause harm and may even lead to spontaneous weight loss." The researchers concluded that it was not pasta alone that made the participants lose weight; their low GI diet was also a factor.

"The study found that pasta didn't contribute to weight gain or increase in body fat," lead author Dr. John Sievenpiper said. "In fact analysis actually showed a small weight loss. So contrary to concerns, perhaps pasta can be part of a healthy diet such as a low GI diet."

'Single all my life, but I'm no less of a woman'

I have been single all my life.

Ah, yes. Being single at a time when you're supposed to be anything but.

Maybe this is a disaster and I'm supposed to be panicking, especially in relation to the fate of my egg cells. But oddly enough, I'm not.

When people ask me about my love life nowadays (and it's sweet they think I have one), I don't know what to say because there really is nothing to tell. I have been single all my life, which is partly why, when I hear prepubescent kids whine about how they haven't found their "forever" yet and how maybe they'll die alone and such, I try my hardest not to laugh in their faces. My darlings, please. You ain't been through nothing yet.

Then again, I'm a peculiar nut, and I may have experienced life (and love) differently from others. It is no secret to many of my friends that my experience of brokenness in the family has led me to be especially guarded when it comes to who I let into my life, much more my heart. I try to work through it, but it's not easy.

Some experiences-especially ones we go through as a child-really do shape us, at our cores, and it is very difficult to weed out that thread from our past and just live without it, because it has come to be part of our very fabric.

Now add to that the fact that I'm strongly introverted, a lover of solitude and freedom, and here you have someone for whom being single is less of a bother and more of a second nature.

I've heard all the romantic cliches, of course, about how maybe I just haven't met "the right person," or how maybe it isn't "the right time."

I've also heard the less dreamy ones, about how maybe I have standards too high for any earthling to meet, or how maybe my calling really is single-blessedness, if not religious life. But my favourite is when someone attempts to explain to me, in psychoanalytical terms and often condescendingly, how I might've been messed up so bad in my childhood that I now have these intimacy and commitment issues to contend with, as if I haven't all but written a psychological report about it.

Now some, all, or none of these explanations may be true. I admit it bothers me at times, but in spite of my own or others' theories, it is beyond me to know at this point exactly why things are the way they are.

Sometimes people, especially those who insist that women stick to the cultural timetable of getting married and settling down at a certain age, seem to demand an explanation for singlehood, as if it were a disease whose etiology needs to be traced for it to be cured. And sometimes I do fall into that line of thinking as well, and I attempt to figure out what could've gone so wrong with me for me to be single at this age.

But of late, I've realised that though I might indeed be cracked in some way, I'm not less of a woman - and certainly not less of a person - just because I'm single. And society shouldn't be making me and other singletons feel otherwise. We need to broaden our definition of an acceptable and respectable way to live. We need to recognise that while finding love, getting married, and raising kids are beneficial for the continuity of the human species, such events are not the only measures of a life worth living, or well-lived.

It is all very fluid, how things are in this world, and all I can say is that I'm just trying to ride it out like everybody else. Currently, I'm working for causes that matter to me, in a field that I love, and that's all there is in my life for now.

If you ask me why I still haven't found anyone or settled down at this point, I don't have the answer. I have speculations, yes, but instead of going through the trouble of explaining all the theories about it, maybe I could just give you a wan smile and say, "I don't know."

It'll be closer to the truth than any other answer I could give you, and it will have to be enough.

Being single can be a blessing in disguise.
PHOTO: Being single can be a blessing in disguise. The fear that we one day may be abandoned and removed may make singles feel unwanted and depressed. We have been warned of many bad endings including losing the privilege of citizenship. But so far every day is a present from Him who creates us. Things are still getting on as fine and we have not yet faced any death threatening situation except that our health are going downhill. By going to Jesus first, I am relieved that I need not bear all the burdens and misfortunes. He will plan something just right for me, and for everybody.
Being 'unloved' is indeed shameful but although I may not be what I am suppose to be, this is the best I can be. I am still an ordinary person, but with extraordinary circumstances. I still have hope and aspiration being in relationship with somebody. He is Jesus Christ, our Creator and Son of God. His acceptance over shadow the rejections by the world. It is in Him that we find perfect rest and fulfilment for our soul. This is the achievement of something desired, promised, or predicted.
