SINGAPORE - A 25-year-old Taiwanese woman who was working in Singapore donated her organs after dying of a brain-related disease on Sunday (April 23).

Ms Audrey Luan Yi Shiuan, who came to Singapore in July 2016 after graduating from Taiwan's National Taipei University of Technology, was a Chinese teacher in a private tuition centre here, according to a report in Lianhe Wanbao on Thursday (April 27).

Taiwanese media reported that Ms Luan had returned to Taiwan to visit her relatives on April 10, followed by a trip to South Korea. After returning to Singapore last Thursday (April 20), she started to feel unwell.

She later fainted and was taken to hospital, where she fought for her life in the Intensive Care Unit.

It is unclear what disease she suffered from but it is believed to be brain-related.

When doctors declared the 25-year-old brain dead at 11.45am on Sunday (April 23), her family made the difficult decision to take her off life support and donate her organs.

In a Facebook post on Ms Luan's page, her family wrote that although her death was heartbreaking for them, if she could help others to be healthy and happy through the donation of her organs, then it was as if she lived on in spirit.

According to the liveon.sg website by the Ministry of Health, up to seven lives can be saved by one organ donor.

Ms Luan's untimely death moved Selina Jen from Taiwanese girl group S.H.E. to pay tribute to the loyal fan on Facebook on Monday (April 24).

In her post, the 35-year-old singer wrote in Chinese: "My dear, fly bravely! I promise you, I will become a better version of myself! Don't forget our date in a better world."

A friend of Ms Luan's responded to the post, thanking Jen.

"I was Yi Shiuan's roommate," she wrote. "Nearly every night we would hum your songs to sleep. She spoke about you all the time."

Saint Helena
PHOTO: Helena, or Saint Helena (Greek: Ἁγία Ἑλένη, Hagía Helénē, Latin: Flavia Iulia Helena Augusta; c. 250 – c. 330), was a Greek native from the Greek city of Drepana (Δρέπανα) in the province of Bithynia in Asia Minor. She became the consort of the future Roman Emperor Constantius Chlorus (reigned 293–306) and the mother of the future Emperor Constantine the Great (reigned 306–337). She ranks as an important figure in the history of Christianity and of the world due to her major influence on her son. In her final years, she made a religious tour of Syria Palaestina and Jerusalem, during which she allegedly discovered the True Cross. Pious beliefs also associate her to the foundation of the Vatican Gardens.
Several relics purportedly discovered by Saint Helena are now in Cyprus, where she spent some time. Among them are items believed to be part of Jesus Christ's tunic, pieces of the holy cross, and pieces of the rope with which Jesus was tied on the Cross. The rope, considered to be the only relic of its kind, has been held at the Stavrovouni Monastery, which was also founded by Saint Helena.

CLR CFF is a Slovakian-made bottled clear coffee that took almost three years before it became a reality.

The people behind it tried to raise funds for it via Indiegogo in 2015, but got an underwhelming response. Still, they kept at it until the product came into fruition.

Top of the list why CLR CFF is great is how you can get your caffeine fix without staining your teeth. A regular coffee drinker knows the perils of your teeth turning yellow because of the drink. And hey, if there is such a thing as Unicorn Frappucino (that even Katy Perry tried for herself), then clear coffee is not the craziest thing you have heard just yet.

Our mothers always try to cut down on our caffeine intake and dupe us into drinking hot milk.

But thanks to two genius brothers, Adam and David Nagy, you can now evade your mom's eagle eyes and enjoy this elixir of life to your heart's content. They have come up with the ultimate solution to all our beverage problems and that is colourless coffee – CLR CFF.

CLR CFF claims that the brew is made with no sugar, sweeteners, stabilisers, and preservatives.

The main drawbrack is its caffeine content. It has only the same caffeine as a regular bottle of Coca-Cola. The company insists that it is made from premium brewed Arabica beans. How they make it appear clear as water, however, is a well-kept secret.

This colourless concoction, CLR CFF, is said to be free of preservatives, artificial flavours, sweeteners, or stabilizers. How they managed to remove the colour from coffee is still a mystery.

