WHEN 33-year-old Vero Lo went for a morning stroll with her two-year-old son yesterday morning, she was in for a pleasant surprise.
Colourful Post-it notes were pasted over the mailboxes at her Housing Board block in Woodlands Avenue 6, each with a handwritten message that thanked the residents for being good neighbours.
One of them read: "Thank you for being a kind neighbour."
The notes were signed off only with a hashtag, #LoveOthers14.
Some mail slots were stuffed with gummy bear packets.
"Never before have I experienced such a gesture, so I was a bit wary at first," said the information technology engineer.
But she changed her mind after reading the thoughtful messages. "It made my day," she said.
Ms Lo was not the only one who was taken by surprise.
On Friday, similar handwritten notes attached to cookie packets were left on the windscreens of at least 50 parked cars in Compassvale Lane, near Block 205D, according to a report on citizen journalism website Stomp.
These "surprises" have also made their way into other residential areas, such as an HDB block in Elias Road, and educational institutions.
These were Serangoon Junior College, Nanyang Junior College, Singapore Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic.
The gifts appear to have been given out by members of Heart of God Church, going by an online search.
Speaking to My Paper yesterday, Member of Parliament for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC Teo Ser Luck commended the movement for "promoting neighbourliness".
"It's a fun way of putting a smile on someone's face amid the hustle (push roughly) and bustle (move in an energetic and busy manner) of living these days," he said.
Zainal Sapari, a member of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Social and Family Development, said that such initiatives go a long way in building "a more gracious society".
"Such gestures should definitely be welcomed, if what is being advocated (supported) are universal values," he said.
But the Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC MP said that the organisation in charge should seek permission from schools before carrying out such campaigns there, so as to "avoid misunderstandings", as the campaigns may carry religious connotations.

The odourless, colourless and slightly salty drug - almost undetectable when mixed into a drink - is commonly used to render victims physically incapacitated and vulnerable to sexual assault.
But a new detection kit for the drug may be available in a year, thanks to the discovery of a fluorescent GHB-detecting sensor, called GHB Orange, by a research team from the National University of Singapore (NUS).
"Our hope is to produce a simple device that can be used easily in real life, to detect whether there is an illegal drug in your drink," said NUS Faculty of Science's Professor Chang Young Tae, who led the team.

The kit, he added, can help prevent drug-facilitated sexual assaults.
The liquid sensor changes colour within 30 seconds when it detects the presence of GHB under a typical club's ultraviolet lighting. When mixed in a beverage that contains enough GHB to affect one's consciousness - typically about 1g in 100ml - the sensor's fluorescent orange colour will fade visibly.
At a media briefing yesterday, Prof Chang said the team plans to work with industry partners on a portable test kit for consumers in a year's time. This could take the form of a stirrer or a smartphone-aligned device.
He aims to price it at $1 for 10 tests.

In 2010, a 20-year-old American exchange student, Mr Scott Jared Monat, collapsed and died here of heart failure after an adverse reaction to alcohol and five kinds of drugs, including GHB.
While national statistics on date rape are not readily available, women's rights organisation Aware received about 49 calls regarding acquaintance rape (rape by a person who is known to the victim) last year, and 36 such calls in 2012.

THE heavy rain that hit many parts of Singapore yesterday was greeted with unbridled joy by Singaporeans sick of the recent dry spell.
The National Environment Agency's (NEA's) three-hour Nowcast, which tracks rainfall patterns, showed thundery showers across the island. This followed light showers on Saturday.
On Facebook, one user called Melly Mel wrote: "All the plants are rejoicing in this rain. 'Finally some water,' they say!"
Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean posted a photo of himself standing in the rain: "Yeah! It's pouring in Pasir Ris Park after our community run this morning. Nice to get wet!" The post had garnered more than 730 likes as of 10pm yesterday.

