LV’s swamp ambition

PHOTO: Angelina Jolie stars in Louis Vuitton's new campaign.
Today Thursday, June 16, 2011, Page 6, Entertainment

What is the luxury label saying by featuring Angelina Jolie in a Cambodian swamp?
THE new Louis Vuitton campaign is odd. The bag company has always sent expensive photographers to beautiful places to shoot gorgeous vistas. This time round it's Angelina Jolie sans makeup in a wooden boat in a swamp.

"People are not used to seeing Angelina in this situation," vice-president Pietro Beccari told Women's Wear Daily. Which is sort of true.

The ad was shot by photographer Annie Leibovitz in Cambodia and we're all pretty used to seeing Angelina in that neck of the woods. There was Tomb Raider 1 and 2, obviously, then founding an animal sanctuary and picking up Rath Vibol from an orphanage in Battambang to become the boy we all know as Maddox Chivan. I think Beccari meant that we haven't seen her without make-up.

The response has not been one of unguarded rejoicing. Some have argued that if you travel upriver in a very poor country with mosquitos and ferocious river beasts threatening your life and sanity, you might not want to take a £7,000 (S$14,000) bag with you. Perhaps using poor countries as the backdrop to show off your luxury goods isn't in the best possible taste?

All the same, it's hard to be mean to Jolie. She did give a tidy chunk of the pay cheque - reported to be US$10 million (S$12.3 million) - to charity. And all the caring celebrities are doing Vuitton's Core Values campaign these days.

Why? As the Wall Street Journal explained when reporting how poor old Louis Vuitton had two ads banned by the UK's Advertising Standards Authority for implying they were handmade when they weren't, luxury brands' emphasis on worthiness, authenticity and history is an advertising trend that has emerged in the post-economic-crisis period.

Experts say there is evidence that consumers favour labels with a rich heritage because they are seen as more enduring. Hence Gucci's ongoing Forever Now campaign using black-and-white photographs taken in its Florence workshop in 1953 by Foto Locchi.

Heritage is moot. After all, Vuitton financed Petain's Vichy government in the World War II, with Henry Vuitton one of the first Frenchmen to be decorated by the Nazi-backed regime for his loyalty and efforts for them.

To be fair, Vuitton has no truck with fascist sympathisers these days. The company supports a huge list of charities - all fashion brands do, explains Colin McDowell, who is curating Masters Of Style, Peroni's exhibition of Italian fashion advertising at Somerset House in London.

"It's all part of the illusion that we're doing someone somewhere some good when we pay £7,000 for a bag."

HERE'S what makes me want to gouge my eyeballs out with a rusty spoon: A celebrity in a size four Lycra frock who has twice been voted the most perfect, beautiful, va-va-voom woman in the world giving an interview in which she speaks of her body woes.

"I'm just like everyone else really," she trills. "I have my down days. I mean, I can't stand my earlobes, and my left kneecap has a scar on it from the time I climbed Everest for charity, but I try and tell myself that even those scars, those flaws, can be beautiful ... "

No glossy magazine interview is complete without a starlet complaining about her body issues.

Jennifer Aniston recently said her bottom was too big, and Cheryl Cole once said that her bottom was too small. Uma Thurman can't stand her big feet. Angelina Jolie has moaned that she feels her lips "take over my face".

Do these women think it's endearing? If they put themselves in our size 14 jeans, they would see that it just makes us want to smack them in their perfect faces.

The capacity for women to loathe the bodies they have astounds me. A survey by American Glamour magazine found that 97 per cent of readers had negative thoughts about their body every day. I wasn't surprised. This is a bit like the Economist revealing that the majority of its readers are interested in current affairs.

At a dinner party last month, a female guest started asking all the other women which part of their body they disliked the most. I was about to say, "my tummy" when I realised that it was nobody's business and that, furthermore, I didn't actually hate my tummy; I had just been conditioned to think that I did. So I said as much.

My fellow guests looked at me is if I were a deluded egomaniac.