You can order CLR CFF by batches of two or five, starting at £2.99 (That's around S$5.35). If you are abroad, you can get it at Whole Foods and Selfridges & Co. Why would you get it? Oh, as a novelty gift, to try it out because life is short, or just simply for the 'gram. You decide.

They start off by dipping a sensor into a glass of real lemonade. The PH value is then remotely transmitted to electrode strips running along the top of a glass of water - which emulates the taste.

Virtual Lemonade: Let's Teleport Your Lemonade!

The team measured the colour and the acidity level of an actual lemonade using an RGB colour sensor and a PH level sensor.
This data is then transmitted over the internet to a tumbler outfitted with an electrode. This electrode, which is placed on the rim of the tumbler, sends out electrical signals to the drinkers taste buds, simulating the sour taste of a lemonade.
On top of that, LED lights placed inside the tumbler changes its colour to that of the lemonade.

The scientists working on the project said the flavour can then be transmitted through the internet to a friend. The team also claimed there are health benefits to their prototype. The centre is a joint collaboration between National University of Singapore (NUS) and Keio University, Japan.

Two students from the university were given a taste test in front of a reporter. They said they liked the idea, but one student did suggest minor improvements.

What can I do to help someone who may have depression

Depression is a type of mental illness that requires not only professional help but also support from loved ones.

It can be distressing to see a loved one suffer from the grips of depression.

Don't you sometimes feel they should simply 'snap out of it', or 'not think so much' about the unhappy things that are going on in their lives?

Well, the truth is, as much as they wish to, they are unable to.

Depression is a type of mental illness that requires not only professional help but also support from loved ones.

As a firm believer in God, I know that in due time He will make a way, but right now I barely want to move out of my bed.
PHOTO: As a firm believer in God, I know that in due time He will make a way, but right now I barely want to move out of my bed. Telling me to just put my problems away and hop up like nothing is wrong is not helping me.
If you do not know what to say to someone when they come to you with their issues, be honest with them by letting them know you do not know how to help them. Yes, prayer is a crucial part of the healing process, but releasing your feelings is an important step as well. Encourage them to seek professional help, as well as maintaining their relationship with whatever higher power to ensure their recovery process. [2]

Here are some steps you can take to help them:

1. Do not normalise or trivialise their symptoms
Individuals suffering from depression require a lot of support and encouragement from their loved ones. Reach out to them as social isolation can worsen depression.

Do not normalise or trivialise their symptoms
PHOTO: Do not normalise or trivialise their symptoms
You may look at what I am dealing with as something minor, but the way that my brain operates tells me otherwise. I can not shut my mind off every little thing I do is accompanied by something negative and positive.

Every decision I make I feel as though it will be the last one and that makes me anxious. Instead of saying its not that serious tell them that you need a better understanding of why they are feeling the way they are about a certain situation. Get them to be vocal about what they are going through; that allows them to express what they are thinking so that their thoughts are not jumbled up in their heads. [2]

2. Listen to them with empathy
It is important to find out their concerns and provide adequate support. Avoid any active problem solving for them even though you're tempted to - sometimes, they just need a listening ear that doesn't judge.

3. Encourage them to eat healthily
Individuals suffering from depression may find it difficult to even get out of bed every morning. Encourage them to be more actively involved in physical activities as exercise can boost the levels of 'feel-good' hormones (e.g. neurotransmitters and endorphins) and lift their mood!

Establish a daily routine and engage them in activities throughout the day. It can improve bad sleeping habits which can worsen insomnia at night. Furthermore, channeling their attention to other activities can help them find a new purpose in life.

4. Keep a close watch on their safety
Depression can sometimes be so devastating to an individual that they find life not worth living. In some situations, they may even contemplate hurting the people closest to them. A new mother suffering from postnatal depression may think it is a better option to die together with her baby.

If you realise someone around you having suicidal and/or homicidal thoughts, it is a psychiatric emergency and you should seek professional help immediately. You can also be more observant of people around you who might be suffering from depression and lend them a listening ear to let them know they are not alone.

However, if efforts have been taken to help your loved one but the feelings of sadness still persist, it is always good to encourage them to seek a professional opinion.