The rain also cleared the haze. As of 8pm, the 24-hour PSI was in the 20 to 31 range.
The NEA said the showers were heaviest in the eastern and southern parts of the island, which received the least rainfall during the dry spell.
Showers yesterday also affected parts of peninsular Malaysia and central Sumatra, including Riau province, and no hot spots were detected in those areas because of extensive cloud cover.
Thanks to "improved conditions", the air quality for today will be moderate, and Singaporeans can expect thundery showers in the late morning and afternoon over the next few days.
The NEA had earlier said that more rainfall can be expected as Singapore heads into the inter-monsoon period. Even so, total rainfall for this month is likely to be below the March long-term average of 185.9mm.
Local weather researcher Winston Chow said the fluctuating weather conditions are not likely to continue, given Singapore's climate for this time of the year, as the weather context for the next few months is "favourable for humid, cloudy, and possibly rainy conditions, especially in the afternoons".
The dry spell started in mid-January, with February setting the record for being the driest month in Singapore since 1869.
National water agency PUB has been topping up Singapore's 17 reservoirs with Newater since January.
Yesterday's rain "helped to increase water levels in our reservoirs slightly", said Mr George Madhavan, director of PUB's 3P Network. Although "some rain has returned", the public should continue to conserve water, he added.
A National Parks Board spokesman said the rain is "a welcomed respite and will help our plants recover".
For owners of local farm businesses such as Eden Garden Farm's Chan Yow Tiong, 63, the rain was a heartening sign, and one that was much welcomed. "My pond was about to dry up," said Mr Chan, who waters the vegetables in his farm with pondwater.
Other farmers including Mr Soh Chau Hian, 68, pointed out that yesterday's rain alone would not be enough to offset the parching effects of the dry spell. "The soil is still very dry," he said.

DURING durian season, employees at local book distributor Penguin Books Singapore look forward to satiating their appetites and having a good time together after work at durian parties.
"Many people love eating durians, some with great passion, so it's something a lot of us here have in common," said Ms Loi Zhi Wei, 36, senior manager of product and marketing.
She told My Paper that the company has already organised several durian parties, with a recent one held on July 29.

Last Saturday, the Singapore Kindness Movement lent its support to this year's Operation: Durian Mobilisation, an annual durian-degustation event organised by food blogger Leslie Tay.
Dr William Wan, general secretary of the Singapore Kindness Movement, said he hoped to use the fruit as a binding factor to "create conversation" among people, even strangers.
The paid event, which took place at the Telok Ayer Community Centre and Hong Lim Park, offered a wide selection of durians - including Mao Shan Wang and D24 - to some 300 participants. Profits from the event will go towards organising a similar charity durian gathering for the Prison Fellowship Singapore, which supports prison inmates and their families.

For research associate Samantha Ong, 24, durian eating is a pastime that she and her close-knit group of friends indulge in to satisfy their "cravings".
On such occasions, they simply talk, laugh and have a good time, she said.

For example, the Thomson Hills Neighbourhood Committee held a durian party on July 27, where over 500 residents turned up for the feast. When the event was first started in 2009, only 150 residents participated.

Besides allowing residents to bond, the event also helped to raise awareness about estate issues such as dengue and crime prevention.
"When residents participate in (these durian parties), they feel more vested in the place they live in," said a neighbourhood-committee spokesman.

Durian (Durio zibethinus) is a fruit native to Southeast Asia, which is cultivated and grows wild in the forests of Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines. Durian is one of the largest fruit, which can weigh up to 1-4 kg with a diameter of 15-30 cm. Each fruit durian typically have 5 kompatemen. Golden yellow flesh, with seeds the size varies, depending on the species. Durian trees to bear fruit after 4-5 years old and can grow to a height of 50 meters. 1. The content of durian which is mainly to watch is the calorie. Every 100 grams of durian has about 120-180 calories calories. The durian fruit with meat weighing 500 grams contains 600-900 calories. If you eat four durian fruits, then your body will get a burst of instant energy for 2400 - 3600 calories, far exceeding the average daily requirement. Therefore, if you are overweight or obese, have high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes, eat with caution.
2. The content of sulfur (sulphur) on the durian is also known to inhibit the metabolism of alcohol. Eating durian with alcohol is very dangerous, could even lead to death. According to the study, durian extract inhibit the activity of aldehyde dehydrogenase, an enzyme that cleans toxic product fractions, up to 70 percent.
3. The content of alcohol in durian can cause fetal growth disorders. One result is that many found that low birth weight.
4. Acid Content arachidonat is a compound that is a precursor to the formation of prostaglandins trigger alias. Prostaglandin itself is a compound that can stimulate uterine contractions resulting in miscarriage (the first trimester) or premature birth (at under 36 weeks gestation).
5. Durian fruit can produce gas in the human stomach. So for those of you who have a history of stomach ulcers .. saranin, do not eat a lot because you can have ulcer relapse ...