On the way home, my companion turned to me and said sarcastically that it was lovely to have been able to turn up with "Kate bloody Winslet" as a date. How strange, I thought, that having a tiny sense of self-worth marks you out nowadays as some sort of Hollywood diva.

So I laughed when I read an interview with the real Kate Winslet this week. In it, she broke the ultimate taboo.

"I don't have parts of my body that I hate," she admitted, causing the world to wobble on its axis and several websites to collapse under the weight of people commenting that she was full of herself.

But I wanted to kiss her. How wonderful it would be if more women felt they didn't have to do themselves down in order to get ahead.

COINCIDENTALLY, there are two movies playing right now which show a woman filling a man's role.

Pope Joan is about a German woman named Johanna (Johanna Wokalek) who, according to some researchers, supposedly reigned as Pope for a few years during the Middle Ages.

Salt, on the other hand, is a hit action-thriller about Angelina Jolie openly taking over a role reportedly meant for Tom Cruise.

As a hotshot Russian agent named Evelyn Salt, Jolie kicks a** in exactly the same way in which Cruise's latest action dud, Knight And Day, kicked sand.

http://topnews.in/files/Angelina-Jolie_5.jpg

Cruise apparently turned down the role of Edwin Salt because it seemed too close to Ethan Hunt, his exalted Mission: Impossible character.

Oops, it's looking like the Bad Move Of The Year, dude.

Somebody posed this question on the Internet - Who's manlier: Jolie or Cruise?

The answer was Jolie because Cruise, it was claimed, did not turn Brad Pitt into the lady of the house.

Thing is, there are some women of late who are taking over men's roles onscreen. Call it a movement that makes guys partially extinct or wholly irrelevant.

On TV, Battlestar Galactica's pilot prince Starbuck became a chick (Katee Sackhoff), while co-star Grace Park will be a hot babe replacing a burly fella in the upcoming reboot of Hawaii Five-O.

Park has already stepped into a dude's duds for Battlestar. She played Sharon "Boomer" Valerii in Sci Fi's remake. Boomer was portrayed by Herbert Jefferson Jr in the 1978 series.

Park's role in Five-O will be as Kono Kalakaua - originally played by actor Zulu in the 1968 original.

You could say that Sigourney Weaver may be the Renaissance Woman who started this "trend". She apparently took over not one, but three, made-for-men roles. First, she starred as the beastie-basher in the Alien series, then as a network head in 2006's The TV Set and, finally, as a TV producer in 2008's Vantage Point.

PHOTO: Sigourney Weaver
http://images.hitfix.com/photos/201756/SigourneyWeaverPt_gallery_primary.jpg

I cannot confirm, though, whether the sports bra she wore or the masculine stares she gave landed her the part in Avatar. But I do know that Weaver was picked over a man because the film-makers needed a strong female presence.

Plus, back in the days before Jolie, Kristanna Loken as a killer machine in Terminator 3 (2003) and Jodie Foster in Flightplan (2005), a gal with gonads was a hot new draw.

Foster, as a desperate mum looking for her missing daughter in a plane, made Flightplan so riveting you wonder how the role was ever written for Sean Penn in the first place (she even retained the man's name, Kyle, for her character).

Times have changed. The glass ceiling, especially in action flicks, has not just been shattered. It has been replaced, reassembled and re-decorated with hotter, tougher and scarier bada**es.

I don't know about you but Jolie coming at me with a gun and tattoos is infinitely more frightening than Tom Cruise with a grin and a Tatler mag.

The assertion of women in movies is not just tolerated but celebrated now. A producer of Salt said this about the sex swop: "We didn't simply question whether a woman would make all the same choices, but also how the other characters would act or react differently, given that it's a woman."

Like a stripper in a nunnery, it changes the dynamics and makes things more interesting. Look, we are not likely to witness The Godfather being recast yet. But give it time, dudettes. We could be seeing The Godmother.

And she would be hot.
