If you're asked to describe nasi lemak, the last thing you may say is "healthy".

In a surprising twist, the popular Singapore dish has been recognised as one of 10 most healthy international breakfasts by Time Magazine.

The article on Tuesday described nasi lemak as "supremely delicious".

"Yes, there's a bit more fat than is good for you (eat less rice to reduce), but it's balanced with lots of manganese, protein, and carbs (carbohydrate).

"The chili in the sambal also boosts the metabolism (depending which nutritionist you talk to)," according to the article.

Dietitians the world over will likely frown upon the richness of the coconut milk, where more that half the fat comes from saturated fat, which is harmful for the heart.

Also on the list was the Turkish breakfast spread featuring olives, tomato, white cheese, eggs and sausages as well as the Israeli shakshouka in which eggs are poached in a tomato and vegetable sauce, reported The Star Online.

NEW YORK
NASI lemak, the staple Malay rice dish, has been listed as one of the 10 most healthy breakfasts in the world by New York-based Time magazine.

"Breakfast is perhaps the best excuse to dive into supremely delicious nasi lemak," globe-trotting journalist Mike Dunphy wrote in the article, which appeared on Times' website on Monday.

The dish is described as rice "soaked and cooked in coconut milk" and "garnished with anchovies, cucumbers, roasted peanuts, hard-boiled egg and spicy sambal sauce".

"There's a bit more fat than is good for you (eat less rice to reduce) but it's balanced with lots of manganese, protein and carbs (carbohydrate)," wrote Mr Dunphy.

"It's traditionally wrapped in a banana leaf but that's just a renewable place setting," added the freelancer, who is fond of sorting foods into categories and ranking them by taste or nutritional value.

Malaysia's Astro Awani online television said the list gives people who love the dish more reasons to indulge in it.

Lovers of nasi lemak had often been warned about its high calories - said to be at least 500, Astro Awani pointed out.

Nasi lemak was ranked No. 9 on the list, which is topped by Turkey's "meze-style dishes", followed by Israel's shakshouka.

Mr Dunphy called the Turkish breakfast "heart-healthy" as the dishes feature olives - a good source of monounsaturated fat - and antioxidant catechins, which come in the tea.

South India's upma, described as a "thick concoction made from dry roasted semolina infused with green chillies, cilantro and turmeric", was placed 10th.
